The Australian Network on Disability is partnering with Cummins Inc, a global power leader in the design, manufacture and distribution of diesel and natural gas engines, to provide Business, Commerce, Economics and Finance students with disability the opportunity to be mentored by industry professionals as part of the PACE Mentoring program.

There are a number of positions still available for students who want to improve their industry knowledge and work-based skills, as well as network with seasoned professionals in the finance field. During the program, students will work with their mentors to set career goals, discuss skills and experience, and learn how to best promote their capabilities to future employers. Other activities may include:

• Reviewing resumes and cover letters
• Mock interviews
• Worksite visits
• Networking with other professionals
• Discussing workplace adjustments
• Building confidence.

Students will meet with their mentors 6-8 times over a 12 week period. Meetings can be arranged around work and study commitments, and will generally be of 1-2 hours duration.

PACE offers students with disability the opportunity to develop their skills and confidence in a workplace setting, which can assist them in planning their career journey, as well as aiding their personal and professional development.

PAID INTERNSHIPS WITH PwC IN SYDNEY, MELBOURNE, BRISBANE, ADELAIDE AND PERTH

Stepping Into… is a paid internship program specifically designed for students with a disability, who want paid, hands-on work experience that is relevant to their degree and chosen field of study. We have been successfully assisting students to obtain paid internships since 2005.

Australian Network on Disability (AND) are partnering with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to attract successful candidates who want to gain meaningful work experience within a range of disciplines next summer. PwC are pioneers within their field and are taking a leadership role in providing internship opportunities to students with disabilities.

• Internship opportunities with PwC are available in the following business and services groups:
• Assurance – Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth
• Tax and Legal, Corporate Tax – Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Brisbane
• Consulting – National

To be eligible:

• Be in your penultimate or final year of study;
• Be an Australian citizen or a permanent resident;
• Be registered with Disability Services at your university.

The WAM program, offered through Diversity Recruitment and Training, matches students registered with disability (mentees) with people currently working in their discipline or a related field (mentors).

If matched with a mentor, you will be expected to participate in 6-8 face-to-face meetings over 2-3 months, typically held at or near the mentor’s workplace, designed to provide information about:

• the industry, professional life and career development
• work role expectations
• how organisations advertise positions
• job search skills (for example, developing your resume, interview and networking skills)
• (if applicable), the graduate recruitment process in that organisation or industry
• when and how to disclose details of a disability

Timelines – Semester 1, 2015

• 27 January – Mentee applications open
• 13 March – Expression of interest to Disability Services due
• 20 March – WAM application due, following approval from Disability Services
• 23-28 March – Mentor and mentee briefing/training
• April-June – Mentoring period

Submit your Expression of Interest to participate in this program for semester 1 by Friday 13 March.

PACE recognises that students and job seekers with disability frequently find themselves with little or no work experience, and may not be fully aware of the skills and attributes they can offer an organisation. This can add to the difficulties that students and job seekers may encounter as they try to enter their chosen career. PACE aims to assist mentees to become ‘job-ready’ and reduce some of these hurdles.

How to apply?

The commitment is to meet with a mentor up to eight times during the course of 12 weeks. The autumn program will start just after Easter so applications should be submitted by 13 March, with the chance to be matched with a manager from one of AND’s member organisations, including ANZ and IBM. This can be great preparation for the AND Stepping Into program as well.

The ANZ Graduate Program is now open to all students and they would particularly like to promote this opportunity to students with a disability and demonstrate the reasons why disclosure can be an advantage.

They are actively seeking to increase the number of applications from students with disabilities.

The Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development is looking to recruit talented students from diverse backgrounds for the 2016 Graduate Development Program.

On Monday, 2 March, the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development will open applications for the 2016 Graduate Development Program. From roads to local government funding, airport security to large scale shipping, urban planning to transport logistics, the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development really is shaping Australia’s future. Here is your opportunity to be part of it and choose your own adventure!

With the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development, you can choose your own adventure. As a standard, however, you will:

• Begin your career as an APS 3 – an entry level above that of interns and trainees;
• Complete three rotations across the Department that will keep you engaged in a variety of projects;
• Undertake a graduate certificate in Public Administration;
• Participate in a graduate interstate industry tour to see the work of the Department in action; and
• Be involved in the running of the Department’s Social Club, giving you plenty of networking opportunities.

On top of all that, on successful completion of the Graduate Development Program you will advance two levels to become an ongoing APS 5, a more senior classification. With this head-start, you are well on your way to establishing a successful career.

Along the way, you will be supported within the Department’s structured learning environment. They have specific mentoring initiatives to develop the workforce skills of people with disability. Their Disability Working Group is a supportive network and, if you choose to join it, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the Department’s directions in the disability space – particularly in relation to the Department’s Disability Workforce Action Plan. The Department is also a Silver Member of the Australian Network on Disability.
