‘Women Barristers in Victoria – Then and Now’ Exhibition

The ‘Women Barristers in Victoria – Then and Now’ exhibition will be on the first floor of the Law Library, near the lab, from Monday 7 March – Monday 14 March, 2011. This exhibition tracks the key developments in the history of women barristers, their challenges, significant achievements and contributions to the legal profession.

1. Applications Now Open for Law School Ambassador Program 2011 & 2012

2011 & 2012 Ambassador Program applications open 9.00am Monday February 28 and close C.O.B. Friday 11 March, 2011. Applications are open to all Undergraduate and JD students. The Program has grown in stature, reputation and developed over the past 4 years with Ambassadors now running projects such as Staff Student Debates, Law Beyond Practice Evenings, Breakfast with Barristers, and Open Day Presentations to name a few. Students gain invaluable skills to assist in their leadership potential and future employability. Please check your eligibility (4 law Units completed), that you can commit to the program dates and find more information at http://www.law.monash.edu.au/current-students/ambassadors/index.html complete the application form and email the form to Lloyd.England@monash.edu. Selection will be based on a combination of your application and interviews in Week 3 by Senior Ambassadors. 4. Legal (r)Evolution Conference

The Progressive Law Network is holding its inaugural conference focusing on four themes for social justice and law reform: Asylum Seekers, Gender, Environment and Indigenous Law.

Speakers include; Julian Burnside AO QC, Dr Susan Kneebone, Brian Walters SC, Professor Caroline de Costa, Mr Simon Molesworth AM QC, Professor Ian Lowe AO, Senator Elect Larissa Waters, Dr Bronwyn Naylor, Dr Paula Gerber, Dr Stephen Gray and more.

5. Scholarship – The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons

The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons is again offering the Foundation for Surgery Louis Waller Medico-Legal Scholarship in 2012.

This scholarship is open to law graduates undertaking or intending to undertake doctoral research on the topic of medico-legal risks and related law.

1. Library Learning Skills Seminar 3: Managing the Set Readings, Lectures, Note-taking and Tutorials.

Students often feel overwhelmed by the amount and density of the readings, and how to link these to the lectures and tutorials.   The key is note-taking techniques that tie these together and lead to exam summaries.

This session is held in the Law library 3rd floor meeting room (limited capacity) from 12 – 1 pm, then repeated from 1 – 2 pm in L5.

1. Fees – Change for Summer / Winter Law Units

As of winter 2011, student should note that units offered by the Faculty of Law during the winter or summer teaching periods will be charged as per a student’s current fee status, ie students enrolled in a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) may undertake summer and winter semester units on a CSP basis and will pay the relevant Student Contribution Amount (SCA) per unit.

NB The decision to offer units at CSP rates is an individual faculty’s decision. Students must refer to each individual unit on any other faculty’s summer/winter web sites to ascertain if the unit is being offered on a CSP or full -fee basis for CSP students.

Law Library Notices

1. Easier Access to Reserve and Holds

The Law Library now has an open Reserve collection. You can browse the collection and use the books in the Reserve area without borrowing, or collect a book and borrow via self loans or the Loans desk. Holds have also moved to open access and are located at the beginning of the Commonwealth Legislation collection on Level 1. Collect your hold and take it to self loans or the Loans desk to borrow.

2. Learning Skills Drop-ins

Trish Hughes, Law Learning Skills Adviser, will be located at the Research and Learning desk on Level 1 of the Law Library during her drop-in times throughout semester – Wednesdays and Fridays 12 – 2pm.

3. Meeting Rooms for Group Study

Meeting rooms on Level 4 are now open to students during all Library opening times. Bookings to use these rooms for group work for 2 hours can still be made at the Loans desk, and these take preference over students without a booking. Keys are no longer required. Please remember that Level 4 is a quiet zone.

4. Tours and Case Finding Exercise

A reminder to new students that the Law Library is running tours throughout Week 1 at 10am, 2pm and 4pm each day. These include instruction and help in finding cases for Task 2 of the ILR Court report assignment. Just meet in the Law Library foyer.

5. Welcome to the Library

Come and find out how to manage the set readings, lectures and tutorials.  Tips on note-taking techniques for these that will then lead into exam summaries.  Monday, 7 March, 12 – 1 in the Library 3rd floor meeting room, repeated 1 – 2 pm in L5.
