1. Costello Lecture: “Alienation – Alien Nation”

Speaker: Monash alumnus, Mr Julian Burnside AO QC (BEc 1972, LLB 1973)

We are mostly a lucky country, but some among us are aliens. Aliens because we are isolated by bad luck, or by our background, or by our means of arriving here, or alienated because we cling to values not shared by the majority. Aliens in our society receive a special kind of mistreatment, in the hope that they will disappear

Mr Julian Burnside AO QC joined the Bar in 1976 and took silk in 1989. While specialising in commercial litigation, Mr Burnside has acted pro bono in many human rights cases, in particular concerning the treatment of refugees.

2. Re-thinking the Role of IP

Speaker: Dr Francis Gurry

The lecture will explore the major economic, social, and political developments affecting intellectual property. It will examine how innovation and intellectual property are increasingly central to economic strategy and competitive advantage, and will show how the knowledge economy is causing an adjustment to the way in which we think of the role of intellectual property.

Dr Francis Gurry is Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). He is the highest-ranking Australian official in a United Nations agency. Dr Gurry is a distinguished alumnus, and a Professorial Fellow, of Melbourne Law School. He holds an LLB and LLM from the University of Melbourne, and a PhD from the University of Cambridge. He practised as a solicitor in Melbourne and Sydney prior to joining WIPO in 1985.

1. The Borat Problem in Negotiation

The Australian Centre for Justice Innovation (ACJI) proudly presents this Free Public lecture presented by Professor Russell Korobkin.

The ‘Borat Problem’ exists on the blurry border between contract and tort law. This lecture will explore the doctrinal indeterminacy and the underlying normative problem of bilateral
opportunism that has caused courts to respond in a variety of inconsistent and unsatisfying ways.
