1. Torts in Commercial Law Conference

Torts in Commercial Law is an international conference exploring the nature and operation of the common law of torts in commercial law.

The speakers for Torts in Commercial Law are leaders in tort scholarship and practice drawn from the highest ranks of the judiciary, academy and profession. The conference is convened by Associate Professor Simone Degeling (UNSW) and Professor James Edelman (University of Oxford and Conjoint Professor at UNSW) and is the successor to the highly successful Fusion Conference (2004), and Restitution in Commercial Law Conference (2007)

1. Global Management Challenge

Take on the world with the Global Management Challenge – the world’s biggest strategic management competition.

Students from across all 10 faculties and a range of disciplines are needed to represent Monash in 2010.

This competition might seem like it’s just for business students, but it’s not! Make the most of this opportunity to gain, develop, practice a skill that employers want all students to be able to apply.

As a quick overview the competition requires you to:

Form a board of directors and run a virtual company.
Make decisions that will affect the company’s performance and therefore share price.
Proceed to the next round if they have highest share price in their division.
Represent Australia at the international final against 30 other countries, if they are the national winner (the returning team from 2009 was 2nd nationally and just narrowly missed out on a trip to Moscow).

2. Kirby Cup Law Reform Competition

The Kirby Cup Law Reform Competition is a unique opportunity for Australian law students to consider the role of law reform and law reform agencies in Australia.

In 2010, students must submit a paper (between 2,000 and 4,000 words) on the following topic:

The Honourable Justice Michael Kirby AC CMG, a former Justice of the High Court of Australia and the first Chairperson of the ALRC has said that: ‘law reform is much too important to be left to the experts’. Please discuss the importance of consultation to the law reform process, using at least one Australian Law Reform Commission inquiry as an example.

Students may participate in the competition as individuals or as a team of up to four students.

The closing date for entries is Friday 8 October, 2010.

3. Undergraduate Essay Competition

The Governor-General’s Undergraduate Essay Competition is Australia’s most prestigious civics essay competition. It is open to Australian undergraduate students (including LLB, JD and Honours students) studying in all faculties at universities across Australia and includes questions that are related to law, politics and other contemporary issues facing Australia.

The 2010 Competition is offering up to $33,000 in cash prizes to the winning authors of 2,500 word essays.

Every year the Competition is judged by a panel of distinguished individuals including a High Court Justice and prominent academics. The final judging panel this year is being chaired by The Hon. Robert French AC, Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia.

This prestigious competition provides students with the opportunity to be further recognised for their academic skill, talent and research.

1. Conflict Resolution from Religious Traditions

This seminar is run by the Hamline University School of Law (Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA) in conjunction with the Rothberg International School at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. All classes are conducted entirely in English.

This program has been attended by Australian students since 2006 and will be taught by leading Israeli and international academics, legal practitioners and judges.  This program is structured into two sections:
Conflicts between persons from the same religious tradition
Conflicts between persons from different religious traditions

3. Sydney Law School Postgraduate Students Conference 2010

Emerging social, environment and economic issues create complex issues for legal scholars to investigate. How do we undertake successful law reform? How are legal developments translated into social change? What are the consequences of law’s application to problems such as climate change, human rights abuses and economic reform?

Sydney Law School invites post-graduate research students in law and associated disciplines in the social sciences and humanities to present on these and related issues, particularly:
Law reform in response to new social, environment and economic issues
The differences between ‘law-in-books’ and ‘law-in-action’
The consequences of law’s application to social problems
Law and the social sciences, empirical research or social theory
Social justice and the law

This is an opportunity to experience Sydney Law School in its new state-of-the-art facilities, to hear presentations on the thesis research process and participate in discussions on critical research questions.

Prizes, bursaries and financial assistance

A prize of $1,000 will be awarded for the best written paper presented at the conference.

Financial assistance for travel, accommodation or fee relief is available upon application for students who demonstrate need. Details will be provided later.
