Position purpose:

Monash aims to facilitate a positive and successful transition for all commencing students to their discipline(s) of study, campus, and learning environments through engagement processes which provide academic, social, administrative and geographic familiarisation with Monash and embrace the diversity of their previous experiences.

As part of the suite of transition programs, Monash is introducing an early engagement program for students who are “First in Family” to attend university. The aim of the program is to provide a supportive service throughout the students first year using multiple communication channels including phone contact at key times from Student Success Advisers.

Student Success Advisers are responsible for providing general advice in relation to common transition issues experienced by students, making referrals to appropriate support services, and completing necessary record-keeping for each contact session.

This position reports to the Coordinator of Transition and Retention, Health and Wellbeing.

1. Faculty Managed Internship Opportunity

ZICOlaw are Malaysia’s largest law firm with offices located in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand.  Their expertise and commitment to goals has led them to be a multiple recipient of the “Malaysian Law Firm of the Year” award from the International Financial Law Review.

An internship is being offered, for four weeks during the period June/July. Applications for  have been extended and will close Friday 6 April 2012.

Support role for senior commercial barrister

You will be responsible for: production and management of documents; dictaphone typing; office management; legal research; and administrative duties.

The successful candidate will be able to work well under pressure and meet deadlines with a calm and confident approach.

Essential skills/experience:

  • Advanced computer skills (including Microsoft Office);
  • Typing speed of 90+ WPM (95% accuracy);
  • Strong attention to detail;
  • Demonstrated communication and organisational skills; and
  • Strong legal research skills.

Desirable skills/experience:

  • Previous experience working in a legal environment;
  • Ability to use database software, in particular, FileMaker Pro; and

1. Allen & Overy, Hong Kong – 2012 Vacation Placement Scheme – DEADLINE EXTENDED

Applications are now open until Tuesday 6 March, 2012

Allen & Overy are inviting Monash law students to apply for a four-week summer vacation placement for June or July 2012.

They are keen to receive applications from penultimate or final year LLB students who are interested in joining our Summer Placement Scheme in Hong Kong in 2012, with a view to applying for a trainee solicitor position in Hong Kong in September 2014.

The interview takes the form of a preparation-free case study. They will assess your ability to work as part of a team, your leadership and presentation skills and entrepreneurial spirit and energy. Excellent academic results are essential and Chinese language skills are highly advantageous.

Their placements include experience in two seats in different departments, a full training programme, a series of challenging assessments, individual coaching from your trainer and a calendar packed with social and pro bono activities. They will also pay PCLL course fees and subsidise living expenses if you accept a training contract with them.

Application:

To ensure the entry requirements for the PCLL courses can be satisfied (particularly the overseas law students), all interested students must visit the websites of:

  • The Law Society of Hong Kong
  • City University of Hong Kong
  • The University of Hong Kong and
  • The Chinese University of Hong Kong

There are very strict conversion exemptions and examinations that you need to comply with before you can study the PCLL in Hong Kong.

4. Volunteering at Monash Oakleigh Legal Service (MOLS)

Are you a first to third year law student or a JD student in your first three trimesters of your degree, looking for the opportunity to gain some invaluable practical legal experience? Applications for the waiting list are now open for the “Wednesday Night Advice Only” volunteer group at MOLS, which is located next to Monash Clayton Campus at 60 Beddoe Avenue.

What is it all about?
You are applying to be on the waiting list to be part of the Wednesday night team which provides advice to clients experiencing a wide range of legal problems.
Students are rostered to volunteer on Wednesday nights on a fortnightly basis from 6:15pm until approximately 8:30pm

In each session…you will:

  • interview clients along with another law student;
  • develop practical legal skills as well as research skills; and
  • have the opportunity to learn and work under the supervision of a qualified lawyer and barristers.

Successful applicants will be placed on the waiting list and notified when opportunities arise.

4. Legal Internships

The NSW Law Reform Commission invites:

  • law students in their final year;
  • law students entering their final year in 2013; and
  • recent law graduates

to apply for legal internships during the winter university vacation, 2012.

Interns work as volunteers on a full-time basis. The Commission does not provide any remuneration or financial assistance to interns.

An internship at the Law Reform Commission provides an opportunity to work closely with the Commissioners and law reform staff and contribute directly to the development of proposals for law reform. Depending on the reference this could include undertaking research, contributing to drafting consultation documents, assisting with consultation processes, or helping draft reports. The Commission credits the contribution of interns in its published papers.

The Commission seeks to provide a stimulating environment and a varied experience for interns.

Interns should be available to work 6-8 weeks equivalent full-time (this must be comprised of at least 4 weeks full-time work, the remainder can be completed on a part-time or full-time basis) commencing in June or July 2012. Applicants are invited to indicate their availability when applying.

5. Tipstaff to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of New South Wales

Applications are invited for the position of Tipstaff to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, the Honourable T F Bathurst.

The appointment will commence in late January 2013. Applicants are expected to continue on the staff of the Chief Justice for the year 2014 in the position of Research Director. The primary role of Tipstaff is assisting the Chief Justice with legal research. The Tipstaff also performs a range of court-related duties in Chambers, as well as spending a substantial amount of time in court. In the second year of appointment the tasks to be performed are almost entirely research, with less frequent attendance in court.

2. Hong Kong Law Fair

International law firms from Hong Kong will visit Melbourne in March for the Hong Kong Law Fair, to speak with university students about their employment opportunities. This event is open to all Monash students interested in an international legal career in Hong Kong. Around 20 firms will attend including Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom and many more.

2. Tipstaff Position Available

Applications are invited for the position of Tipstaff to Justice Allsop, President of the NSW Court of Appeal.

The appointment will commence in late January 2013, for one year. Applicants should be prepared to continue on the staff of the President for the year of 2014 as Researcher.  The primary role of Tipstaff is assisting the President with court related duties and research. This includes spending a substantial amount of time in court.
