1. Free Public Lecture: How Gender Can Affect Progress Towards The UN’s Millennium Development Goals

Nana Oye Lithur is the Chief Executive Director of the Human Rights Advocacy Centre and is a respected human rights activist in Ghana.  Nana has led several fact finding missions to investigate human rights violations in Ghana and has also worked as a lecturer, presenting Human Rights/CHRI human rights lectures for journalism students. Nana has also been recognised for her work in human rights and in 2008 was a recipient and champion torch bearer for women’s rights. This event is co-sponsored BusEco PAL Program.

3. 2010 Postgraduate Conference in Public Law

The Gilbert + Tobin Centre of Public Law plays a prominent, independent role in public debate on issues vital to Australia’s future including Charters of Rights, federal reform, reconciliation and native title, refugees and migration law and the challenges of responding to terrorism.

Global Changers is a Global Change Leadership Course which gives passionate young leaders everything they need to make a tangible difference now, not just in the future.

Monash University has partnered with The Oaktree Foundation to develop a comprehensive leadership program for 50 of its students.

Global Changers is a leadership course that aims to equip university students with the skills necessary to enable them to enact change in their own communities.

The eighth-month part-time program includes courses in personal development, issues education and skills development.

The curriculum will also focus on the skills necessary to be a strong leader: self awareness, leadership, emotional intelligence, group dynamics, and facilitation.

3. Telders International Law Moot Court Competition 2010

For the past thirty-two years, the Telders International Law Moot Court Competition has been an annually recurring event and has grown to be one of the most prestigious in the field.

The Telders Competition gives many young and talented undergraduate law students all over Europe the opportunity to excel in international law, consequently testing their creativity and powers of persuasion in a friendly competition.

Every year a new and challenging case is devised for the students to argue. The Telders Case 2010, ‘The Case of Pirates in the Treasured Sea’, combines legal issues in various fields of international law including piracy and the law of the sea. You may find the case on our website at:

2. New Units – Enrol Now!

The Faculty is pleased to advise that Professor Samuel Murumba from the Brooklyn Law School in New York will be teaching the unit Current Issues in Intellectual Property (LAW7309), scheduled to commence on Wednesday 26 May, 2010.

The unit will concentrate on key, cutting-edge issues not covered in depth or at all in the other Intellectual Property Units. These issues mainly arise from the dramatic impact of complex technological and global developments on Intellectual Property law and practice.

They include:
IP-Jurisdictional issues, especially in the digital networked environment;The intersection of trademarks and commercial designations with domain names, especially the proposed generic top-level domain names (gTLDs) and domain names in non-roman characters which will have profound implications for online trademarks.
The expanding scope of trade mark protection (well-known marks/dilution, defensive registration etc).
Comparative database protection, including the EC Directive and US developments.
Comparative business method patents including the anticipated US Supreme Court decision in Bilskietc.

1. Appointment of Tipstaff to Justice Allsop, President NSW Court of Appeal

Position Description:
The primary role of Tipstaff is assisting the President with court related duties and research. This includes spending a substantial amount of time in court. 3. Law Student Mentoring Program

On behalf of Victorian Women Lawyers and the Women Barristers Association, I am delighted to invite all female students currently enrolled in Victorian law schools to participate in the 2010 Law Student Mentoring Program.

Now in its third year, the Program has developed into a celebrated vehicle for encouraging the next generation of female lawyers to gain valuable insights into the legal profession from current practitioners.

Wherever possible, each student will be paired with a mentor who shares common professional interests and geographical proximity. Pairs will be expected to meet at least once a month. If there are insufficient mentors to cater for student demand, preference will be given to students in their final or second last year of study. This year’s Program will run from mid-April, 2010 to April, 2011.

1. Australian Legal Philosophy Students’ Association – National Essay Competition

The Australian Legal Philosophy Students’ Association (ALPSA) are currently taking entries for our 2010 National Essay Competition. This is your chance to polish an old assignment into a paper that showcases your ability to discuss the complexities of legal philosophy shrouding a historical or controversial topic of your choosing.

Instead of gathering dust, your assignment could win 1^st place and $300 of the cash prize money generously donated by the University of Queensland.  The runner-up shall receive $150, and 3^rd place will receive $50.

Entries are open to undergraduates from around Australia, studying law, philosophy or international relations.  All unpublished essays between 2000 and 8000 words long are welcome.

3. Location of Recharging Stations for Computers

If you need to recharge your computer while at university, the Law Library has 8 lockers with powerpoint available for your use.

These lockers are located in the Print Room, near the entrance of the library (turn right as you enter the library). The lockers are red and clearly visible.

Please bring in a padlock, if you wish to leave the computer in a locker as there is no security.
