1. Peter Greste to Speak at The Annual Castan Centre Conference

Journalist Peter Greste, who spent over a year in an Egyptian prison with Al Jazeera colleagues, is a late addition to the line up for the Castan Centre’s annual conference.

2. The College of Law Open Night

The College of Law Victoria is holding its annual Information Night on Wednesday 15 July 2015 from 4:30pm – 7:30pm.

3. VADR CPD Event: Robert Wright: Disputes Arising in Not-for-Profit Associations

This is an invitation to attend a VADR CPD presentation where solicitor Robert Wright will speak on the topic: ‘Disputes Arising in Not-for-Profit Associations’.

Robert Wright is a Victorian solicitor with 40 years’ experience in associations law, who has acted for associations in all Australian jurisdictions.

He will be speaking about the types of disputes that can arise in not-for-profit associations, the personalities involved, and how such disputes can best be resolved without damage to the association.

Date: Thursday, 23 July 2015

Time: 5.45pm for 6.15pm to 7.15pm (presentation)

Venue: Coopers Inn (2nd floor), cnr Exhibition & Little Lonsdale Sts, Melbourne

Cost: Free to VADR members, $20 non-members.

1. Nygh Internship Postgraduate students

The Australian Institute of International Affairs and the Australian Branch of the International Law Association call for applications for the 2016 Peter Nygh Hague Conference Internship.

Each year, the internship provides a graduate or post graduate student with the rare opportunity to travel to The Hague in the Netherlands and work in the area of Private International Law. Prospective applicants should visit the AIIA’s website.

Successful applicants receive a contribution towards their living expenses for the duration of the internship.

2. Vis Moot Ad 2015-16

Annual Willem C Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot

Formal applications for students interested in the Willem C Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot for 2015/16 held in Hong Kong and Vienna next March and April are now open.

Participation can count for your degree as a 6 point subject. The subject is an intensive and practical introduction to problem based learning and legal analysis in a small group environment. It develops strategic thinking and provides experience in a simulated international commercial arbitration. It is not just for those interested in commercial law. Law firms recognize and highly value the skills provided by the Vis moot.

You may apply for both Jessup moot and Vis moots, but be sure to indicate this when applying.

Deadline is Wednesday 17 July 2015, 6:00pm

1. Jessup Moot Ad 2016

The Jessup International Law Moot is the largest and most prestigious international mooting competition in the world.

Each year, Monash University sends a team to compete in the national rounds of the Jessup Moot in Canberra in February. The top two teams from these national rounds then progress to the international finals in Washington DC in March.

The competition will be held at Australia National University (ANU), Canberra, during the first week of February 2016. Students who are selected as part of the team may be eligible to be enrolled in a 6-point undergraduate unit – LAW 4806 – Jessup Moot Competition.

The faculty is currently running another international mooting competition – the Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot. Students cannot participate in both moots in the same year, but you are welcome to apply for both.

Deadline for applications is Friday 31 July by 5:00pm.
