2. Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarship 2016

The Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarship offers students the opportunity to spend a semester studying at a leading Asian university.

Uniquely, the scholarships also offer the freedom to ‘build your own adventure’ enabling students to individualise their exchange program to enhance their Asian experience.

3. Taxation Law and Advanced Taxation Law

Considering an additional qualification?

Two of our LLB(Hons) units (LAW4704 Taxation Law and LAW4332 Advanced Taxation Law) have been approved by the Tax Practitioners Board as approved courses in Australian taxation law that can count towards qualification as a registered tax agent. Note that in addition to undertaking these units, there are other requirements that must also be met.

2. International Labour Law

3. Volunteers needed for Oral advocacy assessment for ICC and Jury Workshop

The Victorian Bar is looking for volunteers to play the role of witnesses for the advocacy assessment component of our Indictable Crime Certificate (ICC).

The mock trials will be held during June and July 2016, 9.00am -4.00pm in the Federal Court Level 9, 305 William Street, Melbourne (Corner William & Latrobe streets). We will have more dates released for assessments in June and July.

You will be given a copy of the materials particularly a witness statement which summarises your evidence. You will need to be very familiar with the facts and be prepared to give your evidence and be cross-examined.

It is an opportunity to see some experienced advocates at work.

1. ANIMAL 2016

The Australia New Zealand Intervarsity Moot on Animal Law (ANIMAL) is hosted by The Animal Law Institute and sponsored by Voiceless the animal protection institute.

ANIMAL is one of the largest student moots in Australia and New Zealand and it is the only animal law moot for Australian and New Zealand law students.

The competition is open to any student currently enrolled in a law degree in Australia or New Zealand. Teams can consist of either 2 or 3 individuals.

ANIMAL 2016 will be hosted by Flinders University, Adelaide (Grand Final winners of ANIMAL 2015) over the weekend of 17 – 18 September 2016.

4. The refugee, the person behind the mask: Human rights and security in the battering waves

Using an imaginary line starting in Melbourne, crossing the Middle East and Israel and ending at the Aegean Sea and Greece, this public lecture will try to sketch the profile of the refugee, particularly the boat refugee.

The refugee is first and foremost a human being, therefore the refugee issue is first and foremost a human rights law issue.

On this account, the lecture will demonstrate why security-oriented rhetoric is doomed to failure.

1. Rhodes Scholarships 2017 – applications now open

Applications for the Rhodes Scholarships for 2017 are now open and will close at 5.00 pm on Thursday 1 September 2016.

The Rhodes Scholarship is one of the oldest and most distinguished scholarships in the world.

Previous winners from Australia include prime ministers Malcolm Turnbull, Tony Abbott and Bob Hawke, Justices Hayne and Heydon of the High Court of Australia, and Justice Elizabeth Hollingworth of the Victorian Supreme Court, pioneer in evidence-based medicine Anna Donald, Director General of CIVICUS Dhananjayan Sivaguru Sriskandarajah, Nobel Prize winners Sir John Eccles and Lord Howard Florey, and infrastructure expert Sir Rod Eddington.

Successful candidates will receive assistance with their travelling expenses to the UK, as well as a monthly allowance to contribute towards their living expenses whilst in Oxford. In addition, all University tuition fees are paid on the scholar’s behalf by the Rhodes Trust.

Rhodes Scholarships are available to those who have completed by 15 June 2017, at least four years’ of university study, such as an outstanding Honours degree, a combined degree or graduate degree, and enjoy success at a range of activities such as sports, involvement in community activities, and have a desire to lead and make a difference in the world. 2. CESAA European studies Essay Competition

Contemporary European Studies Association of Australia (CESAA) wishes to announce that the 23rd CESAA Essay Competition is now open for entries.

Essays from any discipline dealing with contemporary (post-war) Europe and/or the European Union can be submitted for consideration in one of the following two categories:

• Best essay by an undergraduate student (2,000-4,000 words)
• Best essay by an honours or postgraduate student (2,000 -5,000 words)

3. Connecting with Law Short Film Competition

The Connecting with Law Short Film Competition is launching again for 2016.

