1. LAW4160 Negotiation & Mediation – Semester 2 Places Available

There are places available for the above unit in semester 2.  The unit commences 12th August and runs for 5 Fridays (9am-5pm).

1. Animal Law – Offered for a Second Time

Due to demand, animal Law is being offered a second time as an undergraduate subject at Melbourne University in Semester 2, 2011. Enrolment is open to undergraduates and cross-institutional enrolment is also available. The second offering of this subject mimics the popularity of animal law studies at international universities including Harvard, Columbia and McGill Universities.

Cross institutional enrolment is available.

Guest speakers will include world renowned ethicist Professor Peter Singer of Princeton University, who will deliver the second lecture.

The subject will critically examine several areas including the state of Animal Law in Australia, the rights of advocates and protesters and the future of animal welfare law reform. Several recent high profile issues will be analysed such as the impending federal government’s challenge to Japanese whaling before the International Court of Justice, live exports and factory farming.

Classes will be a 2 hour seminar per week with assessment likely being a 90% research essay of 5,000 words. 10% may be class participation/ attendance..

1. Fees – Change for Summer / Winter Law Units

As of winter 2011, student should note that units offered by the Faculty of Law during the winter or summer teaching periods will be charged as per a student’s current fee status, ie students enrolled in a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) may undertake summer and winter semester units on a CSP basis and will pay the relevant Student Contribution Amount (SCA) per unit.

NB The decision to offer units at CSP rates is an individual faculty’s decision. Students must refer to each individual unit on any other faculty’s summer/winter web sites to ascertain if the unit is being offered on a CSP or full -fee basis for CSP students.

1. Interested in combining a 12-point elective unit with a holiday in Europe?

Intensive (2 week) summer unit in europe
February 2011

When: approx. Thurs 3rd – Thurs 17th (to be confirmed)
Where: Monash University Prato Centre (italy) and Brussels (Belgium) Apg 4442/5442: intensive European union study in Europe

Students will not only study, but also visit political, government and corporate institutions to better understand the roles and functions of these institutions within the European Union. The program incorporates lectures and seminars given by highly qualified academics and practitioners from the European Union, in areas including the History and Politics of the European Union, EU Institutions, Business in the EU, the European Financial System, Business Cultures in Europe, Social Issues facing Europe, EU Enlargement, and EU-Australian Relations.
Assessment: Presentation and Test (whilst in Europe), Essay (due late March, back in Australia). Students can also elect to conduct an autonomous research project.

There are no prerequisites for this unit. It is open to Monash students and to students from other Australian universities.

Monash students who partake in this study unit may be entitled to $500 from the Monash Abroad Travel Grant Scheme.
