1. Australian Singapore Law Students Society July Career Panel

The Australian Singapore Law Students Society have an exciting event coming up with July for members to get up close and personal with lawyers from KhattarWong, the Singapore Legal Service and the Attorney-General’s Chambers.*

They will share about their experiences in their relevant areas of practice. A Question and Answer session will be organised to clear any doubts. If you are the quieter type, the lawyers as well as HR reps from the firms will also be around to speak on issues about both practice and recruitment.

Refreshments will be provided and the event will take place at SMU.

2. Faculty Managed Internship: Skrine – Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Applications are now open and close Friday 17 August 2012. The internship is a minimum of 4 weeks from mid November to mid February.

1. Employment and Career Development Activities

2. King & Wood Mallesons Insight Program

What is Insight?
This program offers students a unique insight into our day-to-day operations and an opportunity to network with lawyers and partners.

Who should apply?
The program is aimed at law students who are not yet able to apply for a summer clerkship (i.e. 3rd year or equivalent). If you are eligible for a clerkship this year but are unable to participate (e.g. overseas exchange) and would like to participate in Insight or discuss alternative clerkship options, please contact us.

What will I do in Insight?
The program consists of 4 sessions at our offices in Bourke Place.

8 August 2012 – The Global Legal Market
This session will give you an introduction into what’s happening in the changing Global Legal Market and what impact it has on graduates.

12 September 2012 – Legal Practice at King & Wood Mallesons
This session will give you a high level overview of how our firm is structured, what areas of law we practise and the type of clients we work with.

5 December 2012 – Skills Based Session
The skills based session will provide you with practical skills to assist you now and in your legal career.

April/May 2013 – Shadow a Lawyer
What is it really like to work in commercial law? By spending time with one of our lawyers you will gain a real insight into the type of work we do.

1. 6th Annual Castan Centre Human Rights Moot

The Castan Centre for Human Rights Law is hosting the sixth annual human rights moot competition, which is open to law (JD/LLB) students at all Victorian universities. The competition will address issues associated with the Victorian human rights legislation and will give students the opportunity to hone their skills in this important area of law. The event is proudly sponsored by Clayton Utz, who is providing generous prizes:

  • $3000 to the winning team
  • $1000 to the runners-up

Competitors must be in the equivalent of at least third year of a combined law degree, or in any stage of a JD degree, but must not have completed their degree. It is preferable that competitors have completed some studies in human rights law.

1. ANU Graduate Law Conference

The ANU College of Law invites graduate research students Australia-wide to attend the eighth National Graduate Law Conference 2012. The 2012 conference will enable Higher Degree Research students to present papers in a range of legal research disciplines including: public law, private law, criminal law, international law, regulation and law, and legal theory. Alternatively, students may also come as an attendee to participate in discussions about the presentations from students and some invited guest speakers. Students are encouraged to present work-in-progress papers related to their doctoral research.

1. Seeking Open Day Volunteers

Monash University Open Day for Clayton is on Sunday 5 August, 2012. We are looking for student volunteers to assist on the day.

This will involve speaking with prospective students and their families about your experience of studying at at Monash, giving directions as well as helping out with the set up and pack up of the equipment used on the day.

Although these positions are voluntary roles, the faculty does provide training and $50 vouchers for students who volunteer half a day (9.00am – 1.00pm OR 12.30pm – 4.30pm) and $95 vouchers for students who volunteer for a whole day (9.00am – 4.30pm)

If you have good communication skills, and a well rounded knowledge of the faculty and campus please email lauren.miller@monash.edu by Monday 2 July, 2012.

In your email please include the following information:

  • Full name and contact number
  • Degree type and year
  • Availability

1. Your Participation in the MULC Online Survey is Invited!

The Faculty of Law is keen to ensure that your experience in our postgraduate programs is a high-quality one. Now that our new facility has been open for a year, we are interested in your feedback, and invite you to complete an online survey, located here.

The more participants we have, the more we can rely on the information that we receive, so please participate in this survey. It should take no longer than ten minutes to complete.

The closing date will be Friday 6 July. Participants who choose to provide their student number can go into the draw to win a Village Cinemas Gold Class double pass. Your responses are confidential. Please see the privacy statement at the end of the survey.

1. Applications for Copy of Exam Script

Results for Semester 1, 2012 will be released on Monday the 9th of July, 2012. You will then be able to apply to get a copy of your exam script, if you wish. Applications will open on the same day as results are released and will close on Friday the 10th of August, 2012.

The application form will be available once results are released and can be picked up from the Law Student Services counter or downloaded from the website.

There is a $5 charge per exam and we are only able to accept payment in cash.

The application deadline is listed on the form, it will be approximately three weeks after the release of results. Please be aware that NO LATE APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED. If you miss the cut-off date and wish to get a copy of your exam you will need to follow the Freedom of Information procedures which can be found here.

2. Susan Campbell Memorial Dinner: Celebrating Clinical Legal Education at Monash

Susan Campbell AM (1943-2011) was a pioneer of community legal centres. Through her work, she inspired a generation of law students to give back to their communities. This event celebrates Susan’s professional life and her work with the Monash Clinical Legal Education program.
