1. Applications for JD Professional Practice (LAW 5050)

Students are now able to make Application for Professional Practice for Clinical Period 1 (summer) 2017/2018.

The Clinical Period 1 (summer) 2017 dates are:

  • Group A: 12 October 2017 –  18 January 2018; or
  • Group B: 16 October 2017 –  22 January 2018

1. Class actions, litigation funding and access to justice

The Victorian Law Reform Commission (VLRC) is currently inquiring into access to justice issues arising in connection with class actions and litigation funding. In this lecture, A/Prof Michael Legg (UNSW Law) will address selected questions raised in the VLRC’s discussion paper dealing with the regulation of litigation funders and lawyers, including common fund orders and contingency fees, the certification of class actions and the settlement of class actions. Commentary will be provided by Dr Tania Penovic (Monash Law) and Mr David Burstyner (Adley Burstyner). This event is hosted by the Australian Centre for Justice Innovation and Centre for Commercial Law and Regulatory Studies.

2. Diversity & Inclusion Week

The Diversity and Inclusion team is proud to announce the event schedule for Diversity & Inclusion Week at Monash (28 August – 1 September).

Diversity & Inclusion Week is an opportunity for the university community to come together to celebrate our diverse community and strengthen our inclusive culture.

This year, Diversity & Inclusion Week will be the biggest that Monash has seen, with events for staff and students across the Caulfield, Clayton Parkville and Peninsula campuses.

There will be a range of events and activities, including:

  • Workshops for academic and professional staff on LGBTIQ inclusion
  • A Human Library event where people of different backgrounds and experiences share their stories

3. The School Lawyer Program: Providing accessible legal services to young people

Presented by Vincent Shin, School Lawyer at The Grange P12 College.

The Australian Centre for Justice Innovation has collaborated with the Progressive Law Network to host a public lecture on the School Lawyer Program.

This innovative program has assisted students and parents with legal issues including consumer law problems, criminal law matters, family law and family violence matters, homelessness, fines and employment law problems. Come along to learn more about how this program is improving access to justice.

1. Survey: Mental health of Monash Law students

It is important that all students at Monash thrive.

A team of researchers from the Law and Health Science Faculties at Monash University are conducting research into the correlation between empathy levels and mental health and wellbeing for Monash Law students.

The Monash researchers carrying out the research include Dr Becky Batagol, Dr Adiva Sifris, Dr Ben Spivak and Associate Professor Brett Williams.

Please complete the online survey. It will only take 25 minutes of your time and might result in changes which will improve the mental health and wellbeing of law students in general.

All participants who complete the survey will go in the draw to win one of 5 Coles Group & Myer Gift Cards valued at $50 each. 2. Myer Innovation Fellowship 2018

Since it was launched three years ago, the Myer Innovation Fellowship program has unearthed nine amazing individuals who have used the Fellowship to help realise their big idea.

The program seeks exceptional leaders across all sectors (private, public and non-profit) and from all types of professional backgrounds. The selection panel will consider both quality of the break-through idea and the capacity of the applicant to implement this idea. It is expected that in 2018 three Fellows will each receive $100,000 along with select administrative and operational support for their twelve months commitment to the program.

Key eligibility criteria:

  • Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • Reside in Australia for the majority of the Fellowship period
  • Be prepared to take a sabbatical from their current role for twelve months
  • Have a proven track record of risk-taking, out-of-the-box thinking
  • Have an ability to turn ideas into action
  • Have well-developed networks within an area of the proposed project.

The proposed project must:

  • Be based in Australia
  • Be aligned with one or more of the three The Myer Foundation’s and Sidney Myer Fund’s program areas of Education, Poverty and Disadvantage, and
  • Sustainability and the Environment
  • Have been in development for not longer than three years.

3. Green Steps @ Monash Sustainability Leadership Program

Do you want to gain industry skills that allow you to help make businesses more sustainable and future ready?

Green Steps @ Uni is an award winning program for university students that provides you with sustainability leadership skills through demonstrating your commitment to create change via an online platform (Take One Step), participating in intensive face-to-face skills training and gaining sustainability consultancy project experience.

The program and training component is highly interactive and emphasises teamwork and student participation. You’ll be learning from our highly experienced trainers, guest speakers and other participants from a range of study areas.

Participants will be exposed to a range of expertise on climate change and carbon management, behaviour change, sustainability leadership, influencing and effective communication, harnessing technology and disruption and futures thinking.

