1. Monash Law Postgraduate Research Scholarships

Closing date 31 October 2011

The Faculty of Law invites expressions of interest from Law graduates qualified to undertake postgraduate research leading to a doctoral degree.  We offer the Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).  Some scholarships will be available for suitably qualified candidates.  Successful candidates will receive a  non-taxable stipend for 3 years of full time candidature. In addition, the Law Faculty  gives very favourable consideration to engaging its doctoral students in sessional teaching within its teaching programs.

Applicants should be Australian permanent residents or citizens of Australia or New Zealand with a first class undergraduate honours degree or the equivalent, such as a masters degree with a significant research component, a suitable publication record or a demonstrable research record in your employment.

1. Copies of Examination Scripts

A new procedure has been put in place for students who wish to request copies of their exam scripts.  At the end of the exam period the relevant application form will be made available on the Law Faculty website:
http://law.monash.edu.au/current-students/resources/forms/index.html

Students must submit the application form and cash payment of $5 per exam by the due date, which will be clearly stated on the form.  NO LATE APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

Requests made after the closing date will need to follow the University Freedom of Information procedures:

Any enquiries regarding obtaining copies of exam scripts can be made in person at the Law Student Services counter:

2. Semester 2 SETU Surveys

Please can you make sure that you have completed an online SETU survey for each Semester 2 Unit in which you are enrolled as these close on Friday 28 October. It is very easy to do as you just do it through your my.monash portal.  It is really important that we do get your feedback about what you liked and disliked in your Semester 2 Units including the teaching in the Units. We do value your feedback from the SETU surveys and we use it to help improve our Units.

1. JD Learning Skills Seminar – Chambers

To assist JD students prepare for the upcoming exams, the Law Learning Skills Advisers have organised a one-hour seminar on Tuesday 25 October at 1.00 pm, repeated on Friday 28 October at 1.00pm and 2.00 pm. Bookings on online via my.monash.

2. Seminars at the City Chambers

Westlaw and Lexis Basics

Westlaw and Lexis are two of the world’s largest legal databases.  They contain hundreds of full text journals and primary sources from the UK, US, Canada and other jurisdictions. Sandra Pyke from the Law Library will be conducting sessions at the Law Chambers to help students (any staff who are interested are most welcome too)  to get the best from these databases.
This session is aimed at later year JD, LLM and SJD students and staff.

Legislative Research Refresher

Want a refresher in legislative research? Come to this session to learn more about locating and updating legislation, finding commencement dates, locating extrinsic materials, legislative tracking and more…

Clerkship Skills Tune-up

Improve your legal research and writing skills for your summer, or winter, clerkship in this hands-on session. Practise these skills and hear Clerkship experiences from your fellow students. This session has been designed to refine skills which will assist during your clerkship and includes research and writing exercises and transition to work. Law firms use clerkships to identify students to take into their traineeship program. Make yours the best clerkship ever.

3. Volunteer Position – National Native Title Council Law

The National Native Title Council (NNTC) is the peak body representing the alliance of Native Title Representative Bodies and Native Title Service Providers (NTRBs/NTSPs) from around Australia. The NNTC is recruiting two volunteers to work 1 to 1.5 days per week to assist CEO Brian Wyatt and Senior Administrative Officer Carolyn Betts in the day to day management and running of the NNTC. Tasks will vary but are likely to include accompanying the CEO to meetings, conferences and events, legal and policy research and liaison with key stakeholders. The NNTC is located at 638 Queensberry Street, North Melbourne VIC 431.

The applications for this position open 9am 17 October and close 5pm 24 November 2011.

Applications are to include a resume, an academic transcript and a cover letter. The cover letter is to provide evidence of the essential and desirable skills required for this position. The essential skills required for this position include well-developed communication skills and academic achievement. Desirable skills for this position include an understanding of Indigenous culture (and an explanation as to how this understanding was derived) and experience or skills in information technology (including the ability to feed/maintain a website, twitter and facebook page).

1. 4th Gaire Blunt Scholarship – $5000

Business Law Section is offering the 4th Gaire Blunt Scholarship during 2012.

Attached is a Flyer and an Application Form for the scholarship.  The Section has extended the time for receipt of entries next year from 31 January 2012 to 31 May 2012.

2. ALPSA Essay Competition for Law Students

The competition is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students currently enrolled at an Australian University. It is a prestigious competition and is judged by a panel which includes Justice Susan Kiefel AC (of the High Court of Australia), Professor Geoffrey Goldsworthy (President of the Australian Society of Legal Philosophy), Professor Wojciech Sadurski (University of Sydney) and Dr Jonathan Crowe (University of Queensland).

Our first place winner will receive $250 and will have their essay published in the Justice and the Law Society’s ‘Pandora’s Box’ law journal. Second place will receive $120 and third place, $70. There is also a selection of new legal philosophy books that will be awarded randomly to entrants.
