1. 2013 Publication of Law Electives

Please note that from 2013, the Law electives for undergraduate students have been moved to the University Handbook on the following URL:

1. LAW5207 Honours Thesis Information Session

All eligible students wishing to undertake LAW5207, the Honours Research Unit (ie thesis plus seminar program) are invited to an Honours Information Session to be held on Wednesday October 10 1-2pm in L5/12. The Honours Convenor, Dr Kathy Laster, will outline the requirements of the program and discuss the process for selecting a thesis topic and a supervisor. Information about the Honours program is also available on the Law website.

1. LAW5901 Research Practicum (6pts) – Application Deadline Extended

Applications for the following unit will now be accepted for Semester 1, 2013 until Monday 24 September, 2012:

LAW5901 Research Practicum (6pts)

Application forms and unit information are available from the ‘Research Practicum’ website or at the Law Student Services counter.

The Research Practicum is a 6 point elective unit to be offered in Semester 1, 2013. The Unit will provide selected high achieving, later year LLB students with an opportunity to contribute to the work of a leading regulatory, law reform and/or policy setting organisation in the legal sector.

This selective unit places our most able students for 18 days in one of 18 public sector agencies including, the Victorian Law Reform Commission, Judicial College, Sentencing Advisory Council, Magistrates Court, National Institute of Forensic Science, Red Cross, Office of the Commissioner for Environmental Sustainability and the Public Interest Law Clearing House.

Research Practicum is the kind of unit that you will find rewarding and challenging.

1. 2013 Peer Mentor Program

The Monash Peer Mentor Program  is an excellent opportunity to give back to the Law School and enhance your resume. There are three positions available in 2013: Peer Mentor, Super Mentor and Deputy Peer Mentor Co-ordinator. More information about the positions can be found on www.monashlss.com

We encourage all Law Students to apply, particularly for the new role of Deputy Peer Mentor Co-ordinator as it is anticipated that the holder of this position will become the Peer Mentor Co-ordinator in 2014.

3. Semester 2 SETU Surveys

Can you please complete the Semester 2 SETU survey for your Unit? You can access this survey for your S2 Units via your my.monash portal. Please note that the SETU surveys close off on the following dates:

  • 12 Sept – some LLM and most UG units
  • 7 Sept – Winter Units – LAW4160
  • Full Year Units – the SETU surveys will open on 21 Sept and close on 26 Oct
  • T3-58 Units – the SETU surveys will open on 1 Oct and close on 15 Oct
  • T4-57 Units – the SETU surveys will open on 25 Oct and close on 1 Nov.

If you don’t know which Teaching period your Unit is in then you can check up on the relevant timetable.

We really appreciate you completing these online SETU surveys each Semester as your ratings and feedback help our teachers to continually improve the quality of our Units.

Following the success of the November 2011 trip to the UK, the Charlie Perkins Scholarship Trust and the Aurora Project are delighted to announce the opening of the application period for another exciting opportunity to participate in an overseas visit to Cambridge and Oxford universities in the UK in October this year. The visit may also include Harvard and New York University in the US.

The Lamp organization is offering a scholarship giving one law student to experience a tour of indigenous Australia, led by a traditional Aboriginal Elder. For more information please see here.
