1. ACJI Free Public Lecture: How a Commitment to Fairness Might Just Save the Courts

For the first time, Monash’ Australian Centre for Justice Innovation (ACJI) welcomes Judge Kevin Burke, one of the most recognised leaders within the American judiciary.  Following on from insights shared in his thought-provoking article ‘A Vision for Enhancing Public Confidence in the Judiciary: Commit to Fairness in Court’ (2012) 95(6) Judicature 251–254, Judge Burke will present his reflections on why it is ‘time for courts to commit to procedural fairness’. Find out why ‘[c]ourts must be willing to innovate if they are to effectively address the popular dissatisfaction with the administration of justice.’

Judge Kevin Burke is a Minnesota District Court Judge, past Board member of the National Center for State Courts, and past President of the American Judges Association, who will share his thoughts regarding commitment to fairness in court.

2. The Great Law Week Debate – “The more laws, the less justice” (Cicero)

As part of Monash Law Faculty’s 50th Anniversary celebrations the Annual Great Law Week Debate will see a team of prominent Monash Law Alumni battle it out with current Monash Law Staff, over the highly controversial topic “The more laws, the less justice”(Cicero)

1. 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner

Join us at our 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner

Reminisce with friends. Catch up with your former teachers and faculty staff.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of our first intake of students. In March 1964, 150 students arrived at what was then a muddy and less-developed Clayton campus, eager to begin their studies at Victoria’s new Law School.

We have come a long way since those early days. We will celebrate this milestone at a gala dinner in June.

With alumnus, popular ABC Radio host Jon Faine as our Master of Ceremonies, a special welcome from alumna the Hon. Chief Justice Marilyn Warren AC, and the launch of our faculty history by the Hon. Chief Justice Robert French AC – the event is sure to be a night to remember.

2. Exciting New Volunteer Opportunity

Beginning in July 2014, Monash Oakleigh Legal Service (MOLS) and the Family Law Assistance Program (FLAP) will be piloting a new volunteer service providing Family Law advice on a Tuesday evening.

MOLS and FLAP are seeking up to 10 new volunteers who would like to be involved in the new program. Students will be responsible for interviewing clients, conducting research, developing practical legal skills, consulting with supervising lawyers and advising clients. Volunteers will be rostered on a fortnightly basis for a minimum 6 month commitment.

We are seeking volunteers who have undertaken a Family Law unit or can demonstrate an interest in Family Law through work experience/volunteering or employment.

3. Governor-General’s Prize

The Governor-General’s Prize is now in its tenth year, and, in addition to awarding over $10,000 in prize money each year, it has earned a reputation as the most prestigious essay competition in Australia.

Every year, the judging panel for the Prize has been chaired by a Justice of the High Court of Australia, and it is a feature of participation in the final round that undergraduates have the opportunity to be interviewed by one of the Justices.

This year, the Prize has been sponsored by Reconciliation Australia, and all of the essay questions are focussed on issues relating to constitutional recognition of Indigenous Australians. The questions, and further details, including past entries, may be found on the website.

Students wishing to enter the Prize are required to submit a 2,500 word essay online by Monday 30 June, 2014.

All finalists will be invited to a cocktail reception at the High Court of Australia in Canberra, with the Justices of the Court and other special guests to celebrate the tenth year of the Prize.

4. Information Session on Prestigious Scholarships

On Friday 23 May, 2014 there will be an information session on various prestigious scholarship opportunities for 2015.

5. International Conference of Undergraduate Research

The second annual International Conference of Undergraduate Research will be held on Tuesday September 23, 2014 at seven institutions across the globe from Melbourne to New York, Coventry to Singapore connected by video-conferencing. This is an opportunity for undergraduate students (including Honours candidates) to present their research on the world stage to peers across the globe.

Why should I apply?

  • Two stipends will be available on a competitive basis for Monash students to travel to present at Warwick University.
  • The Academic Vice President’s Award will be given to the best papers by Honours students with a value of $300.
  • Non Honours students will also be eligible for a best spoken paper prize of $250 and $200 for the best poster.
  • Possibility to publish research in Reinvention, the Monash-Warwick Journal of Undergraduate Research.

How do I apply?

  • Submit a 250 word abstract at icurportal.com;
  • If applying for the stipend, add a 500 personal statement at the submission page and your academic transcript (WES copy is fine);

6. Law Week 2014 – Courts Open Day

As part of Law Week, courts and tribunals in Melbourne will open their doors to the community on Courts Open Day on Saturday 17 May for a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes of the Victorian legal system. The Supreme, County and Magistrates’ Courts will be open for guided tours, discussions and mock hearings, while the Coroners Court will hold a special exhibition on the collapse of the West Gate Bridge and VCAT will provide tips on how to prepare for a hearing.

7. Victorian Bar Mediation Course

The Victorian Bar Accredited Lawyers Mediation Course is running this year in June and November.

There is a special discount for students, who will receive the $2500 rate for the course.

6. S1 2014 SETU Surveys

The S1 SETU surveys are still going as follows:

  • UG Units in Teaching period S1- SETU survey opens on Sunday 11 May and closes on Sunday 1 June
  • LLM Units in Teaching period T2-57 – SETU survey opens on Monday 28 April and closes on Monday 12 May
  • Prato Units in Teaching period T2-57 – SETU survey opens on Tuesday 27 June and closes on Sunday 18 July.

We would really appreciate it if you could please complete a SETU survey for each Unit in which you are enrolled as we do value your feedback about our Units and do use this feedback to help fine tune and improve our Units.
