2. The Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience

There’s a revolution on campus.  It comes dressed in black hoodies, with a mission to smash inequalities in Indigenous education.  It’s called AIME – the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience.

AIME partners university students one-on-one with Indigenous high school students from the local area in a mentoring relationship.  Put simply, AIME brings Indigenous high school students into contact with university students in a way that gives them the chance to get through school.

AIME is at your campus in 2010. AIME started in 2005 out of the University of Sydney with 25 Uni students putting their hands up to mentor 25 Indigenous students in Redfern. They put their hands up to leave a legacy.

Now in 2010 AIME will be working with close to 1000 Indigenous students across the East Coast of Australia. It’s an enormous vote of confidence from the public that we’re able to start working with Australia. You can be part of this.

We ask you to give up one hour a week (outside uni commitments) over 17 weeks on a Friday. That’s 17 hours, which could change an Aboriginal kid’s life.

AIME will drive an education revolution across Australia for Indigenous students. We cannot do it without the belief and commitment from you.

To hear the AIME message and ask any questions, get along to info sessions at:
Date: Wednesday 10 March
Time: 12 pm, 1 pm, 2 pm
Venue: L4, Go8, Go8

An info stall will be run the basement that day, where you will meet your Program Manager Simone Carré.

2. Law Student Mentoring Program

On behalf of Victorian Women Lawyers and the Women Barristers Association, I am delighted to invite all female students currently enrolled in Victorian law schools to participate in the 2010 Law Student Mentoring Program.

Now in its third year, the Program has developed into a celebrated vehicle for encouraging the next generation of female lawyers to gain valuable insights into the legal profession from current practitioners.

Wherever possible, each student will be paired with a mentor who shares common professional interests and geographical proximity. Pairs will be expected to meet at least once a month. If there are insufficient mentors to cater for student demand, preference will be given to students in their final or second last year of study. This year’s Program will run from mid-April, 2010 to April, 2011.

Contact for queries and email Expression of Interests forms to:

3. Victoria Law Foundation Legal Sector Internship Program 2010/11

Applications are invited from law students for the Victoria Law Foundation 2010/11 Legal Sector Internship Program.

The program facilitates mutually beneficial relationships between law students and public sector agencies, government, the judiciary and other legal institutions. Law students gain experience in areas such as legal policy development, research, community legal education and legal and community sector capacity building that may inform their career choices and professional thinking.

Organisations welcome the voluntary assistance afforded by talented law students and appreciate the opportunity to promote their work to potential employees and colleagues.

Now in its seventh year of operation, the program has attracted high calibre students whose interests and experience are then matched with the particular project needs of participating organisations.

As many as 25 agencies participate in the program each year. Agencies are diverse and have included the Victorian Bar, Department of Justice, Magistrates’ Court of Victoria, Judicial College of Victoria, Victorian Law Reform Commission, Victorian Parliament Law Reform Committee, Aboriginal Family Violence Prevention Legal Service, Office of the Public Advocate, Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission, National Institute of Forensic Science, Sentencing Advisory Council, Liberty Victoria, and the Foundation itself, among others.

1. ECNA Leadership Opportunities

Looking for a leadership opportunity that makes a real difference (outside the classroom)?

Every student should harness their passion, find their purpose, and reach their potential. This is the belief of a young not-for-profit organisation – Extra Curricular Network Australia (ECNA).

ECNA is expanding to Monash University, so this is your opportunity to be part of our enthusiastic team!

ECNA started with humble beginnings in 2007 at the University of Melbourne. We are a not-for-profit that encourages students to get involved in community organisations and skill development programs by only selecting those suitable for tertiary students. We categorise them by the nature of activities involved and also the skills developed during participation.

Being part of our team or getting involved in extra-curricular activities we promote can be rewarding. We also intend for you learn and grow in the process so that you:

Develop leadership skills
Become socially and ethically aware individuals
Have a wealth of practical experience to enhance CV and employability

It’s always exciting to create something new for the benefit of all your peers at university.

Check out our website to find positions available at Monash:
www.ecna.com.au

Send us a copy of your CV and inform us on what position(s) you are interested in.

2. Human Rights Act – Myth Busters

Since the National Human Rights Consultation Committee recommended that Australia adopt a Human Rights Act in October 2009, many of those opposed to an Act have waged an effective scare campaign against it.  In the course of the debate, we believe that the ‘no’ case has thrown up many myths about a Human Rights Act.

In response, the Castan Centre will be sending out a new ‘myth buster’ each day over the next few weeks.  The myth busters are designed to counter many of the arguments made by the ‘no’ case.

How to receive our myth busters

On our website each myth will be posted at:
www.law.monash.edu.au/castancentre/myth-busters/index.html

Via Twitter:  To receive a link to each new myth buster see:
