Position purpose

Monash aims to facilitate a positive and successful transition for all commencing students to their discipline(s) of study, campus, and learning environments through engagement processes which provide academic, social, administrative and geographic familiarisation with Monash and embrace the diversity of their previous experiences.

As part of the suite of transition programs, Monash is introducing an early engagement program for students who are “First in Family” to attend university. The aim of the program is to provide a supportive service throughout the students first year using multiple communication channels including phone contact at key times from Student Success Advisers.

Student Success Advisers are responsible for providing general advice in relation to common transition issues experienced by students, making referrals to appropriate support services, and completing necessary record-keeping for each contact session.

This position reports to the Coordinator of Transition and Retention, Health and Wellbeing.

2.  Summer Prison Volunteer Opportunity

Want to do something worthwhile with your spare time over summer?

PLEA is looking for skilled and dedicated students to run legal education workshops in prisons over the summer break.
The Prison Legal Education & Assistance Project (PLEA) is currently recruiting volunteers to commence in December 2011.

PLEA is a student-run volunteer organisation, based at Monash-Oakleigh Legal Service which provides legal education to remand inmates at the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre, the Metropolitan Remand Centre in Deer Park and the Youth Justice Centre in Parkville.

PLEA is looking for Law Students who are willing to volunteer their time and energy to work with disadvantaged and marginalised people within the prison system.

Volunteers will research specific areas of the criminal justice system before conducting interactive seminars in both the Metropolitan Remand Centre and the Dame Phylis Frost Centre.

Summer volunteers will have the opportunity to become an ongoing volunteer, including working in our youth justice program and supporting inmates with legal research in prison libraries.

PLEA volunteers gain invaluable insight into the criminal law, the prison system and prison justice. All roles require excellent communication skills, initiative, patience and sensitivity – all guided by a firm committment to social justice and incarecration issues.

Applicants are required to commit a minimum of 6 hours per week between December 2011 – March 2012, as well as fortnightly prison visits.

1. Conference – Are States Meeting Their Responsibilities to Trafficked Persons?

We are proud to invite you to the 2011 Castan Centre for Human Rights Law / Mallessons Stephen Jaques Annual Lecture presented by:

Conference – Ms Joy Ezeilo, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons, Especially in Women and Children

Destination countries for human trafficking are obliged to protect and assist victims of trafficking.  This includes providing trafficked persons with protection of privacy and identity, measures for ‘physical, psychological and social recovery of victims’, and their physical safety.  They should also provide effective remedies for trafficked persons, such as compensation, and restitution.  Are destination States meeting these responsibilities in the 21st century?

Joy Ngozi Ezeilo is a human rights lawyer and professor at the University of Nigeria. She has also served in various governmental capacities, including as Honourable Commissioner for Ministry of Women Affairs & Social Development in Enugu State and as a Delegate to the National Political Reform Conference. She has consulted for various international organizations and is also involved in several NGOs, particularly working on women’s rights. She has published extensively on a variety of topics, including human rights, women’s rights, and Sharia law. Ms. Ezeilo was conferred with a national honour (Officer of the Order of Nigeria) in 2006 for her work as a human right defender. Ms. Ezeilo assumed her functions as Special Rapporteur on 1 August 2008.

Where liberty is restricted in closed environments, such as prisons, police cells, immigration detention, and closed psychiatric and disability settings, the potential for human rights abuses is high. Copies of Examination Scripts

A new procedure has been put in place for students who wish to request copies of their exam scripts.  At the end of the exam period the relevant application form will be made available on the Law Faculty website:

Students must submit the application form and cash payment of $5 per exam by the due date, which will be clearly stated on the form.  NO LATE APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

2. Noticeboard Policy

If wanting to post a notice on the boards in the basement area please do the following:

  • DO use ONLY black chart pins (if there are not enough available please ask the marketing team on level 2 by calling 52326 on the reception phone)
  • DO not use other pins or they will be replaced.
  • DO not take pins from other adverts, or take pins from the board when taking an old notice down.
  • DO NOT use blue tack, sticky tape or a staple gun to put up notices
  • DO NOT place your notices on top of others
  • ONLY place notices on the allocated boards, not on other walls and/or windows

In the past few weeks the privilege of the noticeboards has been abused by people taking noticeboard pins. This makes the faculty look messy and disregards other people’s notices.
