2. The Death Penalty in Asia: In the academy, in the court, in the street

Please join us at this event for an analysis of the current state of the death penalty in Asia, guided by experts from the field.

Over 20 countries globally continue to execute. Many of these countries are located in the Asian region (including China, Japan, Singapore, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Vietnam). The death penalty typically harms the very poor, and minority groups, including sexual minorities, foreigners and the intellectually impaired. Whilst globally the trend towards abolition over the past 70 years is strong, there is much work to be done in the Asian region.

The evening will feature:

  • Zainab Mahboob, Head of Legal at Justice Project Pakistan

Applications are now open for Leave No One Behind, a social business competition, reaching out to students and recent graduates for innovative ideas that address disadvantage in our local communities.

You’ll develop your capacity as a leader and build the skills to increase your impact.

How it works

Leave No One Behind will kick off with a Social Innovation Summit on Saturday 10 August 2019. The Summit is open to all students – not just those looking to enter the competition.

Following the Social Innovation Summit, you’ll form a team, and put together a business proposal. We’ll run a series of workshops, and you’ll finesse that proposal into a short, one-page business plan. We’ll hear your pitch, and award prize money to the best concept so you can bring your idea to life.

2. Jindal India Immersion Programme – January 2020

Monash Law students have the exciting opportunity to participate in the India Immersion Programme: An Introduction to Law, Business and Society in India. It will be held from 8 – 26 January 2020 at the O.P. Jindal Global University, India.

The India Immersion Programme will allow students to participate in seminars, lectures and field visits with leading academics and professionals from a variety of industries. The course provides its participants with an introduction to India’s diverse regulatory, business and social impact landscape.

The Programme is a valuable experience for Australian University Students studying Law, Business and/or Arts.

Applications are now open via Monash Abroad Portal and there is $3000 New Colombo Plan funding available to cover program costs for eligible students.

3. MinterEllison Beyond University Borders Competition

This competition is brought to you by MinterEllison and the Monash Law Ambassadors.

It is your opportunity to individually enter into the inter-varsity essay writing and public speaking competition by submitting a legal essay (no more than 3,000 words) on any and all commercial law areas.

If you make it to the finals you will be competing against other Victorian university candidates within the MinterEllison building on 31 July 2019.

4. Vice-Chancellor’s Ancora Imparo Leadership Program

Attention all first-year students. Applications for the 2020 Vice-Chancellor’s Ancora Imparo Leadership Program are now open.

This exclusive program will develop your leadership confidence and competence with its:

  • Friendly and talented cohort of 40 students representing all Monash faculties
  • Three-day, fully-funded residential at a coastal resort
  • Series of eight evening seminars with guest speakers from a wide range of fields and disciplines
  • Optional service learning projects; and

1. Textbook Equity Grants

Applications are now open for Semester 2 Textbook Equity Grants, provided in partnership with the Monash Bookstore and Law Faculty.

The grants are open to undergraduate and JD students, and can be used to purchase books at the Monash Bookstore (Clayton) or online, with free delivery to Monash Chambers. Postage charges apply for alternate delivery locations.

2. CHASS Australia Prizes

Nominations for the 2019 Council for the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (CHASS) Australia Prizes are now open.

The annual CHASS Australia Prizes are a great opportunity to showcase the excellent work being done in the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences in Australia.

Nominate yourself, your fellow students and others in your networks in any of the four prize categories:

  • Student: an essay, research or creative project in any Humanities, Arts or Social Sciences area – cash prize of $500 sponsored by CHASS
  • Future Leader: an individual under 30 demonstrating leadership skills and potential in the Humanities/Arts/Social Sciences – cash prize of $2,000 sponsored by Future Leaders
  • Distinctive Work: an artistic performance, exhibition, film, television show, play, composition, creative or research project, or practical contribution to HASS policy – cash prize of $3,500 sponsored by Routledge
  • Book: non-fiction – cash prize of $3,500 sponsored by Routledge

Nominations are open from anyone regardless of their years of training/study in the field, as long as the nominated work fits within the specified criteria. Please note there is no nomination fee for any category and self-nominations are welcome. The application process is very simple and can easily be completed online here.

2. Castan Centre for Human Rights Law Conference – Early bird offer ends today

The Castan Centre’s annual conference is coming up on Friday 26 July, featuring a line up of dynamic speakers on highly topical issues.

The student early bird ticket rate ($80) ends Friday 7 June.

Our first five confirmed 2019 conference speakers are accomplished and inspiring women.

  • Zainab Mahboob, our international keynote speaker, is Head of Legal at the Justice Project Pakistan. Zainab directs strategic litigation for clients with mental illness on death row.
  • Professor Rosemary Kayess‘ expertise in disability law was recognised in 2018 when she was appointed to the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
  • Nyadol Nyuon is a lawyer and activist who was awarded the Australian Human Rights Commission’s Racism. It Stops With Me Award for her advocacy on behalf of the Australian-African and Melbourne’s South Sudanese communities.
  • Shukufa Tahiri is a human rights activist and former refugee who was named by the Australian Financial Review as one of its 100 Women of Influence for 2018.
  • Kate Galloway is a nationally recognised academic with expertise in sustainability and gender equality. Her work includes a focus on human rights in the age of technology.
  • LGBTI and Constitutional Recognition panel, featuring Shannan DodsonAnna Brown andSarah Maddison.
