Monash University Chambers Move

Friday, June 25th, 2010

1. Relocation of Monash University Law Chambers to New Premises in 2011

As a result of significant and protracted refurbishments proposed for the Monash University Law Chambers building at 472 Bourke Street, an exciting new location has been found at 555 Lonsdale Street to accommodate Monash University’s Law Chambers and our highly successful postgraduate programs.

This new site, which we will occupy from April 2011 onwards, is located around the corner from William Street and only a short walk from our current location.  It is readily accessed by public transport and still in the midst of the central Melbourne legal precinct. It will be significantly larger than our current premises and occupy the ground, first and second floors of the building.

It will offer our students and staff amenities consistent with their expectations and our positioning as a progressive and pre-eminent Law School.  There will be a range of work and study enhancements with substantially more space available for group study and areas allocated for specific student use.

Our intention is to ensure that the transition to the new premises will take place with minimal disruption to students.  Should we anticipate that construction works at 472 Bourke Street will have an impact on examination periods planned for the second half of 2010, alternative arrangements will be put into place to ensure student exams will not be affected.

A website has been established to provide information for students and staff regarding the move to the new premises.  It will be regularly updated so please ensure that you keep abreast of it via the weekly Student Gazette as this will be the official method which the faculty will use to provide information to students as the relocation approaches.

Initial building works at the current premises are scheduled to commence in mid-July, however we are confident that these will not alter day to day teaching arrangements currently in place.

The new location will be a superb facility with broad appeal to all users, and we are confident that 555 Lonsdale Street will quickly become an icon for the faculty and further testimony to our fine and enduring reputation.
