1. Costello Lecture: “Alienation – Alien Nation”

We are mostly a lucky country, but some among us are aliens. Aliens because we are isolated by bad luck, or by our background, or by our means of arriving here, or alienated because we cling to values not shared by the majority. Aliens in our society receive a special kind of mistreatment, in the hope that they will disappear

Mr Julian Burnside AO QC joined the Bar in 1976 and took silk in 1989. While specialising in commercial litigation, Mr Burnside has acted pro bono in many human rights cases, in particular concerning the treatment of refugees.

2. ISRCL Conference

The International Society for the Reform of Criminal Law will be holding its 26th annual conference, International Responses to Social and Justice Challenges, in Hobart, Tasmania from August 15th – 18th this year. This year’s conference will examine the challenges that vulnerable populations, particularly women and children, present as they come into contact with the criminal justice system as victims of violence and abuse, witnesses and as perpetrators of crime. Conference participants will also explore the relationships between mental illness and criminal behavior, including violence, and look at mentally ill people as victims of violence rather than just perpetrators. The conference will feature innovative and effective approaches for addressing the challenges associated with these populations from a criminal justice perspective.

1. The Borat Problem in Negotiation

The Australian Centre for Justice Innovation (ACJI) proudly presents this Free Public lecture presented by Professor Russell Korobkin.

The ‘Borat Problem’ exists on the blurry border between contract and tort law. This lecture will explore the doctrinal indeterminacy and the underlying normative problem of bilateral
opportunism that has caused courts to respond in a variety of inconsistent and unsatisfying ways.

1. Starting Your Own Mediation Practice

Two years ago, Spencer Flint spoke on the topic, “Setting Up Your Own Mediation Practice”. Following many requests, he is now able to present a five hour workshop, covering all major aspects of setting up a mediation practice.

When: Saturday, 29th June from 10am to 3.30
Where: 139 Queensberry Street Carlton (parking is available at the rear of the building)
Cost: $125 current VADR members, $165 non members.
Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea will be provided and are included in the cost of the workshop.

The workshop will attract 5 CPD points.

Spencer Flint has had his own FDR/mediation practice since 2005. Prior to this he was an airline pilot for 30 years during which time he taught conflict resolution skills, Human Factors and Crew Resource Management to pilots and flight attendants. After leaving the airlines, he studied Hospitality and Management and set up and for several years ran a very successful 80 acre olive farm with a large restaurant entertainment centre attached before embarking on his present career. He is also a marriage celebrant, an accredited trainer and assessor, and provides PD in these areas throughout Australia.

2. Great Law Week Debate – “Free Speech Isn’t Free Enough in Australia”

Witness a team of prominent Monash Law Alumni battle it out with current Monash Law Students, over this highly controversial topic at the annual Great Law Week Debate.

2011 World Universities Debating Championship winner and Senior Policy Officer for the Department of Premier and Cabinet, Fiona Prowse (BA/LLB 2012), will lead the alumni team to argue “Free speech isn’t free enough in Australia”, supported by well renowned barrister Shivani Pillai (BA/LLB) and Kylie Lane (BEc(Hons), LLB(Hons), DipLang (Japanese) 2005) a highly regarded Senior Associate at Ashurst.

Proving this point won’t be easy against the Monash Law students’ team consisting of Duncan Wallace (Law/Arts) former winner of the Monash Senior Moot and Monash Junior Moot and a semi-finalist of the AAT Moot, Beatrice Paull (Law/Arts) a recent Octofinalist at 2013 Australian Novice Intervarsity Debating Championships and Sam Myers (Law/Arts) a semi-finalist in the 2012 Junior Moot, and winner in 2013.

Overseeing the Great Law Week Debate as moderator is current Monash Law student David Jancik (Law/Arts(Hons)), who currently works as a Legal and Business analyst a Piper Capital.

3. Get Active Week

To offset the negativity with the onset of cold weather, Federal government announcements and the ongoing construction in the Law building, staff and students are encouraged to lift their spirits and become involved in the university’s Get Active Campaign being held 6-12 May 2013. Please see details below:

• The Get Active Campaign is all about;
• Getting Out of the office and into some fresh air and sunshine,
• Getting Involved in some good old fashioned community togetherness,
• Having Fun- goodness knows we all need some of that at the moment- and;
• Getting Active- which will help us feel better all round.

The first ‘Get Active Week’ Campaign across Monash University is being held 6th and 12th May 2013. The themes of the week are to Get Out, Get Involved, Have Fun and to Get Active.

Monash Sport will be hosting a number of special events across Berwick, Caulfield, Clayton, Gippsland, Parkville and Peninsula campuses, as well as making a number of existing service offerings free of charge for Monash students and staff members. All activities are free to get involved in but what’s needed is for as many students and staff to join in the Fun! It would be great if as many people from the Law Faculty got out and got active!

Some of the marquee events happening during the week include:

• BBQ & Sporting Challenges – Join us for lunch on the Menzies lawn Tuesday 7 May from 12:30pm and take part in sporting challenges
• Menzies Stair Climb – Challenge yourself on the stairs! From 1pm on Thursday 9 May we’ll be taking the stairs to the top of the Menzies Building and want you to join us!
• Campus walks – Stretch your legs in your lunch breaks! Campus walks will be taking place at all campuses throughout the week.
• Mother’s Day Classic – Get Active Week will culminate on Sunday 12 May, with TeamMONASH participating in this annual event in support of the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Participate with friends, family, and as a part of the Monash University community!

4. Emer Casey Fun Run

Elena Karataeva, a PhD candidates and casual tutor at Monash Law, will on May the 26th be doing a 10 km “Emer Casey Fun Run” at Monash Clayton Campus that raises awareness and funds for ovarian cancer research through the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Emer Casey, an Irish girl, died at the age of 28 after a very short battle with ovarian cancer and Emer Casey Foundation was established in her honour.

Ovarian cancer does not have an early diagnostic test, and as a result, most of women are diagnosed at the advanced stages of it. More importantly, one of the main risk factors is being a female in an industrialized country, with a higher standard of living (see http://www.ocrf.com.au/about-ovarian-cancer/symptoms/ ). This means that yourself (if you are a female), along with other loved ones around you and the Australian female population are at risk.

So, please, if you can, donate via the fundraising page Together We Stand and support her first fundraising effort.

The LIV Legal Careers Fair is the premier event for Victorian law students commencing a career in law.
