KF&B Law Academic Scholarship

US Law Academic Scholarship – Accepting Applications from International Students

The members of the American Law Firm, Kinney, Fernandez & Boire (KF&B) have created the US$1000 KF&B LawAcademic Scholarship, which is in its second year, to help one student lessen their financial burden from school.

Here are some details below:

Eligibility:

  • High school seniors who have already been accepted into a college or university.
  • Current college students who haven’t reached their final year.
  • International Law students that have been accepted into a US college or university – including those on an exchange program.

Guidelines:

KF&B wants to hear your answer to the following question in the form of a 500-word essay:

“Who is your greatest role model”?

Submission Deadline:

The deadline for submissions is May 1st, 2020.

Winner Selection:

The KF&B scholarship committee will select a winner once the submission deadline approaches. The winner will be contacted no later than the first week of June 2020. The winner will have 2 weeks to respond to confirm their information or a new winner will be selected. Once a winner’s information has been confirmed KF&B will award $1000 to the student’s financial aid department at their school.

The $1000 scholarship will be awarded to the winner’s school’s financial aid department.

The Business Case for Inclusive Design

Global First Report Launched with partners Microsoft and Adobe

A new report by CfID, with partners Microsoft and Adobe, ‘Designing for Everyone’ is full of information to help you get inclusive design over the line

Dr Manisha Amin, CEO of Centre for Inclusive Design, said,

“Inclusive design is design that considers the full range of human diversity with respect to ability, language, culture, gender, age and other forms of human difference.”

After calls from customers of Centre for Inclusive Design to identify the business benefits, they realised this research had never been done.

Along with partners Adobe and Microsoft, they commissioned PwC to identify how organisations and industries can gain economic benefit from inclusive design.

The outcome is a powerful resource for anyone looking to build a business case for incorporating inclusive design in to their work.

“We knew instinctively economic benefits exist, but the outcomes from the report show an incredible, largely untapped, opportunity.” said Dr Amin.

“Inclusively designed products and services have the potential to reach four times more customers than those that are not designed inclusively.”

Jeremy Thorpe, Partner and Chief Economist, PwC, said,

“Inclusive design is a no-regrets process that creates significant benefits. It is an overlooked step in maximising the potential of Australian business and ensuring a more productive Australia.”

David Masters, Corporate Affairs Director, Microsoft Australia, said,

“Accessibility is often focused on compliance, and while that is incredibly important, this report clearly shows that inclusion drives economic benefit too. Embedding inclusion in the upfront design phase ensures organisations are delivering products and services for everyone. Inclusive design is driving innovation at Microsoft and is a concept that all organisations should be embracing.”

Suzanne Steele, Managing Director, Adobe Australia and New Zealand, said,

“Through our partnership with the Centre for Inclusive Design and Microsoft, we want to raise awareness of the importance for organisations to include a diverse range of voices and perspectives within their teams in order to reflect the diversity of the Australian population in their products and services.”

The report analyses three key industries in Australia – education, retail and financial services – that can benefit from implementing inclusive design and drive financial, economic and social improvements.

Among these benefits, businesses have the opportunity to increase their revenue by growing their target markets and include Australians vulnerable to exclusion, who possess over $40 billion in annual disposable income.

PACE Mentoring connects students and jobseekers with disability with mentors from leading Australian organisations. You’ll be matched to an experienced professional who will help you identify and reach your career development goals and build your confidence in a workplace environment.

How does it work?

PACE runs across 16 weeks between August and December. You’ll meet with you mentor once a fortnight during that time. Meetings last around one to two hours and are planned to suit you and your mentor’s schedules.

Mentees can discuss their career goals and aspirations, and get help to develop a plan for their personal and professional development. Meetings with mentors may include:

  • Reviewing resumes and cover letters
  • Mock interviews
  • Networking with other professionals
  • Building confidence
  • Attending events and team meetings

After you apply, AND matches you with a mentor based on the information provided in your application. Consideration for matching includes your preferred industry, the skills you want to develop, the goals you set, and your location.

Have You Shared Information about Your Disability with an Education Provider or Employer?

Ali Parker, from National Disability Coordination Officer (NDCO) team, wants to help people build skills and confidence to share information about disability with potential education providers and employers. This includes information about adjustments or supports that may be needed.

How can you help?

The NDCO needs as many people as possible who have a lived experience of disability to complete a survey.

