Willing and Able Mentoring Program (WAM)

The WAM program, offered through Diversity Recruitment and Training, matches students registered with disability (mentees) with people currently working in their discipline or a related field (mentors).

If matched with a mentor, you will be expected to participate in 6-8 face-to-face meetings over 2-3 months, typically held at or near the mentor’s workplace, designed to provide information about:

  • the industry, professional life and career development
  • work role expectations
  • how organisations advertise positions
  • job search skills (for example, developing your resume, interview and networking skills)
  • (if applicable), the graduate recruitment process in that organisation or industry
  • when and how to disclose details of a disability

Timelines – Semester 1, 2015

  • 27 January – Mentee applications open
  • 13 March – Expression of interest to Disability Services due
  • 20 March – WAM application due, following approval from Disability Services
  • 23-28 March – Mentor and mentee briefing/training
  • April-June – Mentoring period

Submit your Expression of Interest to participate in this program for semester 1 by Friday 13 March.

PACE Mentoring for Students with Disability – Applications close SOON!

Australian Network on Disability (AND) has a vibrant and dynamic mentoring program, called PACE, which has been developed to offer students with disability the opportunity to develop their skills and confidence in a workplace setting, which can assist them in planning their career journey, as well as aiding their personal and professional development.

PACE recognises that students and job seekers with disability frequently find themselves with little or no work experience, and may not be fully aware of the skills and attributes they can offer an organisation. This can add to the difficulties that students and job seekers may encounter as they try to enter their chosen career. PACE aims to assist mentees to become ‘job-ready’ and reduce some of these hurdles.

How to apply?

The commitment is to meet with a mentor up to eight times during the course of 12 weeks. The autumn program will start just after Easter so applications should be submitted by 13 March, with the chance to be matched with a manager from one of AND’s member organisations, including ANZ and IBM. This can be great preparation for the AND Stepping Into program as well.

ANZ Graduate and Abilities Programs

The ANZ Graduate Program is now open to all students and they would particularly like to promote this opportunity to students with a disability and demonstrate the reasons why disclosure can be an advantage.

They are actively seeking to increase the number of applications from students with disabilities.

The application period has already begun and will finish on 20th March for students in Victoria. Applications can be made on-line at the ANZ Graduate website. I will be contacting every student that discloses that they have disability in their application so that I can help them through the process and hopefully achieve a better outcome.

Time Management Workshop

Monash Counselling Service at Clayton campus is offering a free one-hour workshop on time management, specifically for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. This workshop will provide practical strategies and exercises for managing your time at university and problem  solving when you are stuck.

Time: 11am-12pm

Seminar: Media representation of persons with disabilities

Great FREE event happening on Tuesday night 6pm-7pm, Media Representation of Disability with Professor at the University of Melbourne.

Beth Haller is Professor of Journalism/New Media and the Graduate Director of the Communication Management master’s program in the Department of Mass Communication & Communication Studies at Towson University in Maryland, where she has been a full-time faculty member since 1996. She is the author of Representing Disability in an Ableist World: Essays on Mass Media (Advocado Press, 2010). She is also the former co-editor of the Society for Disability Studies’ scholarly journal, Disability Studies Quarterly, (2003-2006). She is adjunct faculty for the City University of New York’s Disability Studies master’s program and for York University’s Critical Disability Studies graduate program in Toronto.

Haller currently maintains a blog on disability issues in the news, Media dis&dat. She has been researching media images of disability since 1991, when she did a master’s thesis at the University of Maryland-College Park on the coverage of Deaf persons in The Washington Post and New York Times. Her Ph.D. dissertation at Temple University investigated elite news media coverage of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

O Week 2015!

Welcome to the 2015 Monash O -Week!

The sun is out, the festivities are buzzing, the music is pumping and the lines for free food are growing! Make the most of the week by checking out all the various events and activities and events on your Monash campus.

Just a reminder, as well – the Monash Disability Services is running an Open House all this week. That means if you have any questions at all about disabilities or mental health conditions that you feel might impact on your studies, pop into the Disability Services at 21 Ancora Imparo Way (previously Building 55 – right at the bus loop, near the Law Building and Menzies). You can speak to one of our friendly Disability Advisers who will be able to assist you with any inquiries you might have.

Also, starting tomorrow, we will also be running Disability Campus Tours around the Caulfield and Clayton campuses. Tours are open to all registered students and you can register for one of these tours here.

Clayton tours will run from 2pm on the Thursday and Friday of O-Week (26th and 27th February)

Tours will meet outside 21 Ancora Imparo Way (previously Building 55) at 1.50pm for a 2pm start

Caulfield tours will run from 2pm on the Tuesday of O-Week (24th of February)

Tours will meet outside Monash Connect (Building A, ground floor) at 1.50pm for a 2pm start

Campus maps will be provided on the day and it may be advisable to bring your own pen and paper to take notes. Please let us know in advance if you require Auslan interpreters, electric scooters or have any other accessibility requirements.

Arthritis Victoria Youth Workshop

Are you aged 18-24 and living with muscle, bones or joint pain? Do you want to connect with others in a similar situation? Arthritis and Osteoporosis Victoria are hosting a Youth Workshop to find out what you need.

The workshop has been organised with young people and will be run by young people. The event will be very relaxed and informal and will involve some discussion groups to capture your thoughts. These groups are led by young people with musculoskeletal conditions who really get it. The topics for discussion are:

  • What are the important issues you have to deal with?
  • What things do you need and what to know about?
  • How do you want products, services and information delivered? (eg face-to-face, social media, phone apps, text message, website etc)

Important things to know about the workshop

  • Sunday 22nd March at 1pm

I CAN Network’s young adults camp, hosted by I CAN’s tertiary networks, will empower young adults (aged 18 – 30) on the Autism Spectrum to live the ‘I Can’ attitude. It will equip participants with the confidence to be leaders in our growing network. I CAN’s Camps are unique. They are run entirely by young people on the Spectrum for young people on the Spectrum. Here’s some of what you will get up to on camp:

  • Games and random fun
  • Team-building/ outdoor activities, including a bonfire
  • Expressing I CAN’ – an exhibition of the ‘I Can’ attitude made by participants’ writing, drawing, music and construction
  • Mentoring Master Class (an optional workshop for those young people ready and willing to take their mentoring or uni network to the next step)
  • TEDxICAN – a showcase of ideas supporting the #AWEtismRethink
  • AWE Ball (Theme: ‘Dress to Obsess’) – don your favourite obsession on the Saturday evening!
  • ‘I CAN’ Talks – talks delivered by participants on what they’re going to say ‘I Can’ to
