1. Progressive Law Network Subcommittee Applications 2017

In 2017, the PLN is looking to appoint subcommittees for the following portfolios:

The PLN is a network of lawyers, law students and community leaders working to promote social and environmental justice through the law. Broadly, the PLN engages members through its thought-provoking seminars and guest presentations.

We are also looking for expression of interest for potential policy projects and people to help with the 2017 conference.

3. Cork Online Law Review seeking submissions for the 16th Edition

The Cork Online Law Review at University College Cork, Ireland, is a non-profit Law Review which provides an opportunity for undergraduates and graduates alike to have their work published. The Cork Online Law Review (COLR) was revolutionary when established by law students who had the vision of forming Ireland’s only online law review to be run solely by law students. All articles are peer-reviewed by the UCC Faculty of Law.

COLR is internationally renowned, having been described by the New York University Law Faculty as ‘the leading online law review in Ireland,’ and can be viewed at http://corkonlinelawreview.com.

The Editorial Board of the Cork Online Law Review is currently seeking submissions for the 16th Edition which is due to be published online at http://corkonlinelawreview.com/index.php/category/editions/ and in hard copy in early March 2017. All submissions should be on a legal topic, and be between 3000 and 9000 words in length. Submissions are also welcome in Irish, and French. Book reviews and case notes will also be considered. We use the Oxford Style guide as our house style guide.

There is a medal for the overall best submission, with an accompanying cash prize of €300, as well as a medal for best non-English submission.

The closing date for submissions is 15th January 2017. All interested parties should submit their articles and enquiries to: editor@corkonlinelawreview.com.

5. Applications are invited for the position of Judicial Clerk to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, the Honourable T F Bathurst AC

The Chief Justice is currently seeking applicants for the position of Judicial Clerk (Tipstaff) for 2018.  The successful applicant is expected to continue on in 2019 as the Research Director to the Chief Justice.

We are pleased to announce that our special screening of Prison Songs will be preceded by a talk by Des Rogers. As a young man, Des spent time in a juvenile justice centre and then became the only person to escape from the Alice Springs Prison. He spent over four years in South Australia’s maximum security Yatala prison before returning to Alice Springs a rehabilitated man. He is now Director of Operations for Aboriginal Housing Victoria.

Prison Songs is a ground breaking documentary that gives voice to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are impacted by the criminal justice system.

Shot entirely behind bars, this funny yet achingly sad account of eventful lives is delivered via the musical performances of real people imprisoned in a Darwin jail.

The film features a number of male and female protagonists, each with their own story. Common themes emerge linking the tales – disadvantage, family violence, drugs and alcohol. While the music was written by Shellie Morris and Casey Bennetto – the award-winning composer of Keating: The Musical – the lyrics are the participants’ own words.

The stories portrayed in the film expose the real tragedy behind the lives of the people who are locked away from our view – the underlying poverty, disadvantage and discrimination faced by many Aboriginal communities and the lack of basic services and support systems available to them. The stories convey the inter-generational nature of trauma, grief and poverty. They give a human and vulnerable face to the problems that so many of us ignore – or are simply not aware of.

Prison Songs presents a unique opportunity to shift the conversation about reducing the over-imprisonment of Aboriginal people, through focusing on providing better supports and services that address the underlying reasons why people come into contact with the criminal justice system in the first place.

2. Independent Medical Examinations, Sick Leave and Return to Work: international perspectives

In this seminar, visiting researcher Associate Professor Silje Maeland will present recent research comparing sick leave decisions by GPs, insurance physicians and occupational physicians in several different countries (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, France, The Netherlands). She will also introduce work currently underway in Norway evaluating the impact of independent medical examinations on return to work, using an unusual RCT design.

1. Summer Unit: The Global Lawyer

Contemporary legal practice is no longer limited to the local. Lawyers now practice in a global context: across jurisdictions, in diverse cultural environments, and often mediated by digital technologies. Geography, legal systems and culture no longer constrain legal practice. Against this context this unit provides the foundation from which law graduates might take advantage of the increasing opportunities in global legal practice.

Through select readings, case studies, guest speakers, hands-on activities, discussion, and reflection, students will gain an understanding the challenges and opportunities presented by contemporary global legal practice. Students will explore the lawyer’s professional identity and global reach, through examining the impact of digital technologies, including social media, on legal practice. The unit will investigate the idea of legal practice that transgresses jurisdictional borders and help students develop the skills necessary for practice in diverse systems and cultures, and to interact appropriately and effectively with clients and lawyers in an increasingly networked world.

2. Some good news

Congratulations to Monash JD student Nina Vallins who won the Family Law Section of Law Council essay competition in memory of Michael Taussig QC.

Nina was encouraged and supported by Dr Adiva Sifris, and their success is a fine example of what can follow from Monash academics seeing opportunities for students arising out of academic interactions with students and helping them seize those opportunities. Well done to both Nina and Adiva.

1. URGENT: Volunteers needed for Advocacy assessment for ICC and the Jury skills workshop:

The Victorian Bar is looking for volunteers to play the role of a witness or a juror for the Advocacy Assessment component of our Indictable Crime Certificate (ICC) and for the Jury skills workshop.

The Advocacy Assessment dates are: November 8,10,15,17,22,24,29 from 9am-4.00pm

Venue: The Federal Court

The Jury skills workshop is scheduled for Saturday 12 November, from 8.30am-5.00pm. Lunch will be provided for this workshop.

You will be given a copy of the materials particularly a witness statement which summarises your evidence. You will need to be very familiar with the facts and be prepared to give your evidence and be cross examined or to play the role of a juror.
