1. Melbourne Uni Law Library Access Restrictions

From Monday May 27- Friday, May 31 and Monday June 3 – Friday June 7 access to the Melbourne University Law Library will be restricted to University of Melbourne students who will be asked to show their ID cards as they enter the Law Library. Non University of Melbourne students will be re-directed to other campus libraries – except for nearby neighbor, the Giblin-Eunson Library, which will also be restricting access to University of Melbourne students only.

1. Tour the Law Collection at the State Library of Victoria

Discover the huge range of law resources available. The State Library of Victoria has the largest publicly available law collections in Victoria. Established by Sir Redmond Barry, the collection is rich in historic depth and maintains up to date collections of legislation, law reports, journals and text books.

Join a tour of the collection (1hr) followed by a session exploring the electronic legal resources available both in the library and from home (45min). Stay for one or both sessions.

Meet in the foyer at 1.00pm

Dates: Monday 13 May, Wednesday 15 May, Friday 17 May
Time: 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM
Venue: State Library of Victoria, 328 Swanston Street, Melbourne

1. Have Your say – Library User Survey

The Library is conducting a user survey from April 29 to May 12, 2013,  giving staff and students the opportunity to provide feedback about the Library and its services and resources.  The survey, which is run every second year, is an important tool in assisting the Library to identify areas for improvement as well as ways we can more effectively partner with you in your learning.
We would very much welcome your views and feedback and encourage you to take part.  The survey should take about 10 minutes to complete.

1. New Library Website

  • The library website has been redesigned. Things that have been updated:
  • The URL has changed. The homepage is now: monash.edu/library.
  • This means all underlying pages also have new URLS so you will have to update any bookmarked pages you use.
  • To access resources like library guides and online tutorials and information on classes, you now go to the Research and Learning Skills ‘tab’ and particularly, the ‘Resources and activities’ section.
  • A new ejournal service replaces the old electronic journals page, you now access a list of electronic journals for browsing by clicking on the ‘A-Z ejournals’ link in the Search box on the Library homepage.
  • If you know which journal you are after simply put the title of the journal (enclosed in quotation marks) into Search e.g. “law institute journal”
  • There is a new ‘Information for – students’ page for general library information.

2. Westlaw AU

Legal Online is now known as Westlaw AU. All links to Legal Online content (like FirstPoint) will now send you there. Contact the library for any help navigating the new platform.

1. Clerkship Skills Tune-Up

Please note that there is an additional Clerkship skills tune-up session available on the 13th November 2.00 – 4.00 pm in at the Law Chambers. Undergraduate and postgraduate students may attend. Bookings are now available via the online class booking system.

Improve your legal research and writing skills for your clerkship or traineeship in this hands-on session. Practise these skills and hear Clerkship experiences. This session has been designed to refine skills which will assist during your clerkship and includes research and writing exercises and transition to work. Law firms use clerkships to identify students to take into their traineeship program.
