1. Clerkship Masterclasses

The next Clerkship Masterclass will be held at the Monash Law Chambers in the City on Friday 23 June.

These workshops are designed to deliver essential, practical skills relating to research, writing, preparing memos and tips to work effectively during the Clerkship.

The Masterclass is presented by lawyers from top law firms, expert staff from the Law Library and from other legal organisations.

The Masterclass is primarily aimed at students who will shortly be undertaking a clerkship or equivalent.

A more detailed breakdown of the day will be provided once the program has been finalised.  A light lunch will be provided.

2. LIV Legal Careers Fair

Attended by hundreds of people each year, the LIV Legal Careers Fair is the premier event for Victorian students commencing a career in law.

If you are a penultimate or final-year law student interested in obtaining seasonal and graduate employment, this is the perfect event to get your feet wet and help you find out what sort of jobs are available.

1. Capstone Editing undergraduate scholarships

Capstone Editing is happy to announce 2 new annual undergraduate student grants of $3,000 each:

  • The Capstone Editing Research Scholarship for Honours Students
    $3,000 for one Honours student per year to assist with covering the costs associated with the research for their thesis. Applications are open annually from 1 January to 30 April. The scholarship will be awarded on 14 May every year. For more info or to apply, please see here.
  • The Capstone Editing Textbook Grant for Undergraduates
    $3,000 for one undergrad per year to assist with covering the cost of their textbooks for the duration of their degree. (The recipient will receive one $1,000 gift voucher per year for three years.) Applications are open all year. The grant will be awarded on 1 February every year. 2. Seeking Open Day student volunteers

Monash University’s Open Day for Clayton is fast approaching and will be held on Sunday 6 August 2017.

The Law Faculty is seeking Undergraduate student volunteers to assist on the day.

This will involve speaking with prospective students and their families about your experience of studying at Monash, giving directions, greeting guests, helping with set-up/pack down and much more!

Although these positions are voluntary roles, the faculty does provide training and $50 vouchers for students who volunteer half a day (9.15am – 1.15pm OR 12.30pm – 4.30pm) and $100 vouchers for students who volunteer for a whole day (9.15am – 4.30pm).

If you have good communication skills, and a well-rounded knowledge of the faculty and campus please complete the application form by Monday 19 June.

Applications are open for Clinical Period 4 2017 of the Professional Practice Elective Unit which takes place at Monash Oakleigh Legal Service, next to Clayton campus.

2. Capstone Editing postgraduate scholarships

Capstone Editing is happy to announce 2 new annual postgraduate student grants of $3,000 each:

  • The Capstone Editing Conference Travel Grant for Postgraduate Research Students
    $3,000 for one postgrad student per year to assist in covering the costs of attending a conference in relation to their degree. Applications are open annually from 1 July to 1 June. The grant is awarded on 30 June every year. For more info or to apply, please see here.

3. International LLM opportunity – Tel Aviv University Faculty of Law

You are invited to apply for the Parasol Foundation Trust International LL.M Program at Tel Aviv University Faculty of Law for the academic year 2017-2018.

Students can choose a general course of study or may specialise in:

Applicants to the International LL.M. must have completed an undergraduate degree in law (LL.B., JD, and Bachelor of Laws) prior to starting the LL.M. degree. Students in their final year of first degree studies may apply, and will be accepted on the condition they finish their first degree in good standing (above 80/100).

4. Italy research scholarships – International Institute for the Unification of Private Law

The International Institute for the Unification of Private Law invites applications for its research scholarships. These support top-level lawyers wishing to conduct research in the fields of uniform or comparative private law.

Postgraduate law students, academics, government officials with a good working knowledge of English or French may apply. Special attention will be given to applicants from developing and emerging economies.

Scholarships last for six weeks to two months. Between 15 and 20 scholarships are awarded each year. Funding will cover all or part of the cost of living expenses in Rome, Italy.

Please note applications close Friday 27 October 2017.

1. Asian Australian Lawyers – Celebration of the Appointment of His Honour Magistrate Raj Malhotra

His Honour Magistrate Raj Malhotra is the second person of Indian origin to be appointed a magistrate in Victoria.

Join His Honour next Wednesday 31 May as he speaks about his cultural experience growing up in Australia and tells stories from his extensive legal career, including as Crown Prosecutor for the Office of Director of Public Prosecutions in Western Australia and a member of the Adult Parole Board.

2. The Australia New Zealand Intervarsity Moot on Animal Law (ANIMAL)

Early Bird Registrations for the Australia New Zealand Intervarsity Moot on Animal Law (ANIMAL) are now open and run until Friday 9 June 2017.

5. Research Symposium on Reshaping Justice

Presented by the Law and Justice Foundation of NSW, this symposium Reshaping Justice: Client-centred service delivery, technology and innovation examines current issues facing the sector and how evidence-based research can be used to shape legal services that are responsive to client needs and interests.

The keynote speaker is leading civil justice authority Professor Dame Hazel Genn QC.

2. Shine Winter Clerkship – Victoria

Applications are now open for a two-week paid Winter Clerkship program at Shine Lawyers in July 2017.

Shine is looking for law students in their final year of study who are client-focused, enjoy a high performance work environment, and have well-developed interpersonal and communication skills.

A clerkship at Shine Lawyers will give insight into a large ASX-listed plaintiff litigation law firm, and will ensure you are well-positioned for any future graduate programs Shine offers.

1. LSS Exam Revision Seminars

The LSS Revision Seminars are back for 2017!

If you are after a HD or are simply looking to pass and you don’t feel like you can quite yet smash out perfect exam answers at the tip of a hat, these Revision Seminars are just the thing to get you to that point of enlightenment where you’ll be laughing all the way to a cracking score.

The LSS tutors that have been working tirelessly over this semester will be capping off all their endeavours with a 90-minute extravaganza. Why go? Because they’ll be breaking down exam answers bit-by-bit so you know exactly how to issue spot, define concepts and apply the law to a scenario.

2. Lawyers for Animals: Law Week Trivia Night

Monash Law students are warmly invited to participate in Lawyers for Animals’ second annual Law Week Trivia Night. Attendees should enjoy a fun evening in good company, test their general knowledge and help raise money for Edgar’s Mission and Pets Haven: a couple of hard-working animal rescue charities who desperately need the funds.

3. Neighbourhood Justice Centre: ‘Courting Solutions’ Mock Trial

Going beyond business-as-usual ‘blame and sanction’ justice, Courting Solutions shows what happens when treatment services work in a court that applies justice with people, instead of at or for them.

Designed for Law & Welfare students, the event seeks to illustrate how the NJC brings together defence, prosecutions, and case workers (drug and alcohol) within a criminal matter to assist the offender to find the solutions required to break the cycle of offending.

These techniques are unique to the NJC – the only full-service, holistic justice centre of this kind in Australia.

A mock trial illustrating the ground-breaking techniques used by the Neighbourhood Justice Centre’s Client Services and legal practitioners at this one-of-a-kind problem solving court, Courting Solutions is designed for practitioners who want to help their clients break the cycle of offending.

Expertly moderated, Courting Solutions stars Fitzroy Legal Service, Victoria Legal Aid, Victoria Police Prosecutors and NJC’s Client Services case workers and Magistrate.