6. Faculty Managed Internship: The National Human Rights Society of Malaysia (HAKAM)

The National Human Rights Society of Malaysia (HAKAM) was formed in 1988 in response to growing concerns over human rights violations in Malaysia. The call to form HAKAM came from two of the nation’s former Prime Ministers, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj and Tun Hussein Onn, alongside other prominent leaders of civil society.

The society’s objectives are, inter alia, to promote, preserve and defend human rights in Malaysia. Over the years, HAKAM has engaged in a wide range of issues, from advocating for the rights of indigenous communities, lobbying to abolish draconian laws inconsistent with principles of human rights, raising awareness of human rights through campaigns guided by research projects, and pushing for ratification of international and regional human rights instruments.

HAKAM strives to continue advocating for human rights, in the hopes of inculcating new generations of Malaysians who can bravely speak out for themselves.”

You are applying to be part of the Wednesday night volunteer team, which provides advice to clients experiencing a wide range of legal problems.

Students are rostered to volunteer on Wednesday nights on a fortnightly basis from 6:00pm until approximately 8:30pm. Commencement date is on 4 October 2017.

Tuesday Night Family Law Advice Only Service

The Tuesday Family Law Advice Service handles matters relating to Children, Divorce and Intervention Orders.

Students are rostered to volunteer on a Tuesday night on a fortnightly basis from 6:00pm until approximately 8:30pm. Commencement date is on 3 October 2017.

In each session, volunteers will:

  • Interview clients
  • Develop practical and research skills
  • Have the opportunity to learn and work under the supervision of qualified lawyers and barristers

Applications for the September 2017 intake will open 8:00am on 28 August 2017 and close 10:00pm on 3 September 2017. For an application form please see our website.

Application forms are not available before 28 August 2017.

Preference will be given to students who have undertaken a Family Law Unit or have experience working/volunteer.

9. Cyber 9/12 Student Challenge

For the first time, the Cyber 9/12 Student Challenge will soon take place in Australia!

In the Cyber 9/12 Student Challenge, student teams tackle a – fictional but realistic – cyber attack and develop policy recommendations that respond to this evolving crisis. This competition will provide students across different academic disciplines with a deeper understanding of the challenges associated with cyber conflict in the Indo-Pacific. It will also provide a unique opportunity to interact with cyber security experts in industry, academia, and government.

Students enrolled in any undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, professional, or law program, including students in military academies, on the registration deadline (31 August 2017) are eligible to compete.

Digital disruption – it is no question that this has become the latest buzz-word in the legal profession, but what is it and how can law students be well equipped to face the changing legal landscape?

Monash Law Ambassadors presents a student publication that specifically caters to law students’ understanding of digital technologies in the legal sector. It features articles written by legal professionals and current students, who discuss how technology is changing the legal profession and how law students can adapt to these changes.

4. Connecting with Law Short Film Competition

Now in its tenth year, the Connecting with Law Short Film Competition is open to all students currently enrolled in an Australian law school.

To enter, create a 2-5 minute film about Groundbreakers: people, cases or judgements that have changed the shape of Australian law.

Your film should educate, entertain and engage fellow law students and help them connect with law. Get your name known in law and win great prizes!

  • 1st Prize – $1,500
  • 2nd Prize – $500
  • 3rd Prize – $250

5. Queen Mary Law Journal

The Queen Mary Law Journal is pleased to announce an open call for submissions for its Spring 2018 issue.

We are a peer reviewed, open access publication, which is available in print and online. Every year we publish work by undergraduates, postgraduates and legal practitioners from around the world.

While we accept articles addressing the study or practice of UK law, we especially welcome articles on the comparative analysis of UK law with other jurisdictions and articles highlighting the perplexities of the current law in general.

The deadline for submissions is 5 September 2017. Please find more information about submitting to the Spring issue.

6. Aurora Internship

7. Westpac Innovation Challenge 2017

The 2017 Westpac Innovation Challenge is now open to applications from start-ups, entrepreneurs and thought leaders with innovative solutions to transform Australia’s professional services sector, with a particular focus on accounting or legal practices.

The cash prize is worth $40,000.

1. AIIA International Careers Conference 2017

The Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA) is hosting its annual International Careers Conference (ICC) on 25 August at the Victorian Arts Centre to provide inspiration and career advice to Victorian students.

As Australia’s leading international affairs think tank, the AIIAV will bring together top experts in the fields of business, international affairs and development to mentor the next generation of Australian leaders.

The full-day conference will consist of speaking sessions and workshops, to encourage attendees to go beyond the classroom to engage with leaders.

