1. Library Learning Skills Seminars

Skills Sessions: Weeks 5 and 6: Case law.

This seminar is a combined learning skills and research session, focusing on how to search for a case online and how to prepare a case note.

Sessions will be held in the Law Library’s level 1 computer lab on:

  • Monday 28 March 12 -1pm
  • Tuesday 29 March 1 – 2 pm
  • Thursday 31 March 1 – 2 pm.

On Monday 28 March there will be another session in L5, and you’ll need to bring or share a wireless-enabled laptop.

There will be two sessions the following week on:

  • Tuesday 5 April 1 – 2 in L2
  • Thursday 7 April in L5.

Note: Please bring or share a wireless-enabled laptop for these lecture room sessions.

Skills Sessions: Week 6. Assignments – Where the marks come from.

Understanding the difference between an adequate answer and an evaluative one.  what styles to use, and what structures work best for different assignments.  Covers reports, problem-solving and general assignments.

  • Monday 4 April 12 – 1pm in the Law Library Meeting Room on level 3
  • Repeated in L5 on Monday 4 April 1 – 2 pm in L5.

1. LAW1101 Court Report Classes in Week 4

A reminder that the Law Library is running LAW1101 Court Report classes in Week 4. This one hour class is designed to assist you to complete your Court Report assignment.  The classes are practical hands-on sessions held in the Law Library’s Level 1 computer lab. 2. Library Learning Skill Seminars

Seminar 4: Reading for Critical Analysis

Following the initial context reading, then analyse and evaluate the reading materials. This gives you the best results, in both exams and assignments.
This session is held in the Law library 3rd floor meeting room (limited capacity) Monday 21 March,
from 12 – 1 pm, then repeated from 1 – 2 pm in L5.

Seminar 5: Case Law – Finding Cases and Writing a Case Note.

This is a combined research and wriitng session, focusing on how to search for cases online and how to prepare a case note.  This session will be presented 6 times in weeks 5 and 6.  Please check for venues and times on the bookings link.

1. Library Learning Skills Seminar 3: Managing the Set Readings, Lectures, Note-taking and Tutorials.

Students often feel overwhelmed by the amount and density of the readings, and how to link these to the lectures and tutorials.   The key is note-taking techniques that tie these together and lead to exam summaries.

This session is held in the Law library 3rd floor meeting room (limited capacity) from 12 – 1 pm, then repeated from 1 – 2 pm in L5.

1. Easier Access to Reserve and Holds

The Law Library now has an open Reserve collection. You can browse the collection and use the books in the Reserve area without borrowing, or collect a book and borrow via self loans or the Loans desk. Holds have also moved to open access and are located at the beginning of the Commonwealth Legislation collection on Level 1. Collect your hold and take it to self loans or the Loans desk to borrow.

2. Learning Skills Drop-ins

Trish Hughes, Law Learning Skills Adviser, will be located at the Research and Learning desk on Level 1 of the Law Library during her drop-in times throughout semester – Wednesdays and Fridays 12 – 2pm.

3. Meeting Rooms for Group Study

Meeting rooms on Level 4 are now open to students during all Library opening times. Bookings to use these rooms for group work for 2 hours can still be made at the Loans desk, and these take preference over students without a booking. Keys are no longer required. Please remember that Level 4 is a quiet zone.

4. Tours and Case Finding Exercise

A reminder to new students that the Law Library is running tours throughout Week 1 at 10am, 2pm and 4pm each day. These include instruction and help in finding cases for Task 2 of the ILR Court report assignment. Just meet in the Law Library foyer.

5. Welcome to the Library

Come and find out how to manage the set readings, lectures and tutorials.  Tips on note-taking techniques for these that will then lead into exam summaries.  Monday, 7 March, 12 – 1 in the Library 3rd floor meeting room, repeated 1 – 2 pm in L5.

1. Case Law Seminar

This class is being offered in weeks 5 and 6 outside lecture times and will focus on how to search for cases online and how to prepare a case note.  Bring a laptop connected to the Monash wireless network, if you have one, as we will be working through the exercises in groups.  Check venue when booking through the Library class booking system

2. Court Report Classes

This class is designed to assist you to complete your Court Report assignment.  Classes have been scheduled in weeks 3 and 4, outside lecture times.  Book through the Library class booking system

3. First Year Students

4. Navigating the Law Library

Tours of the Law Library will be offered in O week and week 1.  A guided tour will get you off to a flying start and help you to identify and locate essential resources.  This 45 minute session includes locating cases as required in the LAW1101 Introduction to Legal Reasoning (ILR) Finding Cases Exercise.  No bookings required.
