New Resources to Support Autistic LGBTIQA+ Young People

I CAN Network are very proud to announce the launch of a valuable new video resource ‘Supporting Autistic LGBTIQA+ Young People’.

Premiering at their AWETISM 2021 Virtual Expo in November 2021, it was developed by Sam Rose as part of a HEY grant from the Youth Affairs Council Victoria and shaped by 70+ youth collaborators from across Australia.

What Does the Workshop Cover?

Sam Rose (they/ them) is a published author on supporting Autistic LGBTIQA+ young people and one of our fantastic I CAN Program Facilitators!

In this training video, Sam explores several topics to help youth workers, school staff, families and professionals understand how to support Autistic LGBTIQA+ young people.

Specific topics include:

• What Autistic LGBTIQA+ young people want you to know.
• Understanding Autism and neurodiversity.
• Understanding gender diversity.
• Navigating pronouns and respectful language.
• Appreciating and accommodating sensory, social & communication differences.
• Creating safe and inclusive spaces.
• Nurturing positive identity.

Additionally, I CAN Network have created tips sheets and recommended resources (3 distinct sets) for Autistic LGBTIQA+ young people, the adults who support them and service providers.

I CAN Online – Austistic LGBTIQA+ Group

Looking to connect with like-minded people?

I CAN Network’s Autistic LGBTIQA+ online mentoring groups available to 13-22 year-olds offer a safe space for participants to connect with peers and mentors with shared experiences.

The groups safely explore topics including Autistic & Queer identity and culture, belonging and social connection, pronouns, gender and sexuality, self-care, sensory needs and emotional regulation.

The GradWISE Industry Accessibility Week is Back for 2022!

The week includes sessions with speakers from various organisations who will provide information on their graduate opportunities. There will be opportunities for questions, lunchtime activities to break up the day and tips on how to make your application stand out.

• GradWISE’s Industry Accessibility Week will run from Monday, 14 to Friday, 18 February 2022.
• Each day will kick-off at 9:30am and wrap up at 2:30pm (AEDT). As every session is optional, you can join any session that match your interests and career goals.

Program Facilitators and Mentors – Barwon/Geelong and Kilmore

I CAN’s Program Facilitators are responsible for the delivery of weekly group mentoring sessions for a select group of Autistic students.

The Program Facilitator will work with and coach the Mentor they have been assigned, customise the session content to their mentees, and support the relationships and expectations of stakeholders.

The commitment involves a fixed number of hours per mentoring session.

Blind Citizens Australia Hugh Jeffrey Scholarship program Applications are Now Open!

We are excited to announce that applications are now open for the second round of the Blind Citizens Australia Hugh Jeffrey Scholarship. This scholarship aims to increase the opportunities available to people who are blind, or vision impaired to participate in tertiary and further education.

This scholarship is open to anyone currently enrolled in, or planning on enrolling in, a post-secondary study program.

Scholarship amounts of up to $5,000 are awarded to support students in their studies.

If you are planning on studying this year, are already enrolled in a course, or thinking about study this year – this may be a great way to kickstart your study in 2022!

Australian Network on Disability and Australian Institute of Company Directors – Directing Change Scholarship

Australian Network on Disability (AND) has some wonderful opportunities that will support leaders with disability to increase their governance knowledge and access to board positions, and career seekers with disability to gain valuable industry based mentoring.

Launching the Directing Change Scholarship – Australian Network on Disability and the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) are partnering to provide an active solution to remove the barriers people with disability face.

Australian Network on Disability and AICD are offering 15 full-fee scholarships to undertake either the Foundations of Directorship program or the Company Directors Course at AICD. Plus 8 months of mentoring with an Australian business leader to help participates maximise their board career opportunities.

Students who complete our Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care are eligible to enrol into a Bachelors of Education at Monash.

You may be eligible for funding from VERTO if;

The Victorian Government has partnered with the Commonwealth Government to create a JobTrainer Fund.

This will provide additional funding to increase access to training for Victorians who have been most impacted by COVID – 19.

• If you are aged between 17-24 or a job seeker you may be eligible to benefit from free or low fee training places.
• A current and valid Commonwealth Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card or Veteran’s Gold Card
• A separation certificate from your employer
• A letter from their employer or company receiver stating that you have been made redundant or will be retrenched.

There is only a limited number of funded spots under the Job Trainer Initiative.

Applications Now Open for the DJCS 2022 Disability Scholarship Program

The Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS) is pleased to announce applications are open for the 2022 Disability Scholarship Program.

What is the Disability Scholarship Program?

One major and two minor scholarships are awarded annually to Victorian students with disability studying at the diploma, advanced diploma, undergraduate or postgraduate level.

Scholarships are offered in the following areas of study:

• law
• criminology
• paralegal work
• psychology
• social work
• other justice-related fields

New Opportunities With I CAN Network for 2022

I CAN Network mentors more than 2000+ young people each year via their school-based and national online group mentoring programs.

I CAN are a proudly neurodiverse organisation and feel strongly about providing a workplace that celebrates and nurtures Autistic talent.
