Career Access – would you like to learn some research skills?

A University of Melbourne research team is recruiting six Community Researchers (CRs) to work with them on a project exploring people’s experiences so far of the NDIS in the Barwon trial site. CRs will be provided with training in research skills, including conducting interviews, ethics, and data analysis. This training will take place at the main campus of the University of Melbourne. CRs will be assisted to travel to the Barwon region to conduct interviews with research participants. The positions are casual and CRs will be paid at the Research Assistant Grade 1 rate ($39.49 per hour) for time spent interviewing and time involved in training. In addition to training (12 hours), the position offers approximately six to eight days of paid work (40-60 hours) for each CR. The project is based in the Melbourne School of Government at the University of Melbourne and commences in May 2016.

Stepping Into is a paid internship program designed specifically for university students with disability, who want to gain paid hands-on work experience in their chosen field of study.

The Australian Network on Disability (AND), work with employers to identify and provide opportunities for university students with disability to “step into” the workplace. Stepping Into is an opportunity to gain exposure to various industries, and work alongside experienced professionals to further your skills and experience.

This winter, there are opportunities all around Australia for students with a thirst for learning, and the willingness to give it a go. There are current opportunities available with various companies and locations – view the list of companies here.

Divine – A website for people with a disability

Divine is a website for people with a disability. It is published by the Victorian Government’s Department of Health and Human Services.

A team of writers, all of whom have a disability, have written for the website since its launch just over seven years ago. They have written on a wide range of topics, often sharing their own experiences, interests and passions.

The Divine team wants to redevelop the website with a new brand, new content and an improved user experience.

The team wants to know what you think of its plans for Divine. By completing the survey you can help them understand what kind of content you expect or want on a website for people with a disability.

What is PACE Mentoring?

PACE is the Australian Network on Disability’s (AND) dynamic mentoring program offering students and jobseekers with disability the opportunity to develop skills and confidence in a workplace setting.

Mentoring activities include:

  • Reviewing resume and cover letters
  • Mock interviews
  • Worksite visits
  • Networking skills, and
  • Building confidence

DSS Graduate Program

The Department of Social Services’ (DSS) Graduate Programme provides you with diverse career opportunities across the Department and gives you the chance to make a difference to the lives of some of the more vulnerable people in our society. The ten-month programme offers graduates training and networking opportunities and a permanent position within the Department with a competitive salary, excellent working conditions and broad opportunities for career development.

DSS also participates in the APS RecruitAbility scheme, which aims to better support the employment of people with disability and develop an Australian Public Sector workforce that is representative of the community it serves. Their participation in the APS RecruitAbility scheme extends to our 2017 Graduate Programme. The scheme enables an applicant with disability to opt into the scheme and, if they meet the minimum requirements for the position, progress to a further stage in the recruitment process.

Summer Internship with PwC

The Stepping Into program offers practical paid work experience for successful students with disability who may face significant obstacles in gaining employment.

PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC) is partnering with the Australian Network on Disability to attract successful candidates who want to gain meaningful work experience within a range of disciplines this summer.

PwC are pioneers within their field and are taking a leadership role in providing opportunities to students with disability to access internship opportunities.

The Stepping Into program is a recruitment process and includes application, interview and selection processes. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to complete a paid work experience program with PwC. You will also be required to participate in a student briefing as part of the selection process.

PwC are offering paid internships at their offices in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth and the program will take place in summer 2016/17.  Students studying in all disciplines can apply, but must be in their penultimate or final year of their degree, and show a genuine passion and suitability to work at PwC. PwC’s summer internship program typically runs between December and February.

Opportunity | photo shoot for people with disability

The Department of Social Services (DSS) is currently developing the JobAccess Gateway as a central entry point into disability employment. This new Gateway will build on the existing JobAccess Service and seeks to streamline access to information and provide tailored advice on disability employment.

The DSS is seeking expressions of interest from people with disability who would like to participate in a photo shoot to capture images and videos that illustrate how people with disability bring a range of skills, talents and abilities into the workplace. Your image will only be used through the JobAccess Gateway and its associated resources including the website, fact sheets, posters, flyers and banners.

To register interest:

  1. Complete the participation pack attached below; including the DSS Consent Form and the Participants Details Form. Please ensure to advise of any accessibility requirements you may need.

Stepping Into 2016: Applications are Open!

It is with great anticipation that we invite you to participate in our upcoming winter internship program. Stepping Into™ is a paid internship program designed specifically for university students with disability.

Students benefit significantly through gaining experience of the job application and interview process, developing a network of contacts within a professional organisation, and gaining valuable paid work experience which they can include on their resumes, and having the opportunity to showcase their skills and knowledge.

Internships are for a minimum 152 hours duration (unless otherwise specified). These hours can be completed either full time (four weeks) or part-time (varies) as negotiated with the employer. Smile for Mental Health

As part of the newly launched Mental Health Champions student leadership initiative, the group have developed their first on-campus event of the year – Smile for Mental Health.

Taking place during Summerfest, on Tuesday 22nd of March from 7:30 to 9pm at the Central 1 Lecture Theatre, Clayton Campus, the event will provide a scorching selection of stand-up comedy with a unique twist from some of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s finest acts.

Our headline performers will be the much loved Sammy J (with his good friend Randy), and Damien Power as MC, with support from award winning comedians Laura Davis, David Rose, Jonathan Schuster and Naomi Higgins, this is an evening spectacle that is simply not to be missed. Curated by Monash University’s Mental Health Champions, the purpose of this event is to have a meaningful conversation about mental health, and have a smile doing so.
