GradWISE: One-on-One Career Support for Students with Disability

Monash is excited to announce that it is joining forces with GradWISE, a program developed in conjunction with Australian Universities to provide support and improve employment opportunities for students living with a disability, illness or injury.

Through one-on-one, group and online services, GradWISE give you the skills, experience and assistance you need in finding your perfect graduate role and during your employment, for as long as you require.

2019 Vice-Chancellor’s Diversity and Inclusion Awards are Now Open!

The Vice-Chancellor’s Diversity and Inclusion Awards recognise students and staff (individuals or teams) who have made an outstanding contribution to supporting diversity and fostering inclusion at Monash and beyond.

In 2019, there is a total of $15,000 AUD available to be distributed among winners (allocations determined by the selection committee).

The awards are open to staff and students of Monash University (Australia and Malaysia), including:

• academic and professional staff (full-time, part-time, casual and sessional)
• Monash University students (full-time or part-time)
• group projects (teams, committees and work units)

Submit Your Nomination

Nominations can be submitted by Monash University students and staff members, but a person can’t nominate:

• themselves for an individual award
• a group or team of which they are a member.

To make a nomination, please download and complete the nomination form (editable PDF) and submit it online.

Nominations close at 5:00 pm, Monday 5 August 2019.

Ron McCallum Memoir: ‘Born at the Right Time’.

Ron McCallum, AO is Emeritus Professor of Law at the University of Sydney, a former Monash Law student, and the first totally blind person to be appointed to a full professorship at any university in Australia.

Ron has been chair of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Geneva, has received a Centenary Medal for his work, and was the 2011 Senior Australian of the Year. He has recently released his memoir, ‘Born at the Right Time‘.

Graduate Insight Program – Accessibility and Inclusion

Are you in your penultimate (second last) or final year of either an undergraduate or postgraduate degree?

The Graduate Insight Program – Accessibility and Inclusion is aimed at people with a disability, including those who have physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments that may hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others. It provides insight into the Department of Justice and Community Safety’s Graduate Program and the career opportunities and pathways available.

The program will include:

• Overview of the Graduate Program and application process
• Panel discussion with current graduates
• Morning tea with graduates and employees
• Introduction to their Diversity Issues Unit
• Career journey of a staff member with a disability

The Department of Justice and Community Safety are looking for people who want to make a difference. People who take pride in their work and who are committed to making Victoria a safer place.

Children with Autism Excluded from Mainstream Classes

An increasing number of students with autism are being excluded from mainstream classes according to new research which raises concerns about the segregation of children with disabilities.

Monash University research from Kate De Bruin has found that between 2009 and 2015, the inclusion of autistic students in mainstream classes dropped from 18.8 per cent to just 3.3 per cent.

“As an autistic job seeker myself, I can tell you that it’s pretty tough out here. I’ve been searching for 2.5 years now with no success. The job market is a minefield of myths, misconceptions and misunderstandings for autistic people and our unemployment rate is abysmal. A recent study found that here in Australia, 31.6% of autistic people are unemployed — a rate that is 3 times that for people with disabilities in general and is almost 6 times the unemployment rate for people who do not have a disability.”

Travelling Interstate or Overseas can be Very Overwhelming for a Person with Disability

Having a disability and travelling interstate or overseas can be very overwhelming. Airports are busy places bustling with people getting to their next destination or returning home.

Whilst a lot of work is done to help passengers move through airports to access food and retail shops, toilets, lounges and ultimately the right gate for their flight, spare a thought for people experiencing blindness or low vision.
