3. Is There a Case for Fair Use? Lessons from the US – Seminar

The Australian Law Reform Commission recently recommended that a “fair use” defence to infringement should be introduced into the Copyright Act in place of the current “fair dealing” defences.

The new defence would be based on principles recognised in the U.S., where fair use has been part of the copyright landscape for a long time. Judgments in a series of recent fair use cases in the US, the Google Books case being notable, suggest that the doctrine there is developing and that its scope may be extending. The Attorney-General has indicated that his government is unlikely to implement the recommendation, but fair use proponents are maintaining their campaign.

In this seminar, Professor Geoffrey Scott, Professor of Law at the Penn State University School of Law in the United States, will lead the panel in considering the development and practical application of fair use in the U.S. and the potential lessons that recent experience there might hold for copyright owners, users and lawyers in Australia.

1. 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner

Join us at our 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner

Reminisce with friends. Catch up with your former teachers and faculty staff.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of our first intake of students. In March 1964, 150 students arrived at what was then a muddy and less-developed Clayton campus, eager to begin their studies at Victoria’s new Law School.

We have come a long way since those early days. We will celebrate this milestone at a gala dinner in June.

With alumnus, popular ABC Radio host Jon Faine as our Master of Ceremonies, a special welcome from alumna the Hon. Chief Justice Marilyn Warren AC, and the launch of our faculty history by the Hon. Chief Justice Robert French AC – the event is sure to be a night to remember.

Time: 6.30pm – 11.30pm
Date: Saturday 28 June, 2014
Venue: Savoy Ballroom, Grand Hyatt Melbourne, 123 Collins Street, Melbourne
Dress formal (black tie optional)
Tickets $220
Register at the website

The night includes:

Pre-dinner drinks
Three-course meal
Live auction and entertainment
Door prizes

2. Exciting New Volunteer Opportunity

Beginning in July 2014, Monash Oakleigh Legal Service (MOLS) and the Family Law Assistance Program (FLAP) will be piloting a new volunteer service providing Family Law advice on a Tuesday evening.

MOLS and FLAP are seeking up to 10 new volunteers who would like to be involved in the new program. Students will be responsible for interviewing clients, conducting research, developing practical legal skills, consulting with supervising lawyers and advising clients. Volunteers will be rostered on a fortnightly basis for a minimum 6 month commitment.

We are seeking volunteers who have undertaken a Family Law unit or can demonstrate an interest in Family Law through work experience/volunteering or employment.

For more information and an application form please e-mail Cara Nottle at mols-volunteer@monash.edu

Applications will be accepted until Friday 20 June, 2014.

3. Governor-General’s Prize

The Governor-General’s Prize is now in its tenth year, and, in addition to awarding over $10,000 in prize money each year, it has earned a reputation as the most prestigious essay competition in Australia.

Every year, the judging panel for the Prize has been chaired by a Justice of the High Court of Australia, and it is a feature of participation in the final round that undergraduates have the opportunity to be interviewed by one of the Justices.

This year, the Prize has been sponsored by Reconciliation Australia, and all of the essay questions are focussed on issues relating to constitutional recognition of Indigenous Australians. The questions, and further details, including past entries, may be found on the website.

Students wishing to enter the Prize are required to submit a 2,500 word essay online by Monday 30 June, 2014.

All finalists will be invited to a cocktail reception at the High Court of Australia in Canberra, with the Justices of the Court and other special guests to celebrate the tenth year of the Prize.
