The Victorian Law Reform Commission (VLRC) is currently inquiring into access to justice issues arising in connection with class actions and litigation funding. In this lecture, A/Prof Michael Legg (UNSW Law) will address selected questions raised in the VLRC’s discussion paper dealing with the regulation of litigation funders and lawyers, including common fund orders and contingency fees, the certification of class actions and the settlement of class actions. Commentary will be provided by Dr Tania Penovic (Monash Law) and Mr David Burstyner (Adley Burstyner). This event is hosted by the Australian Centre for Justice Innovation and Centre for Commercial Law and Regulatory Studies.

Since it was launched three years ago, the Myer Innovation Fellowship program has unearthed nine amazing individuals who have used the Fellowship to help realise their big idea.
The program seeks exceptional leaders across all sectors (private, public and non-profit) and from all types of professional backgrounds. The selection panel will consider both quality of the break-through idea and the capacity of the applicant to implement this idea. The National Human Rights Society of Malaysia (HAKAM) was formed in 1988 in response to growing concerns over human rights violations in Malaysia. The call to form HAKAM came from two of the nation’s former Prime Ministers, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj and Tun Hussein Onn, alongside other prominent leaders of civil society.
The society’s objectives are, inter alia, to promote, preserve and defend human rights in Malaysia. Over the years, HAKAM has engaged in a wide range of issues, from advocating for the rights of indigenous communities, lobbying to abolish draconian laws inconsistent with principles of human rights, raising awareness of human rights through campaigns guided by research projects, and pushing for ratification of international and regional human rights instruments.

In the Cyber 9/12 Student Challenge, student teams tackle a – fictional but realistic – cyber attack and develop policy recommendations that respond to this evolving crisis. This competition will provide students across different academic disciplines with a deeper understanding of the challenges associated with cyber conflict in the Indo-Pacific. It will also provide a unique opportunity to interact with cyber security experts in industry, academia, and government.
Students enrolled in any undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, professional, or law program, including students in military academies, on the registration deadline (31 August 2017) are eligible to compete.

In 2015 Susan Hamilton-Green surveyed about 110 practitioners to explore what family lawyers really thought about Family Dispute Resolution. Some of the responses were surprising.
It showed that FDR is a significant aspect of advice given by family lawyers, and that they balanced many factors when advising and directing their clients to FDR. It also highlighted various areas important for FDRPs in their ongoing relationships with family lawyers.
Susan Hamilton-Green is a family lawyer and a specialist in Family Law (LIV) since 1990. She is a trained arbitrator and conflict coach and provides mediation training, coaching, and supervision.

The 2017 Westpac Innovation Challenge is now open to applications from start-ups, entrepreneurs and thought leaders with innovative solutions to transform Australia’s professional services sector, with a particular focus on accounting or legal practices.
The cash prize is worth $40,000.
This sector is a key contributor to the Australian economy; a major employer; and one that supports the growth and development of businesses across our economy. It’s also a very mature sector – and one that is ripe for technology-driven innovation.
Westpac’s challenge to entrepreneurs and innovators is to come up with the next big idea that will shape the future of this sector and support its growth.

The Groza Learning Center Education Scholarship was created to help students interested in higher education reach their goal of attending college or university.
Each year a theme will be chosen and students will have the chance to respond in a short essay.
This year’s theme is ‘Redemption‘.
One winner will be selected and receive $1000 towards higher education.

He was Australia’s twelfth Chief Justice of the High Court, as well as a celebrated advocate for indigenous rights.
The LSS are thrilled to announce the HONOURABLE ROBERT FRENCH AC will participate in a Q&A at a lecture on Wednesday 9 August 2017, exclusive for law students.
His Honour has held a distinguished career and often speaks to a packed-out theatre, where students have been captivated by his presence and words of wisdom. He will provide fascinating insights about what it is like to be the leader of the highest court in the land and how the law plays a part in the wider society.
Registration for this event will be open between 9:00am 28 July – 5:00pm 4th August.
Places are limited so registration is on a first in best dress basis.

In 2015 Susan Hamilton-Green surveyed about 110 practitioners to explore what family lawyers really thought about Family Dispute Resolution. Some of the responses were surprising.
It showed that FDR is a significant aspect of advice given by family lawyers, and that they balanced many factors when advising and directing their clients to FDR. It also highlighted various areas important for FDRPs in their ongoing relationships with family lawyers.
Susan Hamilton-Green is a family lawyer and a specialist in Family Law (LIV) since 1990. She is a trained arbitrator and conflict coach and provides mediation training, coaching, and supervision.
