1. Workshops for preparing for final assessments

Student Academic Success (SAS) will be running a set of workshops to support students in the final phase of their teaching period.

The workshops will acquaint students with E-exams, share effective ways to approach final assessments and offer strategies for revision and time management.

All workshops are on Zoom and will be recorded.

1. Monash Law Chambers + Library node – Extended opening hours

From the start of Trimester 2, Monash Law Chambers is open for extended hours.

For a 6-week trial basis, the new hours will be:

• Monday to Thursday: 8:15am to 10.00pm
• Friday: 8:15am to 9.00pm
• Saturday and Sunday: 10.00am to 5.00pm

The Library node opening hours will also be extended to match the new Chambers opening hours. This will help students who want to pick up holds and self-loan, as well as self-return, books after working hours. For further information please contact the Law Library team: lib-lawteam-l@monash.edu.

After 6.00pm access to Chambers is only via the formal front entrance.

During the trial, we will monitor usage of Chambers to help inform decision-making about Chambers opening hours on an ongoing basis.

2. Counselling services at Chambers

Counselling services will also return to Chambers from the start of Trimester 2.

In-person and telehealth appointments can be made online here.

3. Legal Project Management (LAW5471)

Starting in July 2021 for Masters and JD students, Legal Project Management (LAW5471) provides a framework to operationalise innovation in legal practice.

Legal project management skills enhance your employment prospects in the current legal services market, and indeed also to wider industry opportunities.

You will work in project management groups in a legal setting and communicate effectively to team members, project stakeholders and sponsors.

Case studies and live examples used in this unit, including for the assessment pieces, will include international content.

4. Learn about dispute resolution from former judges (LAW5475)

1. Let’s do that again: 2nd Year LLB Social-Hunt

Want to hit rewind and start again? 2020 was a challenging year to kick off your university studies, especially when it came to making in-person social connections with new friends and study buddies.

With this in mind, all 2nd year Bachelor of Law (LLB) students are invited to this special event.

The LLB Social-Hunt is an on-campus scavenger hunt held at Clayton Campus. By participating you’ll get to know the campus better, learn lots about your study environment and most importantly make some new friendships.

There will be some more senior LLB students there too, who can give you all sorts of tips and advice about life as a law student on campus.

2. Entrepreneurship and the Law (LAW4540)

The golden age of entrepreneurship calls for proactive legal/commercial advisors who have an understanding of the innovation lifecycle.

For the very first time Entrepreneurship and the Law (LAW4540) is being offered as a winter intensive for Bachelor of Laws (LLB) students, beginning in June.

The unit will cultivate your ability to navigate the entrepreneurial journey, using innovative problem solving techniques.

Set in the practical context of relationships, we will explore how to break out of traditional legal silos to develop a dynamic, multi-disciplinary approach, whilst remaining mindful of the many related risks and opportunities that impact innovation.

This unit helps you tackle client challenges such as business formation, funds raising, trademarking, and structuring new business in new industries. Creating disruption within the realms of good governance requires a new type of lawyer – one that ‘gets it’. The lawyer of the future will add value and channel entrepreneurial energy.

 1. International Domain Name Arbitrations ft. The Hon Neil Brown QC (Monday 10 May)

Curia Legal presents the Honourable Neil Brown QC 

Join the Hon Neil Brown QC as he brings his wealth of experience to discuss arbitration and mediation, domestic and international and one of his specialties, domain name arbitration.

The Hon Neil Brown QC is a Chartered Arbitrator, Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, a nationally accredited mediator and a member of many Australian and international mediation and arbitration panels. The Hon Neil Brown QC has also been a Minister in the Federal Government, a Member of the Federal Parliament and a delegate to the General Assembly of the United Nations and other national and international organisations. Most recently, he was appointed to the Panel of Conciliators at the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) at Washington, USA and is recognised internationally as a leading arbitrator on domain name disputes. In addition to advising, contributing and lecturing on domain name disputes, the Hon Neil Brown QC is also the founder of the website Domain Times, an authoritative commentary on all domain name issues.

2. Members Remedies: Exclusive ABL event for Monash Law students (Wed 12 May)

Shareholders regularly find themselves in conflict with the company and its directors over the conduct of the company’s business or the acts and omissions of the company’s directors.

When those conflicts arise, the client’s question is “What can I do to protect my interest, or to make the directors do what I want?”

Using real world examples, this presentation by Susanna Ford and Stephen Lloyd, Litigation Partners at ABL, will explore the remedies available to shareholders and discuss the nuances of each remedy.

The presentation will also consider the same questions from the company side, by asking how the company and its directors might respond to an action brought by a shareholder.

5. UN Commission on Human Rights: ‘A Very Great Enterprise’ (Tues 18 May)

When the General Assembly established the Human Rights Council in 2006, it asked for a review of its ‘work and functioning’ five years after its establishment. The will to elevate the Council to a Principal Organ of the UN did not materialise by 2011; in 2011 the Council put off that decision by another 10 to 15 years. The Council should review its status between now and 2026.

How should we rethink the way the Human Rights Council functions?
