1. Are you hoping to be admitted to legal practice?

The Victorian Legal Admissions Board (VLABwill visit Monash Clayton Campus and Monash Law Chambers (CBD) to speak about admission to the Supreme Court of Victoria, with a particular emphasis on key disclosure requirements and satisfying the Board that you are a fit and proper person to be admitted to the legal profession.

This is an important event for all law students and you should try to attend if you are able. The presentation will take 50 minutes, inclusive of question time.

The VLAB presenters will be The Hon. David Habersberger QC (VLAB Deputy Chairman) and Mrs Deborah Jones (VLAB CEO).

3. Secure Yourself as a Freelancer

As the gig economy continues its rapid growth in Australia and across the world, an increasing number of businesses are turning to freelancers to complete a range of tasks. The Australian Industry Group found that over one third of Australians were engaged in some form of freelance work over the past year.

The most in-demand freelance jobs cut across a variety of different skill sets, including: mobile and software development, graphic design, excel data entry, copywriting and proofreading. Yet, one thing almost all freelancers have in common is a need for more clarity around their legal obligations with contractors.

4. Supply Chain Fundamentals Course

What is a supply chain and how does it makes our modern lives possible?

The Wayfinder Supply Chain Fundamentals Cours is a free, half-day course, which will explain the basic functions and flows of a supply chain. It is presented by VICT (Victoria International Container Terminal).

You will learn why managing real-life supply chains can be a complex, challenging but a crucial task.

Topics covered include the basic trade-offs in supply chain management, modern ethics considerations, and an overview of the emerging technologies that promise to underpin the supply chains of tomorrow.

6. National Law Honours Student Conference

The National Law Honours Student Conference provides graduating LLB and JD students and recent graduates with the opportunity to present their law honours research, senior research thesis or comparable major research project in an academic setting.

Session chairs in the students’ research field will offer constructive feedback and advice, including possible publication.

There is a $1,500 prize for best presentation sponsored by the Australian Academy of Law.

The conference is held on Saturday December in Sydney. Attendance is free and lunch and drinks are provided. A keynote address will be provided by Dr Sacha Molitorisz of the Faculty of Law, University of Technology Sydney.

1. Volunteer Opportunities – Monash Law Clinics Clayton

Volunteer Opportunities are available at the Monash Law Clinics Clayton (MLCC) for Monash Law Students. Please note that due to high demand, late applications will not be accepted.

Wednesday Night Advice Only Service

Applications for the Wednesday Night General Advice Session at Monash Law Clinics Clayton are open until 5pm Friday 30 August 2019.

The Wednesday night volunteer team provides advice to clients experiencing a wide range of general law problems.

Students are rostered to volunteer on Wednesday nights on a fortnightly basis from 6:00pm until approximately 8:30pm. This volunteer period will run until April 2020.

You will be notified about your Application by 11 September 2019.

Orientation will be held on Wednesday 25 September 2019 at 6pm at MLCC.

Sessions will commence on Wednesday 2 October 2019.

Tuesday Night Family Law

Applications for Tuesday Night Family Advice Session at Monash Law Clinics Clayton are open until 5pm Friday 30 August2019.

The Tuesday night volunteer team provides advice to clients experiencing a wide range of family law problems.

2. Clinical psychologist support at Chambers

A clinical psychologist, Dr Emily Horwill, will now be available for counselling appointments on Wednesdays at Monash Law Chambers, CBD.

This is a free and confidential service that students can access.

Appointments will be available from 10.30am to 3.30pm on Wednesdays in Meeting Room 1 on Level 1.

In order to make an enquiry or to book an appointment, please email emily.horwill@monash.edu.  (Please note that this email is not checked daily).

There is also scope for Emily to run a 3-hour safeTALK session on being suicide alert and/or a 2-day Mental Health First Aid workshop if there is sufficient interest from staff or from student groups.

3. Aurora Internship Program

The Aurora Internship Program has contributed to capacity building for Indigenous and Indigenous-sector organisations by placing over 2,400 talented and passionate interns.

The Program continues to place students and graduates from various educational backgrounds, including law, in full-time unpaid 4 to 6 week internships, at over 200 organisations Australia-wide, all with an Indigenous focus, working in the area of:

  • Native title
  • Land rights
  • Policy development
  • Advocacy
  • Justice
  • Health and Social welfare
  • Human rights
  • Community development
  • Environmental policy.

4. Westpac Future Leaders Scholarship

The Westpac Future Leaders Scholarship is one of five scholarships offered through the Westpac Scholars Trust which awards 100 scholarships every year, forever. The Trust was established in 2014 to help support individuals with the drive and ideas to shape the future of Australia.

17 Westpac Future Leaders Scholarships, valued up to $120,000 per student over two to three years, are available to 2020 PhD and Masters students from any discipline.

Applicants must demonstrate how their research or course work aligns with one of the scholarship program’s key focus areas – technology and innovation, driving social change or strengthening Australia’s ties with Asia. PhD students may also receive the RTP scholarship in addition to the Westpac Future Leaders Scholarship, providing value of over $200,000 collectively.

2020 applications are now open and close on Thursday 5 September.

5. University education research priorities – survey

Phase 2 of the Monash University education research priorities survey questionnaire is now live. The research study is to explore staff and student perceptions of what should be the priorities for University education research at Monash, what are the barriers to it being successful, and factors that what will enable its success.

The survey is conducted by the Monash Education Academy. The findings will help to develop a strategy to support higher education research.

The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. Please access the survey here.

For participating in this study, you will have the opportunity, at the end of the survey, to enter a prize draw for a $50 voucher.

6. Free language classes

Come to the MSA Language Drop In, from Week 1-10 (Semester 2) at Clayton Campus.

We provide the opportunity to learn basic language skills and to practice through weekly conversation catch-ups.

Economics experiments are taking place at Monash. Monash researchers use these experiments to study how people make decisions. Most involve playing simple games on a computer, or with pen and paper.

  • Help promote research at your university
  • No prior knowledge of economics is needed.
  • Most experiments take between 30 minutes and 2 hours.
  • Most participants earn between $15 and $30 per hour.
  • There is no deception, and no physical stress of any kind.
  • Participation is open to all students.
  • Your identity is kept confidential from other participants, and no personal information about you is shared with anyone else.

1. Us Too? Bullying and Sexual Harassment in the Legal Profession

The largest-ever global survey of legal professionals has revealed startling rates of bullying and sexual harassment in the legal profession:

  • 1 in 2 women and 1 in 3 men have experienced bullying in the workplace;
  • 1 in 3 women have been sexually harassed;
  • Half to three-quarters of bullying and sexual harassment cases are not reported.

How does the legal profession respond?

International Bar Association (IBA) Legal Advisor, Kieran Pender will present the findings of the IBA report.

2. Flammable Cladding Crisis – the Lacrosse Apartments Decision

Recently, the owners of apartments at the Lacrosse tower in Docklands won damages of approximately $12.3 million over a fire fuelled by flammable aluminium composite cladding that caused significant damage to the building in November 2014.
The decision was handed down by his Honour Judge Ted Woodward and Mr Romauld Andrew appeared for the respondent builders.
Together they will contextualise this decision within the ongoing flammable cladding crisis, in a presentation chaired by the Honourable Justice John Digby, Judge in Charge of the Technology, Engineering and Construction List.

3. War On e-Waste – with Craig Reucassel

What is e-Waste? How do we dispose of it correctly and recycle it?
