1. Is There a Case for Fair Use? Lessons from the US – Seminar

The Australian Law Reform Commission recently recommended that a “fair use” defence to infringement should be introduced into the Copyright Act in place of the current “fair dealing” defences.

The new defence would be based on principles recognised in the U.S., where fair use has been part of the copyright landscape for a long time. Judgments in a series of recent fair use cases in the US, the Google Books case being notable, suggest that the doctrine there is developing and that its scope may be extending. The Attorney-General has indicated that his government is unlikely to implement the recommendation, but fair use proponents are maintaining their campaign.

In this seminar, Professor Geoffrey Scott, Professor of Law at the Penn State University School of Law in the United States, will lead the panel in considering the development and practical application of fair use in the U.S. and the potential lessons that recent experience there might hold for copyright owners, users and lawyers in Australia.

The DSCV has been working closely with the Magistrate’s Court to divert defended civil matters (under $40,000) and appropriate Personal Safety Intervention Order matters to mediation. Gina will talk about the success and challenges of working with clients who want their day in court and the art of persuading them into mediation.

4. Monash Law Faculty’s 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner

Join us at our 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner

Reminisce with friends. Catch up with your former teachers and faculty staff.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of our first intake of students. In March 1964, 150 students arrived at what was then a muddy and less-developed Clayton campus, eager to begin their studies at Victoria’s new Law School.

We have come a long way since those early days. We will celebrate this milestone at a gala dinner in June.

With alumnus, popular ABC Radio host Jon Faine as our Master of Ceremonies, a special welcome from alumna the Hon. Chief Justice Marilyn Warren AC, and the launch of our faculty history by the Hon. Chief Justice Robert French AC – the event is sure to be a night to remember.

Time: 6.30pm – 11.30pm
Date: Saturday 28 June, 2014
Venue: Savoy Ballroom, Grand Hyatt Melbourne, 123 Collins Street, Melbourne
Dress formal (black tie optional)
Tickets $220
Register at the website

The night includes:

Pre-dinner drinks
Three-course meal
Live auction and entertainment
Door prizes
