1. Attention: Open Day Volunteers Sought

Monash University’s Open Day for Clayton will be held on Sunday 3 August, 2014. We are seeking student volunteers to assist on the day.

This will involve speaking with prospective students and their families about your experience of studying at Monash, giving directions as well as helping out with the set up and pack up of the equipment used on the day.

Although these positions are voluntary roles, the faculty does provide training and $50 vouchers for students who volunteer half a day (9.00am – 1.00pm OR 12.30pm – 4.30pm) and $90 vouchers for students who volunteer for a whole day (9.00am – 4.30pm)

If you have good communication skills, and a well-rounded knowledge of the faculty and campus please email gerard.ladiges@monash.edu by Monday 7 July, 2014.

In your email please include the following information:

  • Full name and contact number
  • Degree type and year of study
  • Availability
    • Half Day (morning: 9.00am – 1.00pm)
    • Half Day (afternoon: 12.30pm – 4.30pm)
    • Full day (9.00am – 4.30pm)
  • Method of entry into law (e.g. Straight from year 12, internal or external transfer)
  • If you have previously volunteered for Monash Law on Open Day

2. Brain Management

Protect your most important organ

Mindfulness is an attention training practice that has been shown to reduce stress, increase performance and improve wellbeing.

This program consists of three weekly sessions of 60 minutes each.

You will learn how to practice mindfulness and to apply it to:

  • Reduce stress and anxiety
  • Improve the performance of your brain
  • Work with difficult thoughts and emotions
  • Communicate more effectively

Brain Management provides the ideal opportunity to de-stress after exams, and get a clear mind before the start of semester 2.

The program offered in July at both Clayton and Caulfield.

3. Law Malaysia Program 2014

Studying at the Monash University Malaysia Campus in Kuala Lumpur allows you to immerse you in the multicultural life of Malaysia while studying a range of comparative and international law subjects. Make use of your winter break and enrol in semi-intensive units held in small classes in state-of-the-art facilities. You will enjoy a unique study experience with students from international and local partner universities

LAW4484 Malaysian and Singaporean constitutional systems

Learn more about:

  • the dynamics of the interaction between the constitutional framework and the struggles for political power in Malaysia and Singapore, with emphasis on current political developments in Malaysia;
  • Contemporary problems relating to fundamental liberties, such as the constitutional implications of the ‘Islamisation phenomenon’, the impact on constitutionalism of sedition prosecutions, ‘reforms’ to the Internal Security Act (ISA) and new legislation pertaining to the right of assembly and association;
  • Critical analyses of the powers and functioning of various institutions: the Judiciary, the Executive, the Conference of Rulers and the Parliament.

BTW2320 Current issues in corporate governance

The unit will explore current corporate governance issues in Malaysia and selected Asian developing countries and will involve a comparative study of how developed jurisdictions (Australia, UK, US and Singapore) have resolved these issues. The focus is on issues the role of the board of directors, auditors, shareholders and whistleblowers. The unit will highlight problems and resolutions to improve corporate governance in Malaysia.

Undergradaute students who enrol in these units in Malaysia can return to Clayton and enrol in intensive units LAW4104 Australian banking law (starts Monday 25 August, 2014) and LAW5125 Lawyers ethics and society (starts Monday 8 September, 2014)

4. Monash Law Faculty’s 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner

Join us at our 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner

Reminisce with friends. Catch up with your former teachers and faculty staff.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of our first intake of students. In March 1964, 150 students arrived at what was then a muddy and less-developed Clayton campus, eager to begin their studies at Victoria’s new Law School.

We have come a long way since those early days. We will celebrate this milestone at a gala dinner in June.

With alumnus, popular ABC Radio host Jon Faine as our Master of Ceremonies, a special welcome from alumna the Hon. Chief Justice Marilyn Warren AC, and the launch of our faculty history by the Hon. Chief Justice Robert French AC – the event is sure to be a night to remember.

Time: 6.30pm – 11.30pm
Date: Saturday 28 June, 2014
Venue: Savoy Ballroom, Grand Hyatt Melbourne, 123 Collins Street, Melbourne

5. Residential Accommodation Project

Please read the information on the Monash website regarding new student accommodation on Clayton Campus.

The Union Loop Road will be closed from Tuesday 10 June, 2014.

Access to C2 Carpark (opposite Sport & Rec) will be closed from the Union Loop Road but alternate access/egress will be operational from the south side of the car park.

Access to C11 Car Park (gravel) will be closed from the Union Loop Road but an alternate access/egress will be operational from Ring Road East.

Footpaths on the ringroad will be delineated with bollards and appropriate signage.

2. Governor-General’s Prize

The Governor-General’s Prize is now in its tenth year, and, in addition to awarding over $10,000 in prize money each year, it has earned a reputation as the most prestigious essay competition in Australia.

Every year, the judging panel for the Prize has been chaired by a Justice of the High Court of Australia, and it is a feature of participation in the final round that undergraduates have the opportunity to be interviewed by one of the Justices.

This year, the Prize has been sponsored by Reconciliation Australia, and all of the essay questions are focussed on issues relating to constitutional recognition of Indigenous Australians. The questions, and further details, including past entries, may be found on the website.

Students wishing to enter the Prize are required to submit a 2,500 word essay online by Monday 30 June, 2014.

All finalists will be invited to a cocktail reception at the High Court of Australia in Canberra, with the Justices of the Court and other special guests to celebrate the tenth year of the Prize.

4. S1 2014 SETU Surveys

The S1 SETU surveys are still going as follows:

Please note that the closing date for the S1 SETU surveys for UG Units has now been extended to Sunday 8 June.

  • UG Units in Teaching period S1- SETU survey opens on Sunday 11 May and closes on Sunday 8 June
  • UG and PG Prato Units in Teaching period T2-57 – SETU survey opens on Tuesday 27 June and closes on Sunday 18 July.

We would really appreciate it if you could please complete a SETU survey for each Unit in which you are enrolled as we do value your feedback about our Units and do use this feedback to help fine tune and improve our Units.
