Disability Disclosure & Reasonable Adjustment Workshop

On Thursday 23 March 2023 GradWISE will be partnering with Career Connect to invite students living with a disability to a Disability Disclosure & Reasonable Adjustment workshop.

GradWISE is a graduate program, developed by WISE Employment in conjunction with Australian Universities.

The program is designed to empower graduates and tertiary students living with a disability, mental, physical health condition or injury to aspire, develop and thrive in graduate jobs and entry level employment.

GradWISE would like to invite you to a Disability Disclosure & Reasonable Adjustment workshop, designed to provide you with valuable information and resources related to living with a disability in the world of work.

The workshop aims to create a safe space for students living with a disability to discuss their experiences, concerns and questions with GradWISE Career Coaches who can provide support and guidance.

The workshop will focus on the following topics:

• Understanding disability disclosure: the benefits, risks, and legal rights involved
• Reasonable adjustments: what they are and how to request them
• Accessible resources and accommodations available in organisations
• Best practices for self-advocacy and support networks

In this workshop, we encourage you to come with an open mind and be willing to participate in discussions.

What is Stepping Into Internship program?

About the Stepping Into Internship Program

Internships will run between 4 and 8 weeks and comprise of 152 hours in total (with the opportunity for flexible work hours to manage your disability or other commitments).

Are You Eligible?

• Stage of study: final or second last year university students (undergraduate or postgraduate degrees) and graduates up to 36 months
• Discipline of study: All are encouraged to apply
• Citizenship status: Australian citizen, Permanent Resident or international student with full working rights in Australia
• Location: Open to students located in metro and regional areas across Australia
• We welcome previous Stepping Into applicants to re-apply for the program!

AND accepts applications from students with all types of disability including, but not limited to: physical disability, mental health conditions, sensory impairments and immunological conditions. Find out more about disability types here.

The Australian Disability and Indigenous Peoples’ Education Fund Scholarship is Now Open

The Australian Disability and Indigenous Peoples’ Education Fund is now open for applications with the deadline for this round being March 31, 2023.

Closing dates are every six months at the end of March and September annually.

Established by Frank Hall-Bentick AM (and his sisters Lesley and Annette and a group of friends Rae, Lyndall, Cath, Ros and Jody) in 2008, the Australian Disability and Indigenous Peoples’ Education Fund (ADIPEF) was created following Frank’s involvement in disability advocacy over thirty years.

Assisting Indigenous and Non-Indigenous People with Disability

Assisting indigenous and non-indigenous people with disability to participate in both formal and informal education programs through small grants, the fund empowers people with disability through further education and learning (both formal and informal).

Based on the belief that education’s important should not be measured by graduate degrees, diplomas or salaries, but by achievements, contributions, paths taken and careers followed – including cultural, relationship, historical and tolerance learnings.

This education fund assists in this through providing small, six monthly grants of up to $2,500 to assist people with disabilities to continue their learning.

• People with disabilities of any age living in Australia may apply for any assistance to help with both formal and informal education.

Rossjohn Lab Has 2 Roles Available – Apply Now!

*If you are a DSS-registered final year student or recent graduate, this may be the golden opportunity you’ve been looking for! 

• The celebrated, multi-award-winning Rossjohn Lab has 2 part-time internship roles available (offered over 13 weeks): Administrative assistant (office) and Technical officer (lab work).

Here is a brief outline of the roles:

The internship program will equip graduate students with valuable skills and experience in either laboratory research work or office administration in a scientific setting.

• Laboratory work may include assisting with the operation and maintenance of technical equipment and services, the preparation of solutions and experimental design, and other laboratory tasks. See lab website here.
• Administrative duties may include clerical and bookkeeping tasks and other office duties pertaining to the running of the office and laboratory including assisting in the preparation and management of documentations and coordinating the routine back-up of laboratory research and administration data.

Tasks may also extend to creating tactile artworks with our Artist in residence for our Monash Sensory Science exhibition.

This opportunity is anticipated to provide graduate students who have a disability with work experience and skills that will increase their post university employment prospects.

• Candidates who are recent graduates in a science related discipline or in office administration, and have a strong motivation to work in this field are encouraged to apply.

Join this session on 28 March 2023 (3 – 4:30pm) to learn about the successful GradWISE program for students/graduates living with a disability and gain insights from Monash University Alumni’s experience with their transition from Academia to a successful career.

You will also hear from The Australian Network on Disability (AND), which will provide information on the PACE mentoring program and the Stepping into internship program.

Are you a Deaf, Deafblind or hard of hearing student who uses Auslan and needs academic support?

Dr Gabrielle Hodge is a Deaf researcher and writer based in Naarm / Melbourne. She is a trained linguist with fifteen years experience researching and teaching in Australia and the United Kingdom.

Gabrielle specialises in research relating to deaf people, sign languages and communication.

Gabrielle’s aim is to research, teach, and build capacity with other deaf people.

As part of this, Gabrielle offers tailored academic and career mentorship services to Deaf, Deafblind and hard of hearing students who are studying at Universities and other higher education institutions. This typically includes peer-to-peer scholarly discussion in Auslan, written academic English skills development, and general academic and career guidance.

*Benefits include scholarly discussion and mentorship with a Deaf peer and in your own language Auslan.

You will also learn how to navigate academic, research, and professional environments that are generally hostile for Deaf, Deafblind and hard of hearing signing people.

2022 Review of the Transport Standards – public consultation now open

Public consultation for the 2022 Review of the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002 (Transport Standards) is open to 30 June 2023.

• The discussion paper can be viewed at infrastructure.gov.au/transport-standards-review.

The discussion paper is available now to maximise the time for public consultation, however please note that there will be a broader communications campaign to promote the Review in early-January to support engagement.

• This will include further information about public consultation events and additional consultation resources such as translations.

The 2022 Review is part of a statutory requirement to review the efficiency and effectiveness of the Transport Standards every 5 years and is separate to the consultations held earlier this year on potential ways to modernise the Transport Standards.

The Review must:

• report on the effectiveness and efficiency of the Transport Standards
• report on whether discrimination has been removed as far as possible
• include any necessary amendments to the Transport Standards.
