1. Assessment Submissions

Assessments (research assignments and take-home examinations) must be submitted as an electronic copy to:
pg.assessment@law.monash.edu.au

The email subject should include: Unit Code – Exam or Assignment – Surname (For example: LAW7212-Assignment-Surname).

Submission of a completed assessment task cover sheet is required.

Please remember you are required to keep an up-to-date copy of all submitted assessments to safeguard against the loss of work through accident or error.
Please note: 
You must put your name and Student ID number on every page of your assignment either as a header or a footer and you must number the pages in your assignment.

2. New Units – Enrol Now!

The Faculty is pleased to advise that Professor Samuel Murumba from the Brooklyn Law School in New York will be teaching the unit Current Issues in Intellectual Property (LAW7309), scheduled to commence on Wednesday 26 May, 2010.

The unit will concentrate on key, cutting-edge issues not covered in depth or at all in the other Intellectual Property Units. These issues mainly arise from the dramatic impact of complex technological and global developments on Intellectual Property law and practice.

They include:
IP-Jurisdictional issues, especially in the digital networked environment;The intersection of trademarks and commercial designations with domain names, especially the proposed generic top-level domain names (gTLDs) and domain names in non-roman characters which will have profound implications for online trademarks.
The expanding scope of trade mark protection (well-known marks/dilution, defensive registration etc).
Comparative database protection, including the EC Directive and US developments.
Comparative business method patents including the anticipated US Supreme Court decision in Bilskietc.

1. 2010 Australian Government – Rio Tinto NTRB Scholarships

The Australian Government and Rio Tinto are once again offering two scholarships to lawyers currently working or interested in working at Native Title Representative Bodies (NTRBs) or Native Title Service Providers (NTSPs). 

Successful candidates will undertake a one-year Master of Laws (LLM) in Mineral Law and Policy at the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP) at the University of Dundee and must commit to work within an NTRB or NTSP for a minimum period of two years upon their return.

Candidates must be:
Australian citizens or permanent residents and reside in Australia
There is no age restriction for applicants.

FaHCSIA also provides an additional AU$15,000 towards the living expenses of those recipients of the scholarship who are working within the NTRB system at the time they receive the scholarship.

The program commences in September 2010.

1. Census date for Juris Doctor units in Trimester 1, 2010

The census date for Juris Doctor units in Trimester 1, 2010 is:
Tuesday, 16 February 2010.

If a student discontinues a unit before the census date, the student will have ‘Withdrawn no-load’, which means the withdrawn will be recorded on transcript.

If a student discontinues a unit after the census date but before the withdrawn fail date, the student will have ‘Withdrawn late’, which means 100% of fees retained and withdrawn will be recorded on transcript.

1. 2010 Re-enrolment for Postgraduate Law Students 

Please remember that all students, including double degree Law students, are required to re-enrol via WES for the 2010 academic year (e.g. Sem 1 and Sem 2, or Trimester 1, 2, and 3 ) between 12 October and 23 November 2009.

If a unit is noted as ‘full’ on the timetable, please contact your course coordinator to be placed on a waiting list.

Late Enrolment

If a student has not re-enrolled by 23 November 2009, they may do so between the 24 November to 18 December 2009 and a late fee of $250 will be applied.  If a student does not re-enrol within this period they risk losing their place in the course.

Very Late Enrolment

If a student has not re-enrolled by 18 December 2009 they will need to submit a Reinstatement of Enrolment Request.  The Faculty will determine if there are any places available in the course in 2010.  If a student is permitted to re-enrol they will incur a late fee of $250.

2. Monash Faculty of Law/Washington College of Law – Dual JD Degree

In an Australian-first agreement with a US law school, the Faculty of Law has established a dual-degree program with Washington College of Law (WCL), American University, Washington, D.C. Students who successfully complete the program will be awarded a Juris Doctor degree from both law schools. 

The dual degree will involve two years of study in Washington, D.C. in order to meet the requirements of the American Bar Association. Upon completion of the dual-degree, students will be able to sit the U.S. bar examination and/or undertake Practical Legal Training in order to gain admission to practice in Victoria.