Open to all Australian law students, the Connecting with Law Short Film Competition is an opportunity for students to get creative, get their name known in law and be in the running to win great prizes.

This year, students are invited to create a 2-5 minute film about what inspires them to study law, that will educate, entertain and engage their fellow law students and help them connect with law.

4. theDELINEATOR: facilitated ideation sessions for startups

Lots of people don’t consider themselves entrepreneurs. But it sometimes just takes an ideation session and they have come up with a number of interesting startup concepts in just a few hours.

This is an empowering, exciting and fun event that is great for team building and professional development.

We plan to run sessions in small groups of 10-30 people.

9. Inaugural Michael Taussig QC Family Law Essay Awards

The Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia is pleased to invite law students to participate in the inaugural Michael Taussig QC Family Law Essay Awards.

The Awards commemorate the life and contribution of Michael Taussig QC, one of the Family Law Section’s most outstanding members.

The Family Law Section is the largest of the Law Council’s specialist sections. Since its inception in 1985, the Section has developed a reputation as a source of innovative, constructive and informed leadership in all areas of family law reform and policy development. With a national membership of more than 2,500 family lawyers and related professionals, the organisation is committing to furthering the development of practice in family law for the benefit of the Australian community.

Two Awards will be offered in 2016, one for junior lawyers and the second for law students.

The student Award is open to law students from all Australian Universities, with a prize value of $1,500.

10. International Students Work Rights Legal Service

A new International Students Work Rights Legal Service is now operating in Victoria.

JobWatch Inc, in collaboration with the Study Melbourne Student Centre and Inner Melbourne Community Legal, is operating this new legal service at the Study Melbourne Student Centre every Thursday.

Study Melbourne Student Centre (SMSC) is a free and confidential ‘one stop shop’ where international students in Victoria can access a range of free support, information and welfare services.

As part of the service, a JobWatch lawyer will be based at the Study Melbourne Student Centre each Thursday from 9.00am until 5.00pm to give international students free and confidential legal advice about work-related matters. JobWatch is also available to assist international students with work-related matters during the rest of the week.

Inner Melbourne Community Legal (IMCL) is available to assist international students with general law consultations (not including immigration advice). A lawyer from IMCL will be at the Study Melbourne Student Centre every Thursday afternoon.

The Editorial Board of the International Trade and Business Law Review (‘the Review) are now inviting submissions for Volume XX of the Review.

The Review publishes leading articles consisting of original research, case notes, comments, and book reviews concerning international trade and business law, arbitration law and comparative law.

14. Summer Human Rights Institute in New York

The Summer Human Rights Institute (SHRI) is a 2-week certificate program that provides a comprehensive introduction to the theory and application of international human rights law, enabling individuals with limited time to gain an in-depth understanding of this critical field.

Participants take part in daily lectures and workshops with Fordham Law professors, as well as guest lecturers from New York’s prominent human rights community, and engage in up-close examination of real world legal aspects and tools of human rights law and practice.

16. Volunteers for Australian Advocacy Institute workshop – $100 vouchers

The Australian Advocacy Institute (AAI) is conducting an advocacy skills workshop for the Commonwealth DPP at the Family Court in Melbourne on Saturday 2 July 2016.

The workshop involves performance and review of various techniques in trial advocacy.

As part of the program, the AAI requires 4 volunteers to film some of the participant performances for the purpose of review. Filming will take 2 hours and be done using iPads that require no expertise other than to ‘point and shoot’.

Volunteers will each receive a $100 gift voucher for their service.

3. Clerkship Masterclass

The Clerkship Masterclass has been designed to assist students build essential skills for your Clerkship.

To attend you should have preferably secured a Seasonal Clerkship or equivalent.

Presented by lawyers from top law firms and expert staff from the Law Library, these workshops are designed to deliver essential, practical skills relating to research, writing, preparing memos and tips to work effectively during the Clerkship.

If possible please ensure that you bring a laptop with you. Law firms use Clerkships to identify students to take into their Traineeship programs. Make yours the best Clerkship ever!

2. Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Homework Group at Port Phillip Prison

Applications are now open for a challenging and rewarding new Castan Centre program, the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Homework Group at Port Phillip Prison.

The program will provide weekly tutoring and mentoring sessions for Indigenous men incarcerated at Port Phillip Prison, in Melbourne’s west. We are looking for tutors to participate in the program.

Tutors will receive a comprehensive induction and training program and be mentored and supervised throughout the program. They will also receive $25 per session to cover their transport costs (in the alternative we may use part of the stipend to provide transport).

3. CESAA European studies Essay Competition

Contemporary European Studies Association of Australia (CESAA) wishes to announce that the 23rd CESAA Essay Competition is now open for entries.

Essays from any discipline dealing with contemporary (post-war) Europe and/or the European Union can be submitted for consideration in one of the following two categories:

• Best essay by an undergraduate student (2,000-4,000 words)
• Best essay by an honours or postgraduate student (2,000 -5,000 words)

4. Connecting with Law Short Film Competition

The Connecting with Law Short Film Competition is launching again for 2016.

Open to all Australian law students, the Connecting with Law Short Film Competition is an opportunity for students to get creative, get their name known in law and be in the running to win great prizes.

This year, students are invited to create a 2-5 minute film about what inspires them to study law, that will educate, entertain and engage their fellow law students and help them connect with law.

5. theDELINEATOR: facilitated ideation sessions for startups

Lots of people don’t consider themselves entrepreneurs. But it sometimes just takes an ideation session and they have come up with a number of interesting startup concepts in just a few hours.

This is an empowering, exciting and fun event that is great for team building and professional development.

We plan to run sessions in small groups of 10-30 people.

10. Inaugural Michael Taussig QC Family Law Essay Awards

The Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia is pleased to invite law students to participate in the inaugural Michael Taussig QC Family Law Essay Awards.

The Awards commemorate the life and contribution of Michael Taussig QC, one of the Family Law Section’s most outstanding members.

The Family Law Section is the largest of the Law Council’s specialist sections. Since its inception in 1985, the Section has developed a reputation as a source of innovative, constructive and informed leadership in all areas of family law reform and policy development. With a national membership of more than 2,500 family lawyers and related professionals, the organisation is committing to furthering the development of practice in family law for the benefit of the Australian community.

Two Awards will be offered in 2016, one for junior lawyers and the second for law students.

The student Award is open to law students from all Australian Universities, with a prize value of $1,500.

11. International Students Work Rights Legal Service

A new International Students Work Rights Legal Service is now operating in Victoria.

JobWatch Inc, in collaboration with the Study Melbourne Student Centre and Inner Melbourne Community Legal, is operating this new legal service at the Study Melbourne Student Centre every Thursday.

Study Melbourne Student Centre (SMSC) is a free and confidential ‘one stop shop’ where international students in Victoria can access a range of free support, information and welfare services.

As part of the service, a JobWatch lawyer will be based at the Study Melbourne Student Centre each Thursday from 9.00am until 5.00pm to give international students free and confidential legal advice about work-related matters. JobWatch is also available to assist international students with work-related matters during the rest of the week.

Inner Melbourne Community Legal (IMCL) is available to assist international students with general law consultations (not including immigration advice). A lawyer from IMCL will be at the Study Melbourne Student Centre every Thursday afternoon.

The Study Melbourne Student Centre is located at 599 Little Bourke St, Melbourne (close to Southern Cross Station).

12. International Trade and Business Law Review – request for submissions

The Editorial Board of the International Trade and Business Law Review (‘the Review) are now inviting submissions for Volume XX of the Review.

The Review publishes leading articles consisting of original research, case notes, comments, and book reviews concerning international trade and business law, arbitration law and comparative law.

15. Summer Human Rights Institute in New York

The Summer Human Rights Institute (SHRI) is a 2-week certificate program that provides a comprehensive introduction to the theory and application of international human rights law, enabling individuals with limited time to gain an in-depth understanding of this critical field.

Participants take part in daily lectures and workshops with Fordham Law professors, as well as guest lecturers from New York’s prominent human rights community, and engage in up-close examination of real world legal aspects and tools of human rights law and practice.
