National Science Week – Australia’s Annual Celebration of Science and Technology

Running in August each year, National Science Week features more than 1000 events around Australia, including those delivered by schools, universities, research institutions, libraries, museums and science centres.

For 2019, Dr Kirsten Ellis has received support from the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science to run maker workshops that are accessible to all.

Expressions of Interest Sought from Students with Disability

Workshops will be running on 15 August at Peninsula Campus and 16 August on Clayton campus from 3.30-5.30pm, and organisers would like to try include as many people as possible from the Monash community.

Summer Scholarships in the Rossjohn Lab Now Available

Summer scholarships for 2nd or 3rd year students are available in the Rossjohn lab and they are accepting applications from students registered with DSS.

Applications are due by 26 July 2019

Projects with internships offered:

• Code: 2009  – Defining the key molecular interactions underlying receptor recognition events in immunity
• Code: 2016  – Sensory exhibition and outreach program (administration)

A Call for Students with Autism to Apply for Paid Industry Experience

The CAANZ (Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand) Achiever Program is a vacation work experience program for final and penultimate year students studying Commerce, Accounting or Business related degrees.

It provides an opportunity for students to meet with employers and to have the opportunity to secure a vacation work experience placement.

During the 2018 Achiever Program, 121 employers (nationally) took on 233 students to provide industry experience for 3 – 12 weeks over November to March.

Successful Applicants Will Get The Following:

• Paid industry experience (1 – 12 weeks)
• Develop industry contacts and networks
• Gain insights into specialisations of interest

A large proportion of these successful students then went on to secure a graduate placement with their employer after completing their degree.

The application and selection process follows common industry practice for graduate recruitment programs, including video submission, cognitive testing  and an assessment centre.

Throughout the entire application and selection process, students identifying as being Autistic (including Aspergers) will be supported to assist them to have an equal opportunity for final selection.

Employers will also be educated and supported throughout the placement period to ensure successful students and their employer have a positive experience.

The aim is to identify interested students prior to that to both prepare you for the application process and to enable Chris and his team to start conversations with potential employers.

This is a wonderful opportunity for students with autism in Melbourne to gain real, meaningful work experience and to start building contacts for the future.

Dr. Summit Shah MD Scholarship Open To International University Students

Dr. Summit Shah has founded the Dr. Summit Shah MD Scholarship in reaction to the rising tuition costs.

Dr. Summit Shah graduated as valedictorian from Bishop Watterson High School before attending Ohio State University in the United States, where he earned a Bachelor’s with Honors. He stayed at OSU and earned his MD from the College of Medicine at Ohio State.

He has been a tireless advocate of access to higher education and has founded the Summit Shah Scholarship to ensure that deserving students from all parts of the economic spectrum can reach their academic goals.

Eligibility:

Eligibility parameters are as follows:

• High school students graduating this calendar year and have been accepted into a college, university, trade school, or design school are eligible to apply
• Students currently enrolled in a college, university, trade school, or design school *including university students from other countries, including Australia.
• All majors and areas of studies are encouraged to apply

Essay Question:

Life is hard and it takes motivation to be persistence to reach your goals. To be considered for this scholarship, please submit a short essay (500 words or less) that shares what some of the professional goals that you hope to achieve in the next five years are with Dr. Summit Shah.

Submission Deadline:

July 1, 2020

Winner Selection:

One winner will be selected in early August 2020. The winner will be contacted after selection. If the winner does not respond, a new winner will be selected.

Inclusive Design – A Human-Centred Approach

Inclusive design is a human-centred approach to the design of mainstream products and services that considers the full range of human diversity – ability, language, culture, gender, age and other forms of human difference. It’s about making products and services accessible to, and usable by, as many people as reasonably possible, without the need to create separate, specialised or segregated solutions.

The benefits are proven – research by the Centre for Inclusive Design (CfID) in partnership with Adobe and Microsoft shows that products and services designed with unique needs in mind can reach four times the number of intended consumers and have a positive impact on an organisation’s bottom line.

2019 Vice-Chancellor’s Diversity and Inclusion Awards are Now Open!

The Vice-Chancellor’s Diversity and Inclusion Awards recognise students and staff (individuals or teams) who have made an outstanding contribution to supporting diversity and fostering inclusion at Monash and beyond.

In 2019, there is a total of $15,000 AUD available to be distributed among winners (allocations determined by the selection committee).

The awards are open to staff and students of Monash University (Australia and Malaysia), including:

• academic and professional staff (full-time, part-time, casual and sessional)
• Monash University students (full-time or part-time)
• group projects (teams, committees and work units)

Submit Your Nomination

Nominations can be submitted by Monash University students and staff members, but a person can’t nominate:

• themselves for an individual award
• a group or team of which they are a member.

To make a nomination, please download and complete the nomination form (editable PDF) and submit it online.
