Kimberley Brownlee an Associate Professor of Legal and Moral Philosophy at the University of Warwick. Prior to this, she was a Lecturer and Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester. Her work focuses on conscience, conviction, civil disobedience, the ethics of sociability, ideals, virtue, practical reason, and human rights. Kimberley holds a BA (First Class Hons.) in Philosophy from McGill University, an MPhil in Philosophy from Cambridge, and a DPhil in Philosophy from Oxford (Rhodes Scholar).

Professor Frank Bloch Frank S Bloch is Professor of Law Emeritus at Vanderbilt University Law School in Nashville, Tennessee, where he served as Director of Clinical Education and as Director of the Social Justice Program. Currently he serves as Executive Secretary of the Global Alliance for Justice Education (GAJE). Professor Bloch is an internationally prominent expert on legal aid and clinical legal education, as well as social security, disability, and other public benefit programs. He is the author or editor of nine books and has published over 35 articles and book chapters, focusing most recently on the global movement in clinical legal education. He was a Fulbright Professor at Delhi University and has served as a consultant to the International Social Security Association, the Administrative Conference of the United States, the Social Security Advisory Board, and the US Agency for International Development. Before joining the faculty at Vanderbilt, he taught at the University of Chicago Law School and practised law with California Rural Legal Assistance. Professor Bloch is a member of the National Academy of Social Insurance. He holds a BA and a PhD (Politics) from Brandeis University and a JD from Columbia University Law School.

Gavin Phillipson has held a Chair in Law at the University of Durham since January 2007 and is a qualified solicitor. His research interests lie in the fields of European and UK human rights law, especially freedom of expression and the interface of those fields with public law and constitutional and political theory. He has written widely in these areas in top UK, US and Canadian journals, including the Modern Law Review, Law Quarterly Review, Current Legal Problems, Cambridge Law Journal, Public Law, McGill Law Journal and Law & Contemporary Problems.

1. 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner

This year marks the 50th anniversary of our first intake of students. In March 1964, 150 students arrived at what was then a muddy and less-developed Clayton campus, eager to begin their studies at Victoria’s new Law School.

We have come a long way since those early days. We will celebrate this milestone at a gala dinner in June.

With alumnus, popular ABC Radio host Jon Faine as our Master of Ceremonies, a special welcome from alumna the Hon. Chief Justice Marilyn Warren AC, and the launch of our faculty history by the Hon. Chief Justice Robert French AC – the event is sure to be a night to remember.

2. Connecting with Law Short Film Competition

The Oxford University Press Connecting with Law Short Film Competition is launching again in 2014.

To enter, students are asked to create a 2 – 5 minute film around legal ethics to educate, entertain and engage other law students.

The winners will be those judged to be the most creative, instructive and original, that helps other students to connect with the study of law.

The winners will receive:
1st prize $1500
2nd prize $500
3rd prize $250

3. Exciting New Volunteer Opportunity

Beginning in July 2014, Monash Oakleigh Legal Service (MOLS) and the Family Law Assistance Program (FLAP) will be piloting a new volunteer service providing Family Law advice on a Tuesday evening.

MOLS and FLAP are seeking up to 10 new volunteers who would like to be involved in the new program. Students will be responsible for interviewing clients, conducting research, developing practical legal skills, consulting with supervising lawyers and advising clients. Volunteers will be rostered on a fortnightly basis for a minimum 6 month commitment.

We are seeking volunteers who have undertaken a Family Law unit or can demonstrate an interest in Family Law through work experience/volunteering or employment.

4. Governor-General’s Prize

The Governor-General’s Prize is now in its tenth year, and, in addition to awarding over $10,000 in prize money each year, it has earned a reputation as the most prestigious essay competition in Australia.

Every year, the judging panel for the Prize has been chaired by a Justice of the High Court of Australia, and it is a feature of participation in the final round that undergraduates have the opportunity to be interviewed by one of the Justices.

This year, the Prize has been sponsored by Reconciliation Australia, and all of the essay questions are focussed on issues relating to constitutional recognition of Indigenous Australians. The questions, and further details, including past entries, may be found on the website.

Students wishing to enter the Prize are required to submit a 2,500 word essay online by Monday 30 June, 2014.

All finalists will be invited to a cocktail reception at the High Court of Australia in Canberra, with the Justices of the Court and other special guests to celebrate the tenth year of the Prize.

5. Law Building Foyer Renovations

Students are advised that the rear foyer of the Law Building at Clayton will be inaccessible from Friday 4 April until Thursday 1 May, 2014 for renovations.  Access will remain to L3 via the corridors closest to the room.

6. New Email Account for Student Grievances

Please ensure that you have tried to resolve any issues you may have experienced, with the appropriate lecturer, Chief Examiner or Director of the course, before submitting a grievance.

7. Rant Against Racism Competition

Have you stood up against racism? Then maybe you’d like to enter the Rant Against Racism competition sponsored by the Australian Human Rights Commission in partnership with the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human rights Commission.

By providing an example of how you stood up to racist behaviour with wit, humour, anger or just by quietly making your point, you could win a $100 JB HiFi voucher

9. Scholarship to Study in Israel

The William Kaye Memorial Study in Israel Scholarship 2014

A scholarship fund has been established in the memory of the late Hon. William Kaye AO, a long-standing member of the Leo Baeck Centre, to assist people to study in and develop their relationship with Israel.  It is particularly intended to assist those who would otherwise struggle to fund such a study visit.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Must be a resident in Australia or New Zealand.
  • Must plan to undertake a study program in Israel for 16 days or more, of which at least half must be on a formal study course.
  • The course and its institution must be open, just and equitable to students and must not denigrate any group or approach to Judaism.

The total annual sum is usually $6000 and it is expected that the award amounts may be between $2000 and $3000.

Applications are now open and close on Wednesday 30 April, 2014. Please request an application form from office@LBC.org.au with further information.

5. One World Festival

Monash celebrates its cultural diversity in week 6 with One World Festival. The festival will be held on the Lemon Scented Lawns at Clayton campus from Monday 7 to Wednesday 9 April, between 11am and 4pm.

5. Mooting and Advocacy Competition LAW4248

Call for Applications:

For the first time in 2014, we are offering a unit designed to give intensive training in advocacy skills, including legal research and drafting techniques, as well as oral argument. This will culminate in a moot court or other advocacy-based competition, in which students will compete on behalf of Monash against teams from other universities.

Every student chosen for this unit will be allocated to a particular competition. Some of these will be held in Melbourne, others interstate and possibly a few overseas. For those students who need to travel for their competition, the airfares and accommodation costs will be covered by the Faculty.

The exact competitions may vary, depending on the subject knowledge of the students enrolled, the dates of the various competitions and other factors.

How to Apply:

Every student will be part of a mooting team as such, places in this unit are strictly limited. Students will be chosen in a competitive application process.

Applications need to be submitted to the Chief Examiner of the unit, Associate Professor Adam McBeth, at adam.mcbeth@monash.edu by 12 noon, Monday 14 April. The application form is available at the resources webpage.

Applications are open to all students currently in their second or subsequent year of their law degree. Preference will generally be given to later year students, although it is expected that some places will be offered to students earlier in their degree.

Criteria for selection will include course progression, marks in completed units, experience or skill in mooting, debating or other advocacy. Shortlisted candidates may be asked to make a brief presentation to assist in selecting the final group.
