1. Legal Internships – Law Reform Commission

Required Availability: December 2010 or January 2011
Duration: 8-12 weeks

The NSW Law Reform Commission invites law students entering their final year in 2011 to apply for legal internships to work alongside Commission members and legal staff during the summer university vacation, 2010-2011.

Job Description:

While not financially remunerated, an internship at the Law Reform Commission provides an opportunity to work closely with the Commissioners and law reform staff and contribute directly to the development of proposals for law reform.

Depending on the reference this could mean undertaking research, contributing to drafting consultation documents, assisting with consultation processes, or helping draft reports. The Commission credits the contribution of interns in its published papers.

Applicants should have:
 
A strong academic record, demonstrate well-developed legal research and writing skills and demonstrate an ability to contribute to a team environment.

Applications should contain a statement outlining how they meet these three criteria, together with a curriculum vitae and an academic record.

1. Secondment Opportunity To Work On Criminal Appeals

Salary: VPS 6 level (salary range $90,789-$121,495)
Duration:
Thursday 29 July, 2010 for 6 months

Job Description:

An exciting opportunity exists for a short term secondment or appointment as Deputy Registrar in the Court of Appeal, to work on the preparation and management of criminal appeals.

The work will involve the oversight and management of applications for leave to appeal conviction or sentence, bail applications and applications for leave to appeal interlocutory decisions in criminal trials.

Applicants should have:

Substantial experience in criminal trial and, ideally, appellate work, be able communicate well both in writing and orally, and have skills in prioritising and meeting deadlines.

It would also be desirable to have experience in working in a team environment and/or managing staff.

The Policy Manager of the Victorian Bar requires a Research Assistant 1 – 2 days per week for 4 to 6 weeks to assist with a review and organisation of various committee materials for archival purposes. 

Job Description:

You will be required to review archive materials from the Equality before the Law Committee as well as materials from the Women’s Barristers’ Association in order to prepare a chronology of major events and reforms and contribute to a milestone review of the Bars’ achievements and objectives regarding diversity.

A law student with excellent research and organisational skills, a concise writing style and a particular interest in gender issues and legal policy. They should also have excellent attention to detail, good judgment and have demonstrated a capacity for organisation.

1. Australian Research Council Laureate Fellowship PhD Scholarship

Professor George Williams is seeking to appoint a PhD scholar to work with him on his Australian Research Council Laureate Fellowship project ‘Anti-Terror Laws and the Democratic Challenge’.

The three year PhD scholarship (payable at $26,140 per year) is open to people who have an outstanding academic record and the potential to become a leading legal scholar.

The appointee will work closely with Professor Williams on the areas covered by the project. They will also have the opportunity to participate in the strong and supportive research culture at the Gilbert + Tobin Centre of Public Law at UNSW Law School.

2. Castan Centre In-House Internships – Applications Now Open

Job Description:

The Castan Centre in-house internship program gives Monash Law students who are interested and passionate about human rights the opportunity to become involved in the work of the Castan Centre for Human Rights Law.

 Interns will have the opportunity to assist in a variety of programs. These could include; research and writing on human rights projects, writing articles for the Castan Centre newsletter, and assisting with public education events such as lectures and the annual human rights conference.

Applications Requirements:
There will not be interviews for the internships and students are expected to write a very brief cover letter only (no longer than 1 page).
