1. CAMLA Essay Competition

The Communications and Media Law Association (CAMLA) essay competition to be held over the summer of 2014-15.

The competition has been staged very successfully for a number of years and CAMLA is again offering a prize of $1,000 and a 1-year CAMLA membership.
The winning essay may also be published in CAMLA’s Communications Law Bulletin and will be awarded at a CAMLA function to be held in early 2015.
It’s a terrific opportunity for students and we would be grateful if you could draw the competition to the attention of anyone who may be interested.

The purpose of the competition is to encourage high quality work in undergraduate and post-graduate communications and media law courses
and to improve links between those studying and those practising in the area.

The prize will be given for a previously unpublished essay of between 1,000 and 3,000 words on a subject relating to communications or media law.

Entries close on Wednesday 14 January, 2015.

2. Summer Human Rights Institute

The Leitner Center for International Law and Justice at Fordham Law School has announced the 2015 Summer Human Rights Institute (SHRI), to be held from Monday 20 until Friday 31 July, 2015 at Fordham Law School, Lincoln Center, New York City.

The SHRI is a two-week certificate program offering a comprehensive introduction to the theory and application of human rights law. The Institute provides an overview of international law, as well as focused human rights subject lectures, workshops and fieldwork, with Fordham Law faculty and attorneys in public and private practice here in New York. Suitable for both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as advanced professionals, the SHRI is open to participants from around the world. All courses and activities are conducted in English — no language assessment is required — and the Center will work with participants to secure necessary visas and other arrangements, as needed.

Participants who register by Wednesday 28 January, 2015 will receive a reduced tuition fee of $1700, which covers approximately 60 hours of instruction, course materials, lunch on most weekdays, and extracurricular activities. Limited on-campus housing is also available for an additional $1400 (this must be booked by Wednesday 28 January, 2015).

3. Volunteering at Family Law Assistance Program

Applicants who are currently on the wait-list to volunteer at the Family Law Assistance Program (FLAP) will remain on the list until Tuesday 31 December, 2014. After this date applicants will need to re-apply.

FLAP will be accepting new volunteers from Monday 12 January, 2015. Application forms will not be sent prior to this date.

EDO NSW has released the latest edition of Impact, our national journal of environmental law.

This edition of Impact contains articles on:

  • Ongoing litigation in Queensland to protect the World Heritage Listed Great Barrier Reef, which UNESCO is considering placing on its endangered list;
  • The increasing use of strategic assessments under the EPBC Act;
  • The fundamental principles for best practice biodiversity offsets; and
  • The implications of funding cuts for access to justice and the future of community-based public interest environmental law.

  • The importance of mindfulness for teachers
  • How to use mindfulness to facilitate student learning and wellbeing
  • Effective ways to introduce mindfulness into school and university environments
  • Designing and running effective programs
  • Organisational approaches to mindfulness: getting it in the curriculum and culture

It includes interactive presentations, Q&A sessions, discussion groups and networking opportunities.

2. China Law International Winter Camp

The program is sponsored by China Law Society. China Law Society is the largest nationwide legal organization of the legal professionals in China. It has established good relationship with the Law Council of Australia and signed the Memorandum of Mutual Cooperation with the Law Council.

China Law International Winter Camp will be held from Sunday 7 until Saturday 20 December, 2014 in Beijing and Xi’an, China. It is designed to give foreign law school students a great chance to learn Chinese legal system, culture and society.

The deadline for applications is Friday 31 October. Students wishing to apply for the camp or who have any questions, please contact the China Law Society directly.

6. Pink Ribbon Day

1. 2015 Prato Program

The 2015 Prato Program applications will open on Thursday 30 October, 2014 and strictly close on Friday 5 December, 2014.

Please note: All applications will be assessed together after the closing date of Friday 5 December, 2014.  They are assessed on the basis of the Law average and not first in, first served.

2. EDO NSW – Impact Issue No. 96

EDO NSW has released the latest edition of Impact, our national journal of environmental law.

This edition of Impact contains articles on:

  • Ongoing litigation in Queensland to protect the World Heritage Listed Great Barrier Reef, which UNESCO is considering placing on its endangered list;
  • The increasing use of strategic assessments under the EPBC Act;
  • The fundamental principles for best practice biodiversity offsets; and
  • The implications of funding cuts for access to justice and the future of community-based public interest environmental law.

Your assistance in circulating this journal to your students would be appreciated.

3. Monash Warwick Alliance Funding Schemes 2014

The second round of funding in 2014 for collaborations between Monash University and Warwick University is open.

The following scheme offers a targeted funding opportunity to students at both universities.

Alliance Student-Led Activity Scheme: open to students from undergraduate to PhD level to support activities that integrate students and transfer knowledge and innovation across institutions.

Applications close Monday 10 November

4. Pink Ribbon Day

Please help us raise funds for The Cancer Council by supporting Pink Ribbon Day on Monday 27 October by purchasing one of the items on display at the Undergraduate Student Services counter – Bears $10, Bracelets $7, Pens $6, Enamel pins $5.

Every dollar raised will fund life-saving cancer research, prevention programs to help women reduce their cancer risk, and support services for women facing cancer and their families.

We ask that you think of our colleagues, friends and families who have been affected by cancer when deciding to purchase one of these items.

3. Evaluating Student Health and Wellbeing in Monash Law and Marketing

Research into student health and wellbeing is being undertaken for Law students to participate in.

The aim/purpose of the research and possible benefits:

  1. Measure the levels of distress (anxiety, depression, stress, physical wellbeing) among students across all year levels in the faculty of Law and among Marketing students in BusEco.
  2. Measure level of engagement students experience within both faculties and the university and examine any relationship that may exist with psychological wellbeing, symptoms of physical ill health and academic results.
  3. Examine whether there are differences in measured levels of student distress (anxiety, depression, and stress), engagement and physical symptoms of ill health, between direct entry students and transfer students, across the duration of the Law degree, and between students of the two faculties.

3. IRSV Essay Competition

The Industrial Relations Society of Victoria invites all Victorian undergraduate and postgraduate students to submit an essay to the annual Industrial Relations Society of Victoria Student Essay Writing Competition. The winning entries at undergraduate and postgraduate level will each receive a cash prize of $500, and professional assistance by a member of the editorial board of academic journal Labour and Industry to develop the paper to a level ready for consideration for publication in the journal. The winners will also receive a free annual student membership of the IRSV for 2014-2015 year.
