1. Commercial CPD Seminar

The introduction of the Civil Procedure Act 2010 (Vic) has been an important development in Victorian legal practice.

This Seminar explores two issues brought squarely into focus by the legislation.First, the increasing prospect of costs orders being made against practitioners. Second, the ethical issues raised for practitioners in matters where one party is a self represented litigant.

2. Great Law Week Debate – “Free Speech Isn’t Free Enough in Australia”

Witness a team of prominent Monash Law Alumni battle it out with current Monash Law Students, over this highly controversial topic at the annual Great Law Week Debate.

2011 World Universities Debating Championship winner and Senior Policy Officer for the Department of Premier and Cabinet, Fiona Prowse (BA/LLB 2012), will lead the alumni team to argue “Free speech isn’t free enough in Australia”, supported by well renowned barrister Shivani Pillai (BA/LLB) and Kylie Lane (BEc(Hons), LLB(Hons), DipLang (Japanese) 2005) a highly regarded Senior Associate at Ashurst.

Proving this point won’t be easy against the Monash Law students’ team consisting of Duncan Wallace (Law/Arts) former winner of the Monash Senior Moot and Monash Junior Moot and a semi-finalist of the AAT Moot, Beatrice Paull (Law/Arts) a recent Octofinalist at 2013 Australian Novice Intervarsity Debating Championships and Sam Myers (Law/Arts) a semi-finalist in the 2012 Junior Moot, and winner in 2013.

Overseeing the Great Law Week Debate as moderator is current Monash Law student David Jancik (Law/Arts(Hons)), who currently works as a Legal and Business analyst a Piper Capital.

3. Get Active Week

To offset the negativity with the onset of cold weather, Federal government announcements and the ongoing construction in the Law building, staff and students are encouraged to lift their spirits and become involved in the university’s Get Active Campaign being held 6-12 May 2013. Please see details below:

  • The Get Active Campaign is all about;
  • Getting Out of the office and into some fresh air and sunshine,
  • Getting Involved in some good old fashioned community togetherness,
  • Having Fun- goodness knows we all need some of that at the moment- and;
  • Getting Active- which will help us feel better all round.

The first ‘Get Active Week’ Campaign across Monash University is being held 6th and 12th May 2013. The themes of the week are to Get Out, Get Involved, Have Fun and to Get Active.

Monash Sport will be hosting a number of special events across Berwick, Caulfield, Clayton, Gippsland, Parkville and Peninsula campuses, as well as making a number of existing service offerings free of charge for Monash students and staff members. All activities are free to get involved in but what’s needed is for as many students and staff to join in the Fun! It would be great if as many people from the Law Faculty got out and got active!

Some of the marquee events happening during the week include:

  • BBQ & Sporting Challenges – Join us for lunch on the Menzies lawn Tuesday 7 May from 12:30pm and take part in sporting challenges
  • Menzies Stair Climb – Challenge yourself on the stairs! From 1pm on Thursday 9 May we’ll be taking the stairs to the top of the Menzies Building and want you to join us!
  • Campus walks – Stretch your legs in your lunch breaks! Campus walks will be taking place at all campuses throughout the week.
  • Mother’s Day Classic – Get Active Week will culminate on Sunday 12 May, with TeamMONASH participating in this annual event in support of the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Participate with friends, family, and as a part of the Monash University community!

4. World Red Cross Day Forum

Are you interested in International Humanitarian Law, Crisis Relief or volunteering with the Red Cross? Wednesday 8th May celebrates World Red Cross Day – a day to recognise the efforts of both staff and volunteers at an international and local level. The Red Cross Victorian Youth Advisory Committee are hosting a free public forum, with speakers presenting on the theme of ‘Everyday Acts of Humanity’. There will be presentations from international humanitarian law, international disaster relief and local volunteering teams, as well as the opportunity to find out about how to become involved in the Red Cross movement.

1. Semester 1 SETU surveys

We are very concerned that the student response rates on our SETU surveys are falling –

  • 2012 Semester 3 – Faculty 24.48% and University 32.04%
  • 2012 Semester 2 – Faculty 23.80% and University 30.49%
  • 2012 Semester 1 – Faculty 34.77 % and University 38.63%

The University will send you reminder emails about the SETU surveys each Semester – please don’t delete these emails or just dismiss them as junk. You can access the SETU surveys via your my.monash portal and obviously there will be a survey for each Unit you are enrolled in. Your feedback about your Units and Teachers is important to us and we do appreciate you completing the SETU surveys.

The S1 survey periods open as follows

  • S1, S1-32 and SS-S1-01 Units (UG and some PG Units – including LLM Units) – the SETU survey opens on 6 May and shuts down on 24 May
  • T2-57 Units (LLM and Prato Units) – the SETU survey opens on 29 April and shuts down on 30 May.

We would really appreciate it if you could please complete a SETU survey for each Unit in which you are enrolled before the closing date.

2. Vice-Chancellor’s 2014 Ancora Imparo Student Leadership Program

Leadership training helps to unlock your potential – enhancing your ability to have a positive influence on your peers and on the world.

Applications for positions in the Vice-Chancellor’s 2014 Ancora Imparo Student Leadership Program will open on Tuesday 7th May 2013. The Ancora Imparo Program is a flagship program of the University.

We seek participation in the 2014 Program of students from a diverse range of backgrounds, interests and courses, who wish to improve their community. If you are a first year student who has a vision for constructive change in society, then I encourage you to apply. Even if this is not for you but you know another first year who demonstrates a desire to make a difference, then please encourage them to apply.

Participants are given the opportunity to meet and hear from some of the nation’s most inspired leaders, with backgrounds ranging from politics to business, arts and the law. To illustrate, speakers have included Christine Nixon APM, Julian Burnside QC AO, and CEOs of non-profit organisations such as Jack Manning Bancroft (AIME) and Dr Sam Prince (One Disease at a Time).

1. Have Your say – Library User Survey

The Library is conducting a user survey from April 29 to May 12, 2013,  giving staff and students the opportunity to provide feedback about the Library and its services and resources.  The survey, which is run every second year, is an important tool in assisting the Library to identify areas for improvement as well as ways we can more effectively partner with you in your learning.
We would very much welcome your views and feedback and encourage you to take part.  The survey should take about 10 minutes to complete.

1. Tour the Law Collection at the State Library of Victoria

Discover the huge range of law resources available. The State Library of Victoria has the largest publicly available law collections in Victoria. Established by Sir Redmond Barry, the collection is rich in historic depth and maintains up to date collections of legislation, law reports, journals and text books.

Join a tour of the collection (1hr) followed by a session exploring the electronic legal resources available both in the library and from home (45min). Stay for one or both sessions.
