2. The Death Penalty in Asia: In the academy, in the court, in the street

Please join us at this event for an analysis of the current state of the death penalty in Asia, guided by experts from the field.

Over 20 countries globally continue to execute. Many of these countries are located in the Asian region (including China, Japan, Singapore, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Vietnam). The death penalty typically harms the very poor, and minority groups, including sexual minorities, foreigners and the intellectually impaired. Whilst globally the trend towards abolition over the past 70 years is strong, there is much work to be done in the Asian region.

The evening will feature:

  • Dr. Mai Sato, Fellow, ANU College of Asia and the Pacific
  • Zainab Mahboob, Head of Legal at Justice Project Pakistan
  • Julian McMahon AC SC, President of Capital Punishment Justice Project
