1. Nudging for Better Health Conference

There is growing enthusiasm in government policy circles for promoting strategies designed to encourage and enable individuals to lead healthier lives. Such strategies draw on behavioural research showing individuals do not always act rationally and are susceptible to a range of influences which impact on the decisions they make. The research suggests that people can be nudged towards making decisions which are better for their health but in such a way that it does not unduly restrict their liberty or freedom to act.

1. English Language Skills for International students

A new Library guide has been developed called: Vacation English – a guide for international students who wish to maintain or improve their English language skills during the university vacation breaks.

2. Monash University Law Review Editorial Committee Applications Now Open

The Monash University Law Review is the flagship academic journal of Monash Law School, managed by student editors and supervised by faculty advisors. It is highly regarded by law schools, academics and members of the legal profession. Typically, Editorial Committee members complete 3-4 partial edits of an article during the course of a year. The time commitment per article is approximately 5-10 hours.

To apply to join the committee please send a copy of your cover letter, CV and latest unofficial academic transcript (including semester 2 results for LLB students, and trimester 3 results for JD students) to law.review@monash.edu with the subject line ‘2014 Committee Application’.

Applications will close Friday 31 January 2014 at 5pm.

Students will be notified if they have progressed to the next stage of the application process – an editing exercise – shortly following close of applications.

4. Summer Semester B LLB Units and T1-57 LLM Units

Please note that if you are enrolled in any Summer Semester B LLB or T1 -57 LLM Units, your Units’ SETU online survey will open on Friday, 17 January and close on Friday, 7 February. Can you please ensure that you do complete the online SETU survey as we do value your opinions on your Units and take your feedback on board. Your Teacher may even give you 10 mins class time to do the SETU survey online.

The internship program aims to give law students an understanding of the work to improve legal literacy and access to legal services in Victoria. 1. Faculty of Law Student Service Office Closure

Faculty of Law Student Services Office will be closed on Wednesday 18th December until 11.30am.

2. Final Student Gazette for 2013

This is the final gazette for 2013. The next student gazette will be sent Monday 20th January 2014.

3. Summer Semester Evaluations starting Dec 9th

Please note the  online SETU Unit and Teaching evaluations for the Summer Semester Units are starting

•SSA -02 Units – start on 9 Dec and end on 30 Dec – this affects LLM and LLB  Units

•SSB -01 Units – start on 17 Jan and end on 7 Feb –  this affects LLB Units

•T1-57 Units –  start on 17 Jan and end on 7 Feb  – this affects LLM Units.

If you are still having classes for your Summer Semester Unit then your Teacher should allow you some time in class to complete this online survey for your Unit. You might like to ask your Teacher to explain to you how they have used the feedback from the last Unit evaluation survey to improve the Unit which you are currently doing.

If you have completed your Summer Unit classes already then we would still encourage you to please complete your online SETU surveys. Your Teacher may even send you an email or post a message to the Unit Discussion forum reminding you of the importance of completing the  SETU surveys online and giving feedback about the Unit. We really do appreciate the feedback you provide about our Units and the Teachers do use it to help continually improve their Units.

1. Free Legal Research Sessions

Thomson Reuters is running a Summer School program in early 2014, covering primary and secondary research on Westlaw AU and Westlaw International. The sessions are held at the Thomson Reuters office in Bourke Street.

1. Allocate+ for Trimester 1 2014 (Current students)

Allocate+ for Trimester 1 2014 JD core units will be opened at 12pm on 9 December 2013. Due to the set size of each class, once a stream is full there are no more places available.

Students are required to complete the self-allocation by 31 December 2013. Students who require changing stream must apply in writing to the Faculty by submitting the Changing seminar streams or tutorial group application form along with the supporting documentation by Friday 3 January 2014. The form can be downloaded from Faculty website.

The prize shall be awarded to a LLB/JD 2013 graduate and who is judged to have demonstrated a commitment to community service throughout their law studies as well as excellence in scholarship.

2. Free Italian Lessons

Italian language (beginner) classes – sponsored by Monash Abroad

Are you planning on going to Prato, Italy or would you like to learn Italian? Monash Abroad will be sponsoring 30 students for SLAP Italian Second Language Program in summer 2014.

When: Summer, 2014. From 13th January to 21st February 2014
Class schedule: 4 hours of class per week. 2 x 2 hours per week
Cost: Free (Usual cost of $120 fully subsidized by Monash Abroad!) A refundable deposit of $50 is required.

Class Size: Approx 30 students
