Applications open for Vision Australia’s graduate program, Career Start.

Hi there

Vision Australia are currently looking for three talented graduates, Australia wide. Do you know anyone who is blind or has low vision and has graduated within the last four years or will have finished their studies by April 2017?

About Career Start
Career Start is designed to provide experience in the workplace to people who are blind or have low vision. Graduates may have previously experienced barriers in entering the workforce. This program enables participants to develop workplace skills, apply their qualification in practice and develop a network of contacts and mentors.

Career Start is a 12 month program consisting of a nine month paid placement within Vision Australia and a three month paid placement with an external employer. Support is provided following the placement to transition into ongoing employment.

How can you help?
Please help us to spread the word to your networks and encourage anyone to apply who may be suitable. Job positions and locations are flexible. After expressions of interest are received we develop the job descriptions that match the skills and expertise of our candidates. We encourage anyone interested to apply for the program or to contact us to discuss their situation. There are print friendly large-print posters and flyers attached, as well as an accessible word document which can be forwarded to your contacts.

Eligibility to participate in the 12 month paid placement
· Graduated within the last four years/ Will have completed study by April 2017
· Obtained a qualification at Diploma level or higher
· Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
· Live within commutable distance to a Vision Australia centre
· Be able to commence the placement in April 2017
· Be able to participate in the program for a minimum of 0.8 EFT (full-time preferred)
· Have a current eye report (with the last 12 months)

Want to share your story and inspire young people to study at university? Become an Access Monash Mentor for 2017!
As a Mentor you will:
· Help students from under-represented schools decide on their pathway

· Run events, campus tours and mentoring sessions

· Join a network of other high-achieving Monash students

· Take part in exciting leadership and networking opportunities

· Get a Community Leaders Scholarship – $4000 per year!

We’re looking for students who have a 65% + average, can commit at least two hours per week and who have an understanding or personal experience of the barriers that can prevent students from coming to university (e.g. attending an under-represented school, financial disadvantage, first in family to attend university, non English speaking background, living in a rural area).

Teaching Inclusively for Disability – 1 hour workshop

DSS  is proud to present a one-hour workshop ‘Teaching Inclusively for Disability’ as part of Diversity and Inclusion Week 2016.

This workshop will address these key questions:

What kind of supports should we offer students with disability, mental health or medical conditions?

What are ‘reasonable adjustments’, and what are good practice examples and guidelines?

What can we learn from the research into the effectiveness of individualised adjustments and institutionalised learning supports?

How do we define Inclusive Teaching, and what are some practical strategies?

What are some of the challenges for Academic staff in the diverse learning environment, and how can we address these?

What can we learn from the feedback and comments within the CEED Module Teaching Inclusively for Disability – including examples of good practice by academic staff?

Presenters:

Professor Ellie Fossey is Head of Department in Occupational Therapy, Monash University. Her previous research has predominantly focused on participation and disability, experiences of everyday living with mental health issues, and the ways in which people’s occupations may be impacted by ongoing health conditions. Recent projects focus on tertiary education experiences and support of students with disabilities, employment barriers and workplace supports for employees experiencing mental health issues, and recovery-oriented practice in mental health services; and involve interdisciplinary and interagency research collaborations.

Ellie co-authored the research report Supporting tertiary students with disabilities: Exploring the use of individualized and institution-level approaches in practice. Adelaide, SA: National Council for Vocational & Educational Research (NCVER).

Associate Professor Gerry Rayner is an education-focussed academic within the Monash University Office of Learning and Teaching. He is the lead Academic Facilitator of the CEED (Continuing Education Excellence Development) Module: Teaching Inclusively for Disability.

Gerry Rayner has worked as an academic in Biological Sciences, coordinating large enrolment first year units, researching and evaluating educational practice and innovation, and supporting programs in student transition and orientation, and their longer-term career development, including work-integrated learning.

I have attached some promotional collateral to this email and I ask that you use your networks to advertise both the broader week and your individual activities and events. Some of these can be used in Facebook posts, on screens, email signatures, printed etc.

Muscle, bone and joint conditions – consumer forums for those affected

One in three Australians are affected by muscle, bone and joint conditions, such as arthritis, osteoporosis, back & neck pain, fibromyalgia, gout and lupus. Yet these conditions receive very little attention.

These forums from MOVE are to help change this. Information gained will be used to guide future investment in muscle, bone and joint research, advocacy, education.

MOVE are trying to capture all age groups and particularly younger people with muscle, bone and joint conditions that often get left out..

There are two roles available:

Law, Arts, Commerce and Science Internship Program:Ideal for students studying Law, Arts, Commerce, Business, Communications, Legal or Finance.

Economics and Finance Intern: Ideal for students studying Economics, Finance or Commerce.

Internships can be undertaken in Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra or Brisbane.

MS Mega Swim – 24 hour event

Monash Sport is hosting a 24 hour Mega Swim to raise funds for people living with Multiple Sclerosis. The event is a 24 hour team event and is open to people of all swimming abilities with the key focus of participation as well as fundraising for MS.
