1. 2013 Re-enrolment

Re-enrolment for 2013 commences on 8 October and ends on 19 November 2012. Students may re-enrol via WES for the 2013 academic year during the re-enrolment period. If you have not re-enrolled by 19 November 2012 you may do so between the 20 November to 14 December 2012 but a $289 late fee will be applied. Please see the Re-enrolment webpage for further information.

2. Charlie Perkins Scholarship

The Charlie Perkins Scholarships are now accepting applications for 2013.

Each year the Charlie Perkins Scholarship Trust offers two Scholarships for Indigenous postgraduates to study either Oxford or Cambridge universities for up to three years.

To be considered for the Scholarship, applicants must have applied for a course at Oxford and/or Cambridge. Applicants must also submit:

  • a cover letter
  • a curriculum vitae
  • an official transcript of university results
  • confirmation of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent
  • details for two academic referees (email and telephone numbers)

Before contacting the Trust, please visit the Perkins Trust website for more detail about the required documents.

Please note that applications will close on Friday 2 November 2012. The Charlie Perkins Scholarships will only be awarded to students who are accepted to study at either Oxford or Cambridge. In most instances, this will require a First Class Honours degree or a very strong Second Class Honours degree.

3. FAQ for JD Students Taking Elective Units

The Faculty of Law (Postgraduate) has launched the FAQs for JD students taking elective units webpage. The FAQs provide useful information to assist you in preparing for your electives. We encourage all Postgraduate students to visit the FAQs to gain a better understanding of what to expect in your elective units.

4. Migration to Moodle

The Faculty of Law (Postgraduate) has moved to Moodle for units commencing in Term 3 2012. Please note that Blackboard will not be used for these units and functionalities previously used in Blackboard will be used via Moodle. Moodle can be accessed through your my.monash portal (click on Moodle2 in the left hand side panel) and support and training can be found here.

6. Semester 2 SETU Surveys

Can you please complete the Semester 2 SETU survey for your Unit? You can access this survey for your S2 Units via your my.monash portal. Please note that the SETU surveys close off on the following dates:

  • 12 Sept – some LLM and most UG units
  • 7 Sept – Winter Units – LAW4160
  • Full Year Units – the SETU surveys will open on 21 Sept and close on 26 Oct
  • T3-58 Units – the SETU surveys will open on 1 Oct and close on 15 Oct
  • T4-57 Units – the SETU surveys will open on 25 Oct and close on 1 Nov.

If you don’t know which Teaching period your Unit is in then you can check up on the relevant timetable.

We really appreciate you completing these online SETU surveys each Semester as your ratings and feedback help our teachers to continually improve the quality of our Units.

1. Special Consideration (Deferred Exam)

Some important information for the coming examination period; Students who need to apply for special consideration (deferred exam), please make sure that

  • you have read the eligibility criteria carefully – see page 1 of the application form
  • you submit the completed application with valid supporting documentation no later than two University working days after your last exam
  • if you apply for special consideration due to serious illness, the medical certificate needs to verify that you are unfit to sit the exam

Note: Students who complete the final examination will not be eligible for special consideration. A mark adjustment will not be made under any circumstances.

The University special consideration policy as well as the application form can be located here. The deferred examination period for Trimester 2 is August 23rd and 24th, 2012. It is University policy that no results can be released to students before the official publication date under any circumstances and students are advised to take this into consideration when making plans for Semester 2.

1. Online Survey Winner

In the recent Postgraduate Consultative Meeting, the Faculty Manager, Janet White, drew out the winner of the Village Gold Class double pass – Ms Amanda Davis-Geddes, who is doing her LLM with us.

We thank Amanda and all the other participants who took the time to give their views in our online survey. We are now involved in some detailed analysis of the results and the comments, and will provide a formal response to the student body very soon.

1. Allocate+ for Trimester 3 2012 Units

JD Trimester 3 2012 units will be open on Allocate+ for self-allocation at 12pm on 23 July 2012 (except for LAW7470* & LAW7264*).

Students are required to complete the self-allocation online by 5pm on 13 August 2012. Due to the set size of each class, once a stream is full there are no more places available unless some student comes out. Students who fail to complete the self-allocation will be auto-allocated into any available stream by Friday 17 August 2012. Allocate+ will then open again for students to make adjustments between 20-24 August 2012.

Students who require to change stream after the adjustment period, must apply in writing to the Faculty by submitting the Changing streams application form, along with the supporting document by Friday 31 August 2012. Late applications or incomplete applications will not be accepted.

*Please note that Allocate+ will be open for LAW7470 & LAW7264 on Monday 13 August 2012, students are required to complete the self-allocation by Friday 24 August.

5. Postgraduate Student Services

Minor work on some Meeting Rooms on Level 2 MULC . Students intending to use Meeting Rooms 2, 3 or 4 on Friday 27th July should be aware that there will be some glazing work carried out that may disrupt use.

2. Current Issues in Electronic Commerce Law

The aim of this unit is to identify important legal issues that arise in facilitation and regulation of electronic commercial transactions, most notably private commercial law issues related to contracts and payment systems and their impact upon the daily life of practitioners.

1. 2013 UNSW Vice-Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Research Fellowships

The University of New South Wales has a vibrant research culture and a strong research record: both Law and Criminology received ERA ratings of 4, indicating world-class research. There are policies to actively support and encourage research, and to attract international visitors, postgraduate students and post-doctoral fellows.

Applications for the award of up to 12 Vice-Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Research Fellowships will open on 18 June and close on 23 August 2012. The application process is aimed at selecting a shortlist of about 40 high quality applications which will be considered for the Fellowships.

Full details on eligibility, application process, and an information pack are available here. Successful fellowships will be announced in November to coincide with the announcement of new ARC and NHMRC Fellows.

3. JD Students

If you haven’t finalised your trimester 3 enrolment, please log onto WES and confirm your T3 enrolment online no later than Friday 6 July.

This will help the Faculty to finalise the planning for T3, and enable us to open Allocate+ on 23 July 2012.

Students who have (or will have) 72 credit points by the end of Trimester 2 2012, can enrol in electives. Elective units timetable can be accessed online.

4. New Semi-Intensive Elective Unit LAW7485

For All Postgraduate Students, the new semi-intensive elective unit ‘LAW7485 Managing High Conflict Personalities’ is now on offer for September/October. For more information please see here.
