1. Editorial Committee Applications for the Monash University Law Review Now Open

The Monash University Law Review is the flagship academic journal of the Monash Law School. It is highly regarded by the legal profession and international law schools.

The 2019 Editors and Faculty Advisors are accepting applications from current LLB and JD students to join the Editorial Committee for 2019. Committee members will be required to complete 3–4 partial edits of an article during the course of the year. The time commitment per edit is approximately 10 hours. Training will be provided to all new committee members.

We are looking for highly committed students with strong time management skills and attention to detail. Applicants with at least one full year of study remaining will be preferred. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, those with a disability and students from under-represented backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply, including those supported by Monash under the Equity definitions.

To apply please send your CV, cover letter and latest unofficial academic transcript (including your most recent results) to law.review@monash.edu with the subject line ‘2019 Committee Application’. Your cover letter should outline your reasons for applying, suitability for the role and expected graduation date. Applications will close January 30 at 5PM. Students will be notified if they have progressed to the next stage of the application process –– an editing exercise –– shortly following the close of applications.

2. Sir John Monash Medal – nominations now open

Each year, the Faculty of Law awards the Sir John Monash Medal for Outstanding Achievement.
The Sir John Monash Medal for Outstanding Achievement is awarded to a student who:
  • has completed the academic requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Laws and is eligible to graduate;
  • is judged to have an excellent academic record; and
  • has demonstrated a significant commitment to advancing the University’s goals of social justice, human rights and a sustainable environment.

Nominations for the Sir John Monash medal close Friday 22 February 2019.

A nomination can be made by the student, a fellow student, and any Monash staff member or any member of the community by completing the nomination form.

All nominations must include a letter from the nominator explaining the reason for the nomination and a statement from the nominee addressing how he/she meets each of the eligibility criteria. Please also provide any supporting information which could be of use to the selection committee and permission from the student to have his or her academic records released to the selection committee.

Please submit your completed nomination form and any supporting documentation to the Faculty of Law Student Services Manager via the online submission form by no later than 5:00 pm on Friday 22 February 2019.

2018 marks the 25th anniversary of the passage of the Native Title Act. Since that time, the Aboriginal land estate has grown to touch on some 40% of the Australian landmass over which some form of Aboriginal or Torres Strait right or title is held by various First Nations peoples. Yet Aboriginal people remain the most economically and socially disadvantaged in the nation.

In this special guest lecture Professor Michael Lavarch, Emeritus Professor of Law at QUT, will reflect on the Native Title regime, its achievements and disappointments and canvass the future developments on the issue of compensation for validation of past titles in light of the recent High Court hearing in Griffiths v The Northern Territory.

The Bundyi Girri Seminar Series aims to bring together a broad range of the RMIT community and members of the Victorian community to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives, histories and cultures, to ignite conversation around relevant issues and to spark change.

The Victorian Bar is offering up to three paid clerkship positions to Indigenous law students.

What is involved?

The clerkship will take place on mutually agreed dates in February and March 2019, depending on university timetables.

The clerkship involves 3 consecutive weeks with rotations as follows:

  • One week at the Victorian Bar;
  • One week at the Federal Court of Australia; and
  • One week at the Supreme Court of Victoria.

1. NILS Business & Human Rights Moot Court Competition – Netherlands 2019

The Network for International Law Students is back with the second NILS Business & Human Rights Moot Court Competition. 
NILS Business & Human Rights Moot Court Competition is the world’s first and only moot court competition exclusively focusing on the emerging area of Business & Human Rights.
The next moot will be held in Netherlands in July 2019. Preceding the final rounds in Netherlands, there will be qualifying regional rounds for the purpose of selecting the best teams to compete in Netherlands. We have the support of leading experts and organisations working on the area of Business and Human Rights Competition.

Registrations are now open for the next Clerkship Masterclass to be held on Friday 16 November at the Monash Law Chambers in the City.

The Masterclass has been designed to deliver essential, practical skills relating to research, writing, preparing memos and tips to work effectively during the Clerkship. The sessions are presented by lawyers from top Law Firms, expert staff from the Law Library, academics from the Law Faculty and staff from other legal organisations.

Preference is given to students who have secured a clerkship or equivalent.

Please note that we usually start the Masterclass at approximately 10:00am and conclude by 3.30pm. Note that as this is a practical session, we ask that you bring along a laptop or mobile device, if possible.

A more detailed breakdown of the day will be provided once the program has been finalised.  A light lunch is provided.

2. Mocha Is Not Coffee! Fringe Festival play written and directed by Monash Law student

 

Mocha Is Not Coffee! is a new work written and directed by Verity Norbury which follows the story of four highly competitive (and self-destructive) law students. It’s all fun and terror until one goes missing!

This performance is being used as part of the playwright’s Honours Thesis, which is looking at the ways in which performance methodologies may open up a conversation around mental health and law school.

1. Commonwealth Parliament internship opportunities

Applications are now open for Commonwealth Parliamentary Internships.
For the past 25 years, the Australian National Internships Program (ANIP) has offered internships in the Commonwealth Parliament to students from across Australia. The internship combines the unique experiences of a work placement in the Commonwealth Parliament of Australia, with a focused research project supported by a course on applied policy research.
Students will undertake the Commonwealth Parliamentary Internship during the First or Second Semester of 2019 for the equivalent of 12 units of course credit. They will need to apply within their home university for cross-institutional approval to undertake the program.

2. EcoPeace Middle East Internship – Israel

Do you have a passion for policy, sustainable development, protecting the environment and promoting dialogue and peace-building? Would you like to expand your global experience and knowledge beyond a typical internship?

The Faculty of Law has an agreement with EcoPeace Middle East, Israel for 1 student (either UG or PG) to intern for 12 weeks, approximately December to February.

The successful student will be required to work on policy, external communication, resource development, research and education within the organisation. Please note that EcoPeace is not a law firm and the successful student will not be working in the legal department.
