1. 2015 Prato Program

The 2015 Prato Program applications will open on Thursday 30 October, 2014 and strictly close on Friday 5 December, 2014.

Please note: All applications will be assessed together after the closing date of Friday 5 December, 2014.  They are assessed on the basis of the Law average and not first in, first served.

2. Evaluating Student Health and Wellbeing in Monash Law and Marketing

Research into student health and wellbeing is being undertaken for Law students to participate in.

The aim/purpose of the research and possible benefits:

1. Measure the levels of distress (anxiety, depression, stress, physical wellbeing) among students across all year levels in the faculty of Law and among Marketing students in BusEco.
2. Measure level of engagement students experience within both faculties and the university and examine any relationship that may exist with psychological wellbeing, symptoms of physical ill health and academic results.
3. Examine whether there are differences in measured levels of student distress (anxiety, depression, and stress), engagement and physical symptoms of ill health, between direct entry students and transfer students, across the duration of the Law degree, and between students of the two faculties.

3. IRSV Essay Competition

The Industrial Relations Society of Victoria invites all Victorian undergraduate and postgraduate students to submit an essay to the annual Industrial Relations Society of Victoria Student Essay Writing Competition. The winning entries at undergraduate and postgraduate level will each receive a cash prize of $500, and professional assistance by a member of the editorial board of academic journal Labour and Industry to develop the paper to a level ready for consideration for publication in the journal. The winners will also receive a free annual student membership of the IRSV for 2014-2015 year.

4. Pink Ribbon Day

Please help us raise funds for The Cancer Council by supporting Pink Ribbon Day on Monday 27 October by purchasing one of the items on display at the Undergraduate Student Services counter – Bears $10, Bracelets $7, Pens $6, Enamel pins $5.

Every dollar raised will fund life-saving cancer research, prevention programs to help women reduce their cancer risk, and support services for women facing cancer and their families.

6. Young Endeavour Youth Scheme

In 2015 the national Sail Training Ship Young Endeavour will set sail for an extraordinary voyage around the world.

1. Honours Research Unit Information Session

Many of the Faculty’s top students in their penultimate or last year of law elect to enrol in the Honours Research Unit (Honours Thesis LAW4327).

The Honours Research Unit is a 12 credit point unit intended for students with an interest and aptitude to produce a significant piece of original work in an area of the law that fascinates them. The Unit involves students writing an 8-10,000 word thesis under the supervision of an academic member of staff, on a topic chosen by the student, and approved by the Honours Convenor.

Students also attend 3 symposiums throughout the year, designed to support them through the research process. At the end of the year students present their thesis findings to their peers and invited guests at a 2 day Honours Conference.

To be eligible for the Honours Research Unit, students must have an average of 72% or better across their law units, and have no more than 72 credit points remaining to complete the requirements of their law degree.

Students are invited to an Information Seminar on the Honours Unit on Wednesday 8 October, 2014 at 1pm in L4 in the Law Building. This will outline key elements of the program, and staff will be available to answer your questions.

1. 2015 Traineeship at Rotstein Commercial Lawyers

Rotstein Commercial Lawyers are inviting students graduating in 2015 to apply for a traineeship for the 2015 year at our firm.

We have one traineeship position available for a student who is at least in their 3rd year to do part time (up to 3 days per week, minimum 2 days) to provide para-legal and admin support at our firm. This will be a paid position. We are a commercial law firm so looking for candidates who have a commercial law focus – IP, property law, business law and commercial litigation.

1. 16th National Family Law Conference 2014

This year’s National Family Law conference will take place from Tuesday 7 until Friday 10 October at the Hilton Sydney and has a truly eclectic program which is sure to be not only interesting for students, but also educational and beneficial for studies and resumes.

There are currently 800 registered delegates and this number is increasing
every day. The conference will be using an app instead of a printed program, and the app is available on the app store now for download. To look at the conference program and speakers who will be presenting this year, type in FL14 into the app store on either your Apple or Android device and download.

There is a heavily discounted student rate of $250 for the day and many social functions on offer. In particular, the New and Young Lawyer’s Evening at Paddington’s Bowls Club, Thursday 9 October. This event costs $40 and will provide students with the opportunity to interact and network with recent graduates, gain a real understanding of what to expect post studies and receive advice and tips on how to achieve their goals.

All too often mediation is the default position for parties and lawyers wanting to use ADR to resolve a dispute. However, there are many different ADR models, and some maybe more appropriate to the nature of the dispute and parties than mediation. This seminar will provide insight into the use of Early Neutral Evaluation (ENE) in a variety of jurisdictions around the world and identify when it might be appropriate to use, and the pros and cons of broadening our ADR options.

4. Book Launch – “The Good Lawyer”

“The Good Lawyer” explores the ethical and professional challenges that confront people who work in the law – or are considering it – and offers principled and pragmatic advice about how to overcome such challenges.

This book takes a holistic approach that begins with your innate humanity. It urges you to examine your motives for seeking a career in law, to foster a deep understanding of what it means to be ‘good’, and to draw on your virtue and judgement when difficult choices arise, rather than relying on compliance with rules or codes.

The Good Lawyer analyses four important areas of legal ethics – truth and deception, professional secrets, conflicts of interest, and professional competence – and explains the choices that are available when determining a course of moral action. It links theory to practice, and includes many examples, diagrams and source documents to illustrate ethical concepts, scenarios and decision making.

5. Commercial CPD Seminar – Civil Procedure Act 2010

The last CPD Seminar for 2014 will explore the operation of the Civil Procedure Act 2010 in modern civil litigation, especially in light of recent cases including Yara Australia Pty Ltd v Oswal [2013] VSCA 337. Ethical issues arising out of the operation of the Act will also be addressed.

6. National Law Honours Student Conference

The National Law Honours Student Conference provides graduating LLB and JD students and recent graduates with the opportunity to present their law honours research, senior research thesis or comparable major research project in an academic setting. Session chairs in the students’ research field will offer constructive feedback and advice, including possible publication. There is a prize for best presentation, attendance is free and lunch and drinks are provided. A keynote address will be provided by Ass Prof Katherine Biber, of UTS Law Faculty, and the Hon Kevin Lindgren AM QC, former Federal Court Judge, will be the distinguished chair of prize-giving. Attendance is by invitation only upon submission of the paper abstract.

8. VADR: Metal Health Complaints Commissioner

You are cordially invited to a VADR CPD event will take place on Tuesday 28 October, 2014when Lynne Coulson Barr, the new Mental Health Complaints Commissioner will speak on the topic “New approaches to resolving mental health services complaints.”

The need for an independent specialist mental health complaints body was identified from community consultations and feedback in the context of mental health legislative reforms consultations. The Mental Health Complaints Commissioner was established under the Mental Health Act 2014, and commenced operation on Tuesday 1 July, 2014. Lynne Coulson Barr is Victoria’s first Mental Health Complaints Commissioner and will provide an outline of the role of the office and approaches to resolution of complaints about mental health services.
