SafeTALK Training

Friday, May 3rd, 2013

If someone chose to confide in you about their suicidal thoughts, could you help?

Would you feel prepared to have a conversation?

Do have knowledge of the services available?

No? You’re not the only one- safeTALK training is for you!

SafeTALK is an internationally recognised program to increase suicide alertness, and help you become active in preventing suicide.

Most people with thoughts of suicide invite help, either directly or indirectly. This program helps you identify and work with these opportunities. SafeTALK stresses safety while challenging beliefs that inhibit open talk about suicide.

The training runs for 3.5 hours and you will learn how to:

  • notice and respond to situations where thoughts of suicide may be present
  • provide practical help by using the TALK steps (Tell, Ask, Listen and Keep safe)
  • act quickly to connect the person with someone trained in suicide intervention
  • contribute to building a safer community.

Date: Thursday 19 September

Time: 9:30am – 1:00pm

Campus: Clayton

“Openness of information was good I think having different scenarios was good to show different contexts in dealing with suicidal thoughts including cultural diversity”

GraVVITAS – Accessible Graphics for People with Vision Impairment

Friday, April 12th, 2013

Here we have another exciting event planned for Diversity and Inclusion Week.

Dr Cagatay Goncu and Professor Kim Marriott demonstrate their new device ‘GraVVITAS’, which works on an iPad, and uses vibration and sounds to guide the visually impaired users around a diagram.

It is designed to enable the user to build a picture of the entire graphic in their mind.

Dr Cagatay Goncu and Professor Kim Marriott, along with Associate Professor John Hurst of the Faculty of Information Technology recently received an Honourable Mention in the 2012 Touch of Genius awards, organised by the National Braille Press (NBP) in the US for their submission of the Graphics Viewer using Vibration, Interactive Touch, Audio and Speech (GraVVITAS).

Giants of the Bay 2013

Friday, March 8th, 2013

A message from Kit Wise from the Faculty of Arts, Design and Architecture:

I am organizing a team of Monash swimmers to take part in the Giants of the Bay 2013 ocean swim relay, to raise funds and awareness for Autism.

This time around, the race in Port Philip Bay is the longest open water swim in Australia, and half the 6 person team are/have been staff at MADA, the Faculty of Art Design & Architecture. Last year we came third and raised $17,000 and hope to get near that again.

For information on the event, please visit the Giants of the Bay website.
We are currently seeking donations for this event, and would appreciate your support.

All Rights

Wednesday, March 6th, 2013

The Youth Disability Advocacy Service (YDAS) is in the testing stage of their new rights and laws website – the Disability Rights Hub.

Now they want to know what you think of it.

Before the site goes live, they will be holding one-on-one testing sessions on MONDAY 14TH MARCH (not very long away), so that you can have a tinker with their prototype and help them ensure that all the bits and bobs of the site are all working.

Participants are welcome to bring their own laptop or iPad, or use one provided by the YDAS.

For those interested, please contact ydasadvocate@yacvic.org.au or call them on 9267 3733.
