1. Exciting Law Electives for Semester 2, 2015

LAW4161 Introduction to European Union Law

Introduction to EU Law gives students an overview of the law of the European Union, the most successful supranational legal order in the world. With 28 Member States, the EU’s legal order touches on almost all areas of national competence, from competition to consumer protection, social policy and the environment.

  • The unit is very different from the majority of law subjects offered at Monash, providing an opportunity to study a legal subject not focused on Australia.

  • The unit is suitable for students hoping to expand their knowledge of transnational and international systems of law in order to enhance their career opportunities and to work at international institutions.

  • It is also useful for students who are simply keen on making use of the legal rights associated with a passport of an EU Member State, for the purposes of extended European travel!

  • The unit offers an international and comparative perspective on a unique transnational legal system and insights into an exciting and rapidly developing discipline.

LAW4242 Introduction to Transitional Justice

This is an exciting, interdisciplinary unit that will be run in Sem 2, 2015. It is a cross between international criminal law, international human rights and international relations.

It will analyse the way that societies, ranging from Rwanda to South Africa to East Timor, recover from a legacy of human rights abuse. Discussion will include a consideration of prosecutions, truth commissions, reparations programs as well as mechanisms of institutional reform and their relevance to various case studies.
