2. International Bar Association (IBA) Student Membership Scheme

The IBA, established in 1947, is the world’s leading organisation of international legal practitioners, bar associations and law societies. The IBA influences the development of international law reform and shapes the future of the legal profession throughout the world, whilst providing its members with unique international networking and professional development opportunities.

Through our new student membership initiative the IBA aims to enhance the study of law, by giving students access to the extensive range of academic and professional materials produced by the IBA – resources which are only available to IBA members. As well as some content specifically for students, such as opportunities to have work published, and competitions; all for the nominal charge of £20 ($27).

Additionally IBA membership covers a broad range of international legal practitioners, providing students with the opportunity to familiarise themselves with future employers. 1. Unit and Teacher Evaluation Summer Semester Units 2010 – 2011

Some of the Summer Semester 2010 – 2011 Units are being evaluated online as part of the University’s trial of SETU – Student Evaluation of Teachers and Units.

These surveys will close off on 2nd March so please make sure that you completed the online SETU surveys before then. You can access the surveys via your my.monash portal.   We really do want know what you thought about your Units and of course if you have any suggestions as to how we can improve them even further. By providing us with feedback about your Units you help us to keep improving our Units and to give you the best possible learning experience that we can. We do value your constructive comments and suggestions for improvement and take these on board when redesigning our Units for the next offering. The performance of our Units each Semester is closely monitored and reported to the Dean and to the Faculty Executive Committee.

1. Case Law Seminar

This class is being offered in weeks 5 and 6 outside lecture times and will focus on how to search for cases online and how to prepare a case note.  Bring a laptop connected to the Monash wireless network, if you have one, as we will be working through the exercises in groups.  Check venue when booking through the Library class booking system

2. Court Report Classes

This class is designed to assist you to complete your Court Report assignment.  Classes have been scheduled in weeks 3 and 4, outside lecture times.  Book through the Library class booking system

3. First Year Students

4. Navigating the Law Library

Tours of the Law Library will be offered in O week and week 1.  A guided tour will get you off to a flying start and help you to identify and locate essential resources.  This 45 minute session includes locating cases as required in the LAW1101 Introduction to Legal Reasoning (ILR) Finding Cases Exercise.  No bookings required.

1. Census Date for Master of Laws (Juris Doctor) Compulsory Units in Trimester 1 2011

The census date for Master of Laws (Juris Doctor) compulsory units in Trimester 1 2011 is Tuesday 15 February 2011.

If a student discontinues a unit before the census date, student will receive ‘Withdrawn no-load’ for the unit, which means:

  • Financial – No financial penalty
  • Academic – Recorded on transcript as ‘WD’

If a student discontinues a unit AFTER the census date but before the withdrawn fail date, student will have ‘Withdrawn late’, which means 100% of fees retained and withdrawn will be recorded on transcript.

Reminder: A student may not withdraw from a unit after the last day of teaching.

2. Changing Your Enrolment (Coursework students only)

Most students will be able to change their 2011 enrolment via WES from January through to mid-March. If you cannot make enrolment changes on the WES, you should submit an enrolment amendment form with your faculty. Forms can be obtained from any Student Service Centre counter and from your Faculty Student Services Office.

Please note that students should not book any study leave during the examination period. Detailed examination timetable for Trimester 1 2011 will be published online by Friday 18 February, 2011.

Postgraduate law students are invited to contact Rosemary Shaw – Learning Skills Adviser – to arrange a consultation to discuss their assessment tasks and law studies in general. A number of classes are also offered at the Law Chambers.

5. Monash Email Accounts (All students)

The University only sends emails to your official Monash student email account. You must access your Monash email account on a regular basis. If you choose not to check your Monash email account, you will miss important items of information including the notification of your fee assessment.

2. Seeking a Volunteer – CBD Location

A sole practitioner firm with a small general practice in the Melbourne CBD, doing approximately 75% Family Law, is seeking a volunteer for 2-3 days per week.

Our past volunteers are completing/have completed post graduate courses in law allowing them to be admitted to practice.  One graduate who completed 75 days supervision in order to be admitted worked at this office approximately 3 days a week in order to comply with PLT course requirements.  He was then admitted to practice and obtained employment at a middle tier CBD firm.

The work required combines some law work with general office duties and would suit a self starter who is able to work alone.  The successful applicant will enjoy a great deal of experience in the day to day work of a sole practitioner.

Expressions of interest are invited from law graduates and those undertaking their final year of the LLB.

1. Conciliation Versus Mediation Practice in Workplace Disputes

On Thursday 17 February, the Victorian Association for Dispute Resolution (VADR) will be hosting a presentation to be given by Anna Lee Cribb, Commissioner of Fair Work Australia, on the topic, “Conciliation versus mediation practice in workplace disputes”.

2. New System for Unit Evaluation for 2011

The University has decided that with effect from Semester 1 in 2011 all Unit evaluations will now be automatically administered online each Semester together with a new section which asks you to also evaluate the Teaching in your Units. This new system is called SETU (Student Evaluation of Teachers and Units) and you will be able to access the SETU  surveys via your portal. These surveys are confidential and any data viewed by Faculty staff will be aggregated and de- identified. Participation in the SETU surveys is voluntary but we would really encourage you to complete a SETU survey for each Unit in which you are enrolled every Semester as we really do want know what you thought about your Units and of course if you have any suggestions as to how we can improve them even further.