2. The School Lawyer Program: Providing accessible legal services to young people

Presented by Vincent Shin, School Lawyer at The Grange P12 College.

The Australian Centre for Justice Innovation has collaborated with the Progressive Law Network to host a public lecture on the School Lawyer Program.

This innovative program has assisted students and parents with legal issues including consumer law problems, criminal law matters, family law and family violence matters, homelessness, fines and employment law problems. Come along to learn more about how this program is improving access to justice.

4. What do family lawyers really think of FDR?

In 2015 Susan Hamilton-Green surveyed about 110 practitioners to explore what family lawyers really thought about Family Dispute Resolution. Some of the responses were surprising.

It showed that FDR is a significant aspect of advice given by family lawyers, and that they balanced many factors when advising and directing their clients to FDR. It also highlighted various areas important for FDRPs in their ongoing relationships with family lawyers.

Susan Hamilton-Green is a family lawyer and a specialist in Family Law (LIV) since 1990. She is a trained arbitrator and conflict coach and provides mediation training, coaching, and supervision.

1. Monash Law Ambassador Presents: TechUp Law Publication

Digital disruption – it is no question that this has become the latest buzz-word in the legal profession, but what is it and how can law students be well equipped to face the changing legal landscape?

Monash Law Ambassadors presents a student publication that specifically caters to law students’ understanding of digital technologies in the legal sector. It features articles written by legal professionals and current students, who discuss how technology is changing the legal profession and how law students can adapt to these changes.

2. Connecting with Law Short Film Competition

Now in its tenth year, the Connecting with Law Short Film Competition is open to all students currently enrolled in an Australian law school.

To enter, create a 2-5 minute film about Groundbreakers: people, cases or judgements that have changed the shape of Australian law.

Your film should educate, entertain and engage fellow law students and help them connect with law. Get your name known in law and win great prizes!

  • 1st Prize – $1,500
  • 2nd Prize – $500
  • 3rd Prize – $250

3. Queen Mary Law Journal

The Queen Mary Law Journal is pleased to announce an open call for submissions for its Spring 2018 issue.

We are a peer reviewed, open access publication, which is available in print and online. Every year we publish work by undergraduates, postgraduates and legal practitioners from around the world.

While we accept articles addressing the study or practice of UK law, we especially welcome articles on the comparative analysis of UK law with other jurisdictions and articles highlighting the perplexities of the current law in general.

The deadline for submissions is 5 September 2017. Please find more information about submitting to the Spring issue.

4. Aurora Internship

The Aurora Project internship program places students and graduates with backgrounds in law, community development, archaeology and more at Indigenous sector organisations all around Australia.

Work in land rights, policy development, research and social justice.

5. Accelerator Monash startup program

Applications for the Accelerator Program to grow the next generation of Monash startups through an intensive three-month program and $20,000 seed funding for each selected team (~5 teams) is open.

This program is run by The Generator – the centrally supported initiative for entrepreneurship at Monash and is open to all students, staff and alumni.

6. Westpac Innovation Challenge 2017

The 2017 Westpac Innovation Challenge is now open to applications from start-ups, entrepreneurs and thought leaders with innovative solutions to transform Australia’s professional services sector, with a particular focus on accounting or legal practices.

The cash prize is worth $40,000.

This sector is a key contributor to the Australian economy; a major employer; and one that supports the growth and development of businesses across our economy. It’s also a very mature sector – and one that is ripe for technology-driven innovation.

Westpac’s challenge to entrepreneurs and innovators is to come up with the next big idea that will shape the future of this sector and support its growth.

7. Groza Learning Center Education Scholarship

The Groza Learning Center Education Scholarship was created to help students interested in higher education reach their goal of attending college or university.

Each year a theme will be chosen and students will have the chance to respond in a short essay.

This year’s theme is ‘Redemption‘.

One winner will be selected and receive $1000 towards higher education.

2. In Conversation with The Hon. Robert French AC

He was Australia’s twelfth Chief Justice of the High Court, as well as a celebrated advocate for indigenous rights.

The LSS are thrilled to announce the HONOURABLE ROBERT FRENCH AC will participate in a Q&A at a lecture on Wednesday 9 August 2017, exclusive for law students.

His Honour has held a distinguished career and often speaks to a packed-out theatre, where students have been captivated by his presence and words of wisdom. He will provide fascinating insights about what it is like to be the leader of the highest court in the land and how the law plays a part in the wider society.
