2. Wellbeing

Smiling Mind

“Smiling Mind is a unique web and App-based program developed by a team of psychologists with expertise in youth and adolescent therapy, Mindfulness Meditation and web-based wellness programs. Smiling Mind is a free tool that will assist in improving the lives of young Australians, and is available online or as a smartphone App.

In recent years, Mindfulness Meditation has surged in popularity for use in the treatment of stress, resilience, anxiety, depression and other physical and mental illnesses. Highly regarded institutions such as UCLA, Harvard, Oxford, Monash and Melbourne Universities have developed clinical studies into the positive impacts of Mindfulness Meditation.

Smiling Mind’s mission is to provide accessible, life-long tools based in mindfulness meditation. Creating happier, healthier and more compassionate young people.”

This is not only for very young people.  It has progressed to include a corporate program, but of course this is not free.

3.  New Academic Peer Tutorial Program

Expressions of Interest (EOIs) are being sought from suitably qualified, willing and able Monash Law students to become Academic Peer Tutors to teach the following:

Contract A
Contract B
Criminal law and procedure A
Criminal law B
Torts A
Torts B
Property law A
Property law B
Administrative law
Constitutional law
Equity
Trusts
Civil Procedure
Evidence
Lawyers, ethics and society

Tutor requirements are:

  • Minimum 60 WAM across the board
  • Minimum 70 in the subject(s) you wish to tutor
  • Completed subjects within past 2 years
  • Minimum 48 credit points of study completed
  • Available for 2 hours per week per subject
  • Attend mandatory training

Students will be remunerated for their time.
Please submit your EOI with a CV to lloyd.england@monash.edu and a cover letter outlining what subjects you wish to tutor, why you wish to be a Monash Law APT and what value you feel you can bring to a tutorial you run.

1. Australian Government – Rio Tinto NTRB Scholarships

There is an upcoming opportunity for students to apply for an Australian Government – Rio Tinto NTRB Scholarship for a Master of Laws (LLM) in Mineral Law and Policy in Scotland.

Two scholarships are again being offered by Rio Tinto, the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C) and the University of Dundee to lawyers who are currently working or interested in working in the NTRB system.  The timing of the scholarships will correspond to the European academic year, commencing in September 2014.

On-line applications will be open from Monday 17th February through to Friday 14th March, 2014.

4. NSW Law Reform Commission Winter Internships

The NSW Law Reform Commission operates a winter internship program for law students in their final year of study, or entering their final year of study in 2015.

While this opportunity is unpaid, it does provide access to a range of professional development opportunities, including working with our Commissioners.

5. Volunteering at Monash-Oakleigh Legal Service

Are you a first to third year Law student or JD student in your first six trimesters of your degree and looking for the opportunity to gain some invaluable practical legal experience?

Applications for the Wednesday Night Advice Only Session at Monash Oakleigh Legal Service will open 8am Monday 3 March 2014 and close 5pm Sunday 9 March 2014, please note that late applications will not be accepted.

You are applying to be part of the Wednesday night volunteer team, which provides advice to clients experiencing a wide range of legal problems.

Students are rostered to volunteer on Wednesday nights on a fortnightly basis from 6:00pm until approximately 8:30pm. Commencement date is in April 2014.

In each session you will:

Interview clients along with another law student
Develop practical legal skills as well as research skills
Have the opportunity to learn and work under the supervision of qualified lawyers and barristers.

1. 5th University Scholars Leadership Symposium 2014 in Phnom Penh – Cambodia

Humanitarian Affairs, UK in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, Cambodia, invites Promising Students of Leading Universities to the 5th University Scholars Leadership Symposium to be held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on Friday 1 August to Friday 7 August, 2014.

The theme for this year’s Symposium is; “Dream It. Plan It. Do It”. The  “Leadership in Social Change Symposium” is specially designed to provide the next generation of leaders with an understanding of key humanitarian issues; to equip them with essential life skills; to inspire them through motivational talks, to involve them in sustainable activities and to allow them to learn through experiential service programs.

3. Migration Institute of Australia Course Offering

The Migration Institute of Australia (MIA) will be running a comprehensive course available for lawyers and law students interested in practicing immigration law. As Australia’s Migration Program is a complex web of ever-changing legislation, policy and eligibility criteria, the Migration Institute of Australia and the Australian Centre for Migration Education & Research are bringing together Accredited Specialists and experienced immigration lawyers to deliver a comprehensive series of interactive workshops designed for legal practitioners and final year law students seeking to practice in the field.

This course also has Continuing Legal Education (CLE) points available.

1. JD Trimester 1 Examination Timetable

JD Trimester 1 examination timetable is now available on the Faculty website here

2. Trimester 1 2014 JD Unit Discontinuation Dates

The last day to discontinue a Trimester 1 2014 JD core units (except new intake) without penalty is Monday 3 February, 2014.

The last day to discontinue LAW7470 and LAW7264 without penalty (January new intake students) is Monday 17 February, 2014.

Please note that elective units have different discontinuation dates.