Peter Gibilisco’s aim in this book is to affirm vital principles that must be better understood and implemented if the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is going to be of benefit and fulfil its mandate; so that care doesn’t become careless.

He wants to encourage people to keep on pushing the case for disability justice! His book is aimed at those providing a service to people with disabilities with high support needs.

Internship Applications Closing on 7th APRIL 2019

The Australian Network on Disability runs the Stepping into Program twice a year. Stepping Into is a paid internship program designed specifically for university students with disability to assist them to gain meaningful work experience in the area of their study, to assist them to transition into employment once they complete their degree.

Students learn about the recruitment process, job interviews and if successful, gain exposure to degree-relevant work in a forward-thinking organisation

Internships generally last four to eight weeks (with the opportunity for flexible work hours to manage your disability or other commitments).The AND programs team are available throughout the entire process for support, advice and guidance on how to ensure your internship is a success.

Funding for People with Print Disabilities Conference in Brisbane May 2019

2019 Round Table Conference Funding Support

Round Table on Information Access for People with Print Disabilities Inc  (Round Table) has been successful in obtaining a grant from the Commonwealth Department of Social Services’s National Disability Conference Initiative 2018-19 grant, administered under the Disability, Mental Health and Carers Programme. The purpose of the grant is to help offset the financial cost to self-funded individuals with a print disability wishing to attend Round Table’s annual conference, which is to be held in Brisbane from 4-7 May 2019.

All applicants seeking a portion of the funding support made available by this grant must

  • be an Australian resident.
  • complete and lodge an application on or before Friday, 22 February 2019.

Management Process

  • Applicants must complete an applicationThis can be done either by completing and submitting the on-line application form or by contacting the Round Table Administration Officer.
  • Within twenty-one days of the close of applications applicants will be notified in writing of the success or otherwise of their application, the amount of funding allocated to them, and the process to be followed when making a reimbursement claim.
  • Successful applicants must, within fourteen days of receiving this advice, advise the Round Table’s Administration Officer (in writing) that they wish to accept the funding offer. Failure to notify their intention within this time-frame will mean that the offer lapses and the funding support can then be reallocated by Round Table’s Executive Committee.
  • Claims for reimbursement. Receipts pertaining to travel, accommodation and registration fees, for which the applicant is seeking reimbursement, must be in the applicant’s name (not a third party), and must be lodged with the Round Table’s Administration Officer within two working weeks of the close of Conference. Failure to do so will render them ineligible for reimbursement.

Please Note:

  • Late applications may not be able to be considered.
  • All decisions are made by the Round Table Executive Committee and are final.
  • Funding is limited and some applicants may therefore not be successful with their request for support.
  • Priority may be given to first time attendees, as well as those who are listed as a “presenter” in the Conference Program.
  • Each successful applicant will be allocated a predetermined amount of funding reimbursement which will be a contribution only toward the cost of conference travel, accommodation and registration fees.
  • Conference registrants are responsible for payment of their own costs and can only claim reimbursement from Round Table upon presentation of their receipts which must show that costs have been paid in full.
  • All reimbursements will be made according to the instructions given on the application form and within 30 days of the claim being lodged.

 Applicants are requested to complete and lodge an application before 22 February 2019.

I CAN Network Turns 5

The I CAN Network is now officially five-years-old

An Update from Monash Alumni Chris Varney, Founder and Chief Enabler, I CAN Network

It is incredibly humbling to see how our network has grown from the story of one determined Mum (my Mum, Lisa) and a trio of three Autistic graduates: myself, Penny Robinson and James Ong.

In our five years of operation we have employed 34 Autistics to deliver 113 mentoring programs to 1,608 Autistics aged 8-50+ so that they can feel proud of their Autism, a sense of belonging and are confident and optimistic about their future.

The vision of I CAN Network is a world that benefits from embracing Autism.

We have four strategic goals:

  • To grow a sustainable social enterprise with a 50% Autistic team
  • To ignite a movement to drive a nation-wide rethink of Autism
  • To build a national mentoring program by and for Autistics
  • To partner with organisations who are ready to leverage the strengths of Autism

In our immediate future, we will be implementing the below strategic initiatives:

  1. Creation of a formalised mentor traineeship program
  2. Phased expansion of our online mentoring programs
  3. Phased expansion of our individual mentoring pilot
  4. Pilot of an I CAN Schools subscription, to complement our existing school program
  5. Creation of an award for school staff who embrace Autistic students: ‘Horvath Wake Medal’
